Jism 2 fails to beat Jannat 2 collection record at Box Office

On her Twitter page, director Pooja Bhatt had predicted earlier that her latest directorial venture Jism 2 will have bigger collections than Murder 2 and Jannat 2. As expected, her A-rated romance thriller has done a wonderful collection at the Box Office in India and smashed the first day collection record of Mahesh Bhatt's 2011 release Murder 2, but it has failed to break the opening day record of Bhatt's 2012 release Jannat 2.

Mahesh Bhatt's movie Murder 2, which was released on 8 July, 2011, had registered a very good response with its occupancy ranging between 70% to 75% on the first day of its release. Emraan Hashmi, Jacqueline Fernandez starrer film had collected Rs. 7.1 crore nett at the domestic Box Office on its opening day.

Jannat 2, which was released on May 4, 2012, had also opened to a very good response at the domestic Box Office with its occupancy ranging between 70% and 80% at the multiplexes and 90% and 100% at the single screens. Emraan Hashmi and Esha Gupta starrer film had grossed Rs 8.52 crore nett on the first day of its release.

Whereas Mahesh Bhatt's latest release Jism 2, which collected Rs 1.05 crore from its paid previews on Thursday, registered 55% to 70% occupancy across the country on the first day of its release. The Sunny Leone and Randeep Hooda starrer movie has a decent opening with its collection crossing Rs 7.5 crore nett on the first day.

However, the common features among three movies are that they are sequels to Mahesh Bhatt productions. They are all erotic thrillers and bagged average reviews from film critics. Moreover, the response for all of them was good on the first day, but their business has gone down on the second day. Now, it should be seen whether Jism 2 would break the first weekend collection record of Murder 2 (Rs. 22.7 crore) and Jannat 2 (Rs 24.03 crore).

Murder 2 Actress Jacqueline to portray negative role

Murder 2 girl Jacqueline seems to be in love with sequels. That's probably why after Murder 2 and Housefull 2, she is keen on taking up Krissh 2. The actor is likely to replace Chitrangada Singh as a female mutant in Rakesh Roshan's Krissh sequel.

A source informed Mumbai Mirror, “The meeting with Jacqueline stretched for over three hours. They discussed the script and the actress was quite keen. By the end, both Hrithik and Rakesh seemed to be quite positive about her.”

Rakesh Roshan confirms that Chitrangada indeed has stepped out of the film. He told the tabloid, “I was to start my film in October and took dates accordingly. Now, the film is going on floors in December and Chitrangda is having some problems with her dates then. She has already committed her dates to some other project in December and cannot delay it. So I am looking for some actor who can give the dates according to my schedule.”

But rumour mills suggest something else. Reportedly, Chirangada opted out because her role was smaller than expected. The actor thought the role was that of a main female villain, but it actually turned out to be a cameo.

Murder 2 success party

The success party for Murder 2 might have got postponed because of the Mumbai blasts last week, but when it did happen, the actors made sure they enjoyed themselves to the hilt.

While Soni Razdan gave hubby Mahesh Bhatt company, Smilie Suri was there for brother Mohit Suri. A huge chocolate cake was brought out for the cast and crew, which Emraan Hashmi and Mohit decided to 'murder', quite literally!

Mukesh Bhatt, Prashant Narayanan, Manav Gohil and Shweta Kawaatra and Vikram Bhatt were some of the others who dropped in to celebrate.

Adult films are raking in moolah in Bollywood

"Delhi Belly" has shocked quite a few with its toilet and sex scenes and generous use of expletives, but the A-certified film got a bumper response. With "Haunted" and "Murder 2" also raking in the moolah, these movies have shown how to make money despite having a restricted audience.

"The reason we are seeing A-movies becoming hits is because people are experimenting a lot with the subject. Gone are the days of happy family with Ram Rajya-type subjects. Just to get out of the family drama zone, Bollywood is experimenting with subjects, language and characters," director Rahul Dholakia told.

Dholakia, known for making movies like "Parzania" (2005) and "Lamhaa: The Untold Story of Kashmir" (2010), which were released with A-certificates, is penning down a courtroom drama, "Kanoon", which has a close reference to the 2007 Nandigram incident in West Bengal.

He believes the audience was always ready to accept strong and bold concepts, but producers and directors shied away.

"We always watched such things, but it's just that we never really told such stories through our cinema. There were films by Mahesh Bhatt which had strong and bold concepts like 'Saaransh' (1984) and the movie was well received by the audience.

" 'Nirmaan' (1974), directed by Ravi Tandon, was another example of strong and real subjects. Though the movie received an average business, the plot is revisited now," he added.

In the past few years, things have changed and filmmakers have become bold storytellers and A-movies are setting cash registers ringing.

"Delhi Belly", an adult comedy produced by Aamir Khan, has broken the dry spell at the box office by earning Rs.15.65 crore on its first two days and Mohit Suri's crime thriller "Murder 2" earned Rs.34.9 crore net in the first week.

Earlier this year Raj Kumar Gupta's "No One Killed Jessica", which makes heavy use of abuses, was given an A-certificate, but it created a box-office record.

Anurag Kashyap's "Shaitan", about the dark side of the life of Mumbai youngsters, and Ekta Kapoor's horror flick "Ragini MMS" received critical acclaim and did decent business at the box office.

Gupta said the times have changed and so have viewer perspectives.

"Bollywood films that include reality, violence and the dark side of life have caused a stir. The film industry is also trying hard to shed its traditionally conservative image and develop a new Bollywood which is full of experimentation," said Gupta.

Film critic Taran Adarsh feels a new Bollywood is coming out and said: "Now the whole concept has changed. I am not denying that masala movies have taken a back seat, but other films are also doing very well. 'Delhi Belly' is a shining example. We have a broader outlook towards everything; so we are automatically experimenting."

Mainstream cinema has moved into the 'adult' territory nowadays with acclaimed actors like Aamir Khan and Naseeruddin Shah, who acted in "Ishqiya", jumping into the A bandwagon without any hitch.

Dholakia feels Sharmila Tagore, the ex-chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), and Vinayak Azad, the regional director of CBFC, played a big role in changing the trend.

"Full credit should be given to two people for this change in Bollywood - one is Sharmila Tagore and the second is Vinayak Azad. They are the ones who made a revolutionary change in cinema in the last five years. I love the way Bollywood movies are made nowadays," he said.

Mohit Suri is heaving a sigh of relief now. Apparently, Mahesh Bhatt had threatened not to make a movie with him if his "Murder 2" didn't do well at the box-office. Now that the film has been hugely successful at the box-office, the director is happy and relieved.

Ask Mohit if he had expected that the film would be such a huge hit and he says, "I believed in the movie. I knew it didn't fall into the regular and typical Bollywood films. So, I went all out and made it. I was not listening to the so-called industry people. And it worked."

As to whether he had expected the movie to garner this kind of returns in comparison to its budget, the director says, "Well, I had expected it to do well and had wished that it would break all records for our company. But, I didn't know that it actually would. I hadn't tasted success like this to ever imagine that "Murder 2" would be so big a hit. Bhatt saab had distributed sweets even before the movie had released. But then, I was nervous.

It was do or die for me. Bhatt saab had, in fact, said they won't make a movie with me again if this film didn't do well. It was scary."

Now that "Murder 3" is in the pipeline, has he thought about the casting? Will Prashant Narayanan, whose serial killer act been highly appreciated there in the next movie in this franchise? "Nothing has been decided as yet. But Emraan will be there for sure," he signs off.

The sequel to "Murder" is nothing like the first part of the frenetic franchise. And Jacqueline Fernandez who has been built up in "Murder 2" as the next Mallika Sherawat is nothing like the overrated Mallika…. Thank God for that! Fernandez exudes an unbridled sunniness even when pouting in the bare minimum. Alas, she doesn't have much to do in "Murder 2" except swathe the dark drama in a spot of sunshine.

God knows this film about the devil-unleashed, surprisingly written by a woman (Shagufta Rafique) needs that little of sunshine. It is a desperately dark film. The characters are wretchedly unhappy. No matter which side of the moral line they are positioned they are standing screaming into the abyss that is suburban life. These people need serious help.

This then, is the world Mahesh Bhatt has bequeathed to us. Take it and bleed it.

Director Mohit Suri who earlier took us on a jolting trip through the world of prostitution, pimps and desperate cops in "Kalyug" takes the same route again. On this occasion the journey is far more ruthless and rigorously implemented to create horror repugnance and hatred for a word that we've created for coming generations.

In the typical Mahesh Bhatt style "Murder 2" doesn't waste time in back-projections and story build-up. He goes straight for the kill.

With trenchant immediacy director Mohit Suri (back in "Kalyug" form after the misfire that was his last film "Crook") tells us the story of a psychopathic killer who kills prostitutes with the pleasure that makes your stomach churn and look anxiously towards the future about your daughter who is just stepping into the big wide world.

Who knows if the man sitting next to her in the movie theatre is a closet-nutcase with a collection of hacksaws in his house, and not to carve up the Christmas turkey.

Prashant Narayanan as the psychopath plays the character at such an even pitch he makes your blood freeze in fear and revulsion. Here's a man who could be that ghoul who butchered all those kids in the Nethra killings and then ate them up without a burp.

The 'hero' in "Murder 2" is a burn-out suspended cop who makes money out of criminals, stays sullen and haunted throughout the film except when he goes for the kiss, and offers his girlfriend a wad of notes after making love. To buy the fridge, he says. Naturally the lady freezes.

Force of habit, we say. Hashmi has done this kind of a role repeatedly. The kissing and vigorous bedroom activities are quickly taken care of in the first 15 minutes. Wouldn't want the lovers of the serial kisser to feel they're being cheated in favour of the serial killer.

The wacked-out killer in "Murder 2" doesn't eat his victims. He just cuts them down to sighs…and groans and shrieks of pain and records their dying voices to get his rockers off….

The plot seems original. The narration is clenched and the characters driven by a desperate urge to assert themselves before death rings their doorbell.

The savagery with which the college-going call girl (Sulagna Panigrahi) is brought to her gruesome death becomes a metaphor for the loss of innocence and the triumph of diabolism that is often garbed in designer labels these days.

"Murder 2" is not a pleasant film to view. The psychopath's killings are done in graphic detail. The storytelling offers no respite from the brutality. Most of the time we are looking at happenings that we would rather not see. But see, we must.

"Murder 2" is a mirror of our amoral venomous times when no relationship is sacred anymore. Mohit Suri remains in command of the murky material and traumatized characters. While most episodes hold together in a riveting rhythm of life's most unsavoury truths, the sequences featuring Prashant Naraynan work better than the rest of the film. He lends the proceedings a credibility that is unsettling.

Bollywood cancels big events following Mumbai blasts

Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani were ready with the first look of " Don 2: The Chase Continues" and Mahesh Bhatt was set to celebrate the success of " Murder 2" Wednesday evening, but the filmmakers cancelled their plans following three bomb blasts in Mumbai, which killed over 20 people.

The launch of the first look of the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer "Don 2" was to be held 7.45 p.m. onwards at Cinemax, Andheri West, while the success party for Mohit Suri's directorial "Murder 2" was scheduled for 9 p.m. at the J.W. Marriot hotel in Juhu.

The first blast took place at Zaveri Bazar at 6.59 p.m, followed by a second blast at Opera House at 7.05 p.m, and the final explosion took place at Dadar West at 7.17 p.m., causing panic and chaos in the city.

The incessant rains added to the dilemma of city dwellers.

However, a few print and electronic journalists had already gathered at Cinemax, Andheri West to catch a glimpse of "Don 2", one of the most awaited movies this year.

Producer Ritesh Sidhwani was there too, but he approached the mediapersons, and said: "Due to the blast, we have decided to call off the event."

No further date for the event has been issued as yet.

The "Murder 2" success party, which was expected to be attended by lead pair Emraan Hashmi and Jacqueline Fernandes, apart from director Mohit Suri, other crew members and celebrities from the film industry, was also cancelled as the news of the blasts flashed everywhere, and a high alert was issued.

In New Delhi, Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai requested officials of the French government to postpone an award ceremony where she was supposed to be honoured with a "Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters".

However, Aishwarya appeared before the media along with her actor-husband Abhishek Bachchan and observed a minute-long silence mourning the death of the people in the blasts.

'Shoot in Goa, get tax relief'

In a bid to promote Goa as a film shooting destination, the state government is working on a tax relief scheme which aims to refund entertainment tax back to filmmakers, an official said Thursday.
"What it (scheme) envisages is that the tax which the filmmakers have to incur on say film shoots in terms of accommodation and travel can be refunded to some extent. All that the filmmaker will have to do is submit bills," said Dilip Borkar, member of Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) formed by the state government for the promotion of films.

Filmmakers can thus recover a part of the taxes, Borkar said. The rebate under the proposed scheme would go well up to 50 percent, he added.

Goa, which hosts the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) annually, has been home to several high budget film shoots in recent times like Vikram Bhatt's " Murder 2", Rohan Sippy's "Dum Maaro Dum" and Rohit Shetty's yet to be released " Singham".

When contacted, ESG chief executive officer Manoj Srivastava said the scheme was currently under consideration of the government.

"Our aim is to help lure filmmakers and investment into the state. Currently it is under the consideration of the Goa government. The scheme is still at the proposal stage and is subject to government approval and it is too early to speak about it," Srivastava said.

Murder 3 will be three times hotter

The unexpectedly high success-ratio of Murder 3 has speedened up the process of working on the franchise. Director Mohit Suri has been told to leave all other ideas and work on the next Murder movie.

Murder 3 will now be made sooner rather than later. The way it’s going Murder 2 will be one of the biggest hits of 2011 and the biggest success so far of the Bhatts’ production house. They now want to do Murder 3 quickly. The writing has already begun.

Jubilant and all geared up for the Murder 2 success party to be held on Friday evening, producer Mukesh Bhatt said, “Yes we’re already looking at Murder 3. We hope to have it out by the Summer of 2012. ”

Shagufta Rafique who wrote Murder 2 has been put on the job of quickly coming up with a crackling script for Murder 3 which will again star Emraan Hashmi. But the USP of the Murder franchise is the eclipsed hottie waiting for a makeover. If Murder presented a made-over Mallika Sherawat and Murder 2 sees a completely revamped Jacqueline Fernandez.

Murder 3 will also see an actress with a made-over image.

Says Mukesh Bhatt, “At the moment I can’t reveal the casting plans. But yes Mohit Suri will again direct the next Murder film. ”

The one thing that the writer has been asked to keep in mind while doing Murder 3 is to keep the plot original. Murder was apparently plagiarized from Unfaithful and now Murder 2 is said to be ripped off from a Korean film.

Mukesh Bhatt baulks at the suggestion of plagiarism. “People said Murder was copied from Unfaithful when it was more like B R Chopra’s Gumrah. As for Murder 2 I haven’t even heard of the Korean film The Chaser. If there are similarities then they’re purely coincidental. ”

Adds Mahesh Bhatt, “Saying Murder 2 is ripped off is an uncharitable remark. It’s like saying Gajini was copied from Memento. A situation can’t be copyrighted. I’d say Murder 2 is closer to our own production Sangharsh. A Hindi film is like a patched quilt. ”

All said and done Murder 3 which is now being written will be absolutely original. About it being made ahead of Raaz 3, Vikram Bhatt who’s to direct Raaz 3 for the Bhatts, says, “As far as I know we’re going on the floors in January 2012.

Raaz 3 will have Emraan Hashmi and Jacqueline Fernandez. It will also star another girl. But the role is still in development. As for Murder 3 it’s a great franchise. But I’m sure Raaz 3 will also have a lot of takers. ”T

Why Jacqueline's not promoting Murder 2?

Jacqueline Fernandez has been the apple of Vishesh Films' eye. The media has been abuzz about how tight they have been. However, today the same Jacqueline Fernandez has landed the production house in a fix.

The actress has flown to London to shoot for Housefull 2, when she should be in Mumbai promoting her next release Murder 2, which is just a fortnight away. The film has already been in the news.

Naturally, the Bhatts are not too pleased about these turn of events. Defending Jacqueline, a source said, "She had no choice. She was required for Housefull 2 in the last week of June and the first week of July and she just couldn't say 'No'. Needless to say that Jacqueline did not want to ruffle feathers with the Nadiadwala camp.

At such a crucial time, the Bhatts, obviously, are not too pleased about Jacqueline's disappearance. "Now she's gone, what can be done? At the most, she might fly down for just a few days before Murder 2 hits the theatres, woh bhi pakka nahin hai." When contacted, Mahesh told Mumbai Mirror, "I was angry with Mukesh and the production team. We have a premium product in Murder 2, which is now a franchise.

The marketing should reach its peak in the last few days, but now Jacqueline has gone away. The film has a very high erotic content and hence it is important that the female lead of your film is there on every platform with you towards the end, during the promotional phase right before the audience sees it."

Mahesh further added, "Mukesh and the production team should have made arrangements to rope her into the publicity campaigns."

Mukesh Bhatt however, had a different take on this. When contacted, he said, "I called Sajid Nadiadwala but got no response. If I was in Sajid's place I would have let her go. They have capitalised on her casting in Murder 2 since she has only now become hot property."

"Hereafter, I will ensure that I have a legal bound contract with every actor that they have to be actively involved in the promotion of the film," he added.

Though the production house could not be angry with Jacqueline, they are at their wits' end regarding the film's promotion. With everyone demanding Jackie's time, there is no doubt that she indeed has become hot property.

The actress will be in London shooting Sajid Khan's next while promotional activities kick start back home. According to sources, M2 doesn't offer much scope to Jacqueline. Also, Sajid has given prior instructions to his crew members to not to give any dates for any other project during Housefull 2.
 
Sajid's film will be shot entirely in London and therefore it will be practically impossible for the actress to be available for the promotions. Sources also say that Sajid has promised his current favourite Jacqueline a perfect launch through H2. Unlike in Housefull, wherein Jacqueline's role was restricted to just one item song, the actress will have a substantial role in the sequel which also stars Asin and Zareen Khan in lead roles.

Bipasha Basu's loss is Jacqueline Fernandez's gain. The Sri Lankan beauty has now replaced the former, who lost out on a plum role in the Bhatts' Raaz 3 due to temper tantrums over an item number in Murder 2.
