This is the accidental controversy of my life: Minissha Lamba

This is the accidental controversy of my life: Minissha LambaMinissha Lamba sounding cheerful, relieved & grateful on the morning after her trauma on Mumbai airport, speaks to Subhash K Jha.

Minissha, what happened?
It was just minor discrepancy in my papers for the jewellery. I’m just so shocked by the monstrous proportions that the incident acquired.

Is it true you were detained the whole night at the airport?
I was detained for sixteen hours. Which, if I may say so, was completely unnecessary in a case like this. However if my papers were not in order because of a minor technicality then the authorities were totally within their rights to detain me. We’ve to go by the book. No complaints about it.

Did you really have undeclared diamonds worth 40 lakh rupees?
Definitely not that much. The value was much much less. I can’t tell you how much because it involves a legality. I had the paperwork to authenticate it.

So why did they detain you at the airport?
A minor glitch. I don’t want to go into who was responsible for it.

Were the airport authorities civil with you?
They were very civil. Very very friendly. They served me the most amazing food and they were constantly cracking jokes to ease my nervousness.

I ended up regaling them with my experiences at Cannes. They regaled me with their experiences with celebrities. We had a very lively sixteen-hour session.

You’re making it sound like a party?!
What can I say? I had the choice of either sitting and crying or trying to make the best of a bizarre situation. Guess what I chose to do? I took a chill-pill. They were very civil civil-servants.

The whole thing was done quietly and with great dignity. I am sure they’ve encountered worse offenders than me. I’m just a little sheep that inadvertently got caught up in a situation.

Did you have a relative accompanying you?
You know I am a very independent girl. I didn’t even want to inform my parents about it when it happened. In any case my phone taken from me. I wasn’t allowed to use it. I didn’t want to cause any worry for my parents. I didn’t know it the incident had already gone out.

Was it harrowing?
Yes, because a molehill was blown up into a mountain. There I was, I had just landed from Cannes, jetlagged and groggy. I just wanted to get home and sleep. Little did I know what was in store for me. Life is full of surprises. Earlier during the trip I lost my baggage at the Nice airport.

Kissne ki yeh ‘Nice’ harkat?
(laughs). I’ve gone through so much during the trip. I told God, if you’ve more in store bring it in now, let’s get it out of the way.

So how did you manage to dress so well at Cannes?
The baggage was lost on my way back. Thank God for that. And I didn’t lose too many valuables.

How was Cannes?
I had gone to attend the premiere of the new Woody Allen film. I couldn’t meet him. But his management told me that they’re looking seriously at Indian cinema. I met a lot of people from the international movie community.

Has the controversy shaken you?
I think I got into the controversy by default. This is the accidental controversy in my life. It’s one of those life-experiences. Even in future I will find myself in unpleasant situations. what I make of them is in my hands entirely.

Looks like Cannes doesn’t suit you?
On the contrary the experience has made me a stronger humanbeing. I think I’ll go every year now.

Aishwarya Cannes 2011

On the second day of the Cannes Film Festival 2011 Aishwarya Rai wore an icy gown in white and blue by Armani. The strapless gown was contemporary in silhouette and Aishwarya completed her look with a bold, big watch which looked more like a cuff, and a clutch in steel tone.

Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor sashayed down the red carpet in Jean Paul Gaultier couture. The lady looked stunningly gorgeous in a dress that seemed tailor-made for her, causing a flutter among the paparazzi.

Mallika Sherawat

This was Mallika Sherawat third appearance at Cannes, and as usual she made many heads turn in her direction. This time it was all thanks to the zany see-through gown that even revealed the outline of her undergarments.

Candice Boucher

Mallika was outdone by Candice Boucher who turned up in a transparent dress as well.

Bollywood documentary takes Cannes by storm

Mumbai May 21-  Bollywood documentary "The Greatest Love Story Ever Told " by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Shekhar Kapoor has taken Cannes by storm. Even before its screening in the French town, the documentary has already been invited to four other international film festivals.

Mehra seems somewhat stupefied by the spell that the documentary has cast on the foreign critics and audiences at Cannes.

"The documentary's journey started on 14 May. After the red carpet walk, we had our first sold-out screening at 8 p.m. Ever since then the curious inquiries about our cinema have not stopped."

A beach screening of the documentary left the entire congregation gasping for breath. Earlier, an indoor screening at Cannes was attended by over 2,000 people.

"It's been an incredible experience," says Mehra from Cannes.

"When we made this film we had only one target in mind. To connect Bollywood cinema with the socio-cultural events of the country was not an easy task. We didn't want to put forward the usual Bollywood formula in a documentary."

Now after several screenings of "The Greatest Love Story Ever Told", Mehra feels the Western perception of Bollywood cinema is changing.

Says the director who was last in Cannes with his film Rang De Basanti ": "Everyone here in Cannes is saying in one voice, 'We didn't know Indian cinema ran so deep'.

"After one screening the press kept asking us questions on Indian cinema for hours. The documentary has introduced to Cannes facets of Hindi cinema that they didn't know existed... to 'Sri 420' and 'Pyaasa', to Shammi Kapoor and the anti-establishment angry young man played by Amitabh Bachchan .

"The perspective offered by the documentary is different from the one that Bollywood cinema has so far given to the West."

Mehra has so far had no respite from screenings of and conversations on the documentary.

"I hope to catch all the movies here at Cannes from Tuesday. On the 19th, my wife Bharathi, who is here with me, and I leave for a two-day holiday near Cannes. Then we're back in Mumbai."

Candice Boucher beats Mallika Sherawat at Cannes

Mallika Sherawat managed to walk the red carpet at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. Fresh out of her pristine white outfit she wore to the White House, the actress donned a black lace dress (a cross between a Halloween costume and a bondage dress) showing off her undies on Saturday night.

However, the eyeballs she planned on grabbing were already focussed on Playboy model Candice Boucher who walked in a transparent gown covering her vitals in lace flowers and leaving little to the imagination.

"Mallika was pretty excited about her red carpet walk. Much like her excitement over meeting the President and getting invited to the White House and meeting Scarlett Johansson and so on and so forth.

Her red carpet entry was also publicised to well (some very efficient Marketing professionals we already are aware of, need to be thanked here). She thought she'd blow everyone's mind with her entry. However, it turned out to be quite the opposite.

Mallika did wear a revealing outfit with her undergarments quite visible but it was Candice Boucher who walked in minutes before her in a see through gown and the photographers went berserk.

Candice was walking the red carpet since her film Azaan was to be showcased. She walked in with director Prashant Chaddha and the lead actor of the film Sachin Joshi. Mallika was obviously fuming but what could one do," informed our source from the event.
Although Mallika remained unavailable for comments, her spokesperson said, "Nothing like this happened."

However Sachin Joshi, the lead actor along with whom Candice entered said, "Candice's outfit did create a stir because it was quite controversial and many eyebrows were raised."

Harassed Minissha Lamba gets relief

First she nearly misses her red-carpet call, next she loses her baggage, and then she forgets to declare jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh

Even as the Indian contingent made the most of the world's biggest film spectacle in the south of France, Cannes first-timer Minissha Lamba tottered from one disaster to another, and what began as a dream red-carpet walk wound up with a detention in the far-from-glamorous Custom's interrogation room at the Mumbai airport.

The actress, who was in Cannes for the premier of Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, almost missed her red carpet moment, had people tripping over her trailing Gauri and Nainika gown and lost her baggage at Nice airport. To add insult to injury, she was detained for over 12 hours at the Mumbai airport for carrying undeclared diamond jewellery.

In her excitement to rub shoulders with the mighties of filmdom, the starlet apparently forgot to carry the all-important letter from the jeweller who had loaned her Rs 50 lakh worth of diamond jewellery to flash on her big day.

What complicated her case was that Minissha had seemingly forgotten to declare the jewellery on her way to France.

Around 8.30 am on Wednesday, Minissha, who arrived by an Emirates flight was intercepted by Assistant Commissioner of Police Sameer Wankhede while she was passing through the Green Channel. After screening and checking of her baggage, the Customs officials found undeclared jewellery.

On questioning, Minissha said that she had carried the valuables even while leaving the country but forgot to declare them. She was carrying diamond studded semi-precious stone and assorted jewellery.

"Minissha was supposed to obtain an export certificate from the Customs department while she was leaving the country. Since she had not followed the procedure, she was detained for not declaring the valuables," a Customs officer said.

According to the officer, Minissha told them that the valuables do belong to her, but were given to her by Anmol Jewellers for the festival.

She also told the officials that she was given the jewellery for the "purpose of promotion" at Cannes.

"A jewellery evaluator was called by the Custom officials to ascertain the exact value of the jewellery.

Lamba appeared calm and co-operated during the questioning and told the officers that it was an inadvertent mistake on her part," said the officer.

However, Customs authorities didn't find any document on her that could support her claims.

A spokesperson from Anmol Jewellers said, "Minissha had carried some of our jewellery, worth around Rs 40 lakh, with her for promotional purposes to Cannes and we had done the necessary paperwork for it. Unfortunately she forgot to carry the document.

We are aware of the situation at Customs and are in constant touch with them to sort out the matter. We have also forwarded a copy of the document to them."

Meanwhile, the customs officers were seriously considering an arrest. "The matter is complicated that's why only after investigation, it will be decided whether to arrest her or not," said Commissioner, Customs, P M Govande.

Thankfully for Minissha, the relevant documents from Anmol arrived just in time to save her from further embarrassment, and at the time of going to press to, the actress was preparing to walk out of the airport.

The actress had been tweeting about her harassment at Nice airport where her baggage went missing, and also gave interviews about how she nearly missed her call for the walking into the star-studded Woody Allen premier because of a miscommunication.
