Federation of Film Societies of India Completes 50 years

Federation of Film Societies of India (FFSI), the umbrella organisation of film societies in the country, is set to celebrate its golden jubilee with a series of programmes planned over the next few months. Special events will be held at Kolkata, Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram and Pune, where veteran film society activists will be honoured.

FFSI started on December 13, 1959 as legendary Satyajit Ray its President and late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as its Vice-President. The federation will hold a three-day event in Kolkata starting December 30, where stalwarts of film society movement will be felicitated.

These events would also discuss issues like challenges before film societies in India in an era of world cinema, proliferation of television channels and popularity of DVDs, FFSI General Secretary Sudhir Nandgaonkar said here on Friday.

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will inaugurate the celebrations and honour renowned critic Chidanand Dasgupta, who founded the FFSI along with Satyajit Ray, Vijaya Mule and Mrinal Sen. A seminar will also be held where new challenges before film societies will be discussed.
