Meet the ‘Murder 2’ hottie | Sulagna Panigrahi, the latest hottie in Bollywood

After the conclusion of Amber-Dhara Sulagna was seen in the serial Do Saheliyaan where she played the character of Maithali. The soap was based on the story of two best friends set in rural Rajasthan. Following the success of Do Saheliyaan, Sulagna went for an image makeover and played a vamp in the hit serial Biddai.

What followed next was a dream come true for Sulagna. She auditioned for a part in
Murder 2 and bagged the role of a college girl who takes to prostitution to support her poor family. Her acting skills have already earned her a lot of compliments.

So, here’s a photo feature that brings to the fore a hot side of Sulagna Panigrahi. After watching these pictures you will surely ask yourselves - Is she the same Sulagna we saw in
Abhar-Dhara and Do Saheliyan? Well, shocking but true, behind that sober Sulagna was a hot chic waiting to get a break in Bollywood.

Jerome turns against Maria, blames her for Grover murder

Challenging his conviction for culpable homicide and the 10-year rigorous imprisonment handed to him for killing TV executive Neeraj Grover, former Navy officer Emile Jerome has turned against his girlfriend, Kannada starlet Maria Susairaj, and blamed her for the 2008 murder which shocked the country.

Seeking the reversal of the trial court’s July 1 order that held him guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, Jerome has said in his appeal in the Bombay High Court, “That motive, if any, was with the Original Accused No 1 for committing the offence and not with the Appellant/Original Accused No 2.” According to the chargesheet, Susairaj is accused No. 1 and Jerome, No. 2.

Susairaj was convicted and handed a three-year jail term for disappearance of evidence as she helped Jerome chop Grover’s body and dispose it in the jungles of Thane district. But since she had already spent more time in jail as an undertrial, she was freed a day after the sentencing.

Priyanka heads home for 29th birthday

New Delhi, July 16 (IANS) After a break in Los Angeles, Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra is heading back home to celebrate her 29th birthday with her family, post the Mumbai blasts.

'Heading home..LA's been amazing...but looking forward to seeing my family... my dad n my brother esp with everything that's happening wanna b home (sic),' Priyanka posted on her Twitter page.

She flew to Los Angeles straight from the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) weekend and awards ceremony in Toronto last month.

Sure you don't want a real job, Kate Middleton?

Kate Middleton and Prince William visit the Mission Serve: Hiring Our Heroes event in Culver City, California
Freshly home from their North American jaunt, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have now retreated home to North Wales.

They want a quieter life and are keen to avoid upsetting Gran (whose Diamond Jubilee is next year). Wills will fly his helicopters and Kate will, er, “spend her time in the detailed task of planning which good causes she wants to become involved with”.

She is retiring to old-fashioned wifedom, it seems. No doubt Kate will perform her duties with her natural grace, but you wonder whether she might like to get a job like the rest of us.

J-Lo dumped husband hours before meeting Wills and Kate

It should have been the glittering highlight of their seven-year union.

Multi-millionaire superstars Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were due to be guests of honour at the top table with Prince William and Kate at last weekend’s glittering Bafta gala in Hollywood.

Instead, J-Lo sashayed down the red carpet in a provocatively clinging green Pucci gown accompanied by her mother, Guadalupe, a former kindergarten teacher from the Bronx. She was also missing her wedding ring.

Royal aides, along with the singer-actress’s millions of fans, were mystified.

But on Friday night in a statement issued through J-Lo’s publicist, the couple, worth an estimated £240 million, announced they are to divorce.

They called the decision ‘painful’ and ‘difficult’. But The Mail on Sunday has spoken to several of the couple’s closest confidantes and can reveal they began to drift apart three years after their marriage in June 2004.

‘This is not a surprise,’ J-Lo’s stylist Phillip Bloch said in an exclusive interview last night.

‘Marc is very controlling. In the beginning she liked that because he stood up to her, and in the early days he was very much in love with her and she was with him.’

But the couple are said to have begun to squabble soon after 41-year-old J-Lo’s mother moved into their Long Island, New York mansion in 2008 to help look after their newborn twins.

‘They also clashed when she learned he owed millions in unpaid taxes on the Long Island estate,’ said film-maker Ed Meyer, an associate of J-Lo’s first husband, Cuban-born club-owner Ojani Noa.

‘The other problem was that they couldn’t agree where to live.

'J-Lo’s career is in Hollywood and she wanted to live in their Malibu mansion and Marc loved New York. She was going to move to New York in a last-ditch effort to save the marriage. But last Monday I heard it was all over.’

In November 2002 – after a second failed marriage, to backing dancer Cris Judd – Jennifer became engaged to actor Ben Affleck, declaring he was ‘the one’.

But The Mail on Sunday has learned that years before, another man, top Latin American recording artist Marc Anthony, had become infatuated with her.

J-Lo broke up with Affleck in January 2004.

That June Marc, now 42, finalised his divorce from former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres.

Four days later they married at Jennifer’s home in Beverly Hills.

They presented themselves as a fairytale couple.

But soon after the birth of the twins, the couple are said to have begun to argue.

‘J-Lo’s mother wanted to run her life and Marc wanted to run her life and I don’t think J-Lo wanted anyone to control her,’ said Meyer.

Friends say J-Lo made one last attempt to save the marriage with her offer to move back to New York.

‘She fought to make it work for the sake of the children,’ said Phillip Bloch. ‘She desperately did not want a third divorce.’

Prince Charles moans that Wills and Kate are "overshadowing" other royals

Prince Charles has told of his worries that Prince William and Kate Middleton’s show-stopping tour of North America turned into one long photo-opportunity.

Charles fears the couple’s glamorous image will now overshadow the worthy work of other senior royals.
He told Palace aides that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s trip focused too much on media coverage and not on the serious reasons behind the tour.

The 11-day jaunt, when hundreds of thousands turned out to greet the royals in Canada and the US, became billed as the William and Kate Show.

The newlyweds were splashed across every TV network and newspaper as they met the public and a string of celebs such as David Beckham, Nicole Kidman, Tom Hanks and Jennifer Lopez.

Sources close to Charles, 62, say that on the one hand he is delighted the couple received the same welcome he and Princess Diana got on their 1983 Canada tour.

But he also drew a comparison with his gruelling 11-day visit to Canada with Camilla two years ago which attracted small crowds and modest coverage.

A royal insider says Charles – who prides himself on being a campaigner on the environment and architecture – is now seeking a makeover to attract more fans.

Royal author Phil Dampier said: “Charles felt overshadowed by Diana and now it seems he feels overshadowed by their son. Some people may think he is jealous. I have always felt that as soon as William got married, Charles would feel sidelined.

“From that moment people would be less interested in what he has to say on issues such as the environment and architecture if, on the same day, Kate is wearing a new dress.”

Kate dominated the headlines with up to five outfit changes a day, including casual jeans and a stetson at a rodeo in Calgary.

Mr Dampier added: “When Charles and Camilla visited Canada two years ago they were greeted by relatively small crowds. They are in their 60s and are not what you would call glamorous.

“Charles is well respected in Canada but he does not have the X factor. With the Queen’s headline-grabbing Irish tour too, Charles feels his work could get overlooked.”

Government insiders say Charles’ fears have been echoed in Downing Street, which believes the interest in the couple could overshadow other royal events such as next year’s Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

But since returning last week to their home in Anglesey, where the prince is an RAF search and rescue pilot, William and Kate say they intend to maintain a low profile.

There's always time for a kiss! Katie Price and Leandro Penna cuddle up on designer shopping spree

They might have been shopping for the latest designer goods in London yesterday, but that didn't stop Katie Price and Leandro Penna indulging in a passionate kiss as they dashed between the shops.

Katie, who donned a cowgirl-inspired outfit of tiny denim hotpants, knee-high boots and pink shirt, looked smitten as she cuddled up to her Argentinian beau while they checked out clothes in shops including Dolce & Gabbana and Arrogant Cat.

The 33-year-old star teamed her rodeo-style outfit with a pair of glittery sunglasses Dame Edna Everage would certainly have approved of, along with a deep golden tan and huge curly hair.

Farewell Harry Potter | HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 2

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 2

Xbox 360, PS3 £49.99

The final Harry Potter game continues in the same cover-shooter gameplay style that we saw in Deathly Hallows: Part 1.

It’s basically Gears Of War with wands instead of lancer guns and Harry Potter and Hermione Granger instead of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago.

You get a set piece-laden tour of JK Rowling’s magical world. Along the way, you’ll escape the underground caverns of Gringott’s wizarding bank after facing off against a dragon, battle Death Eaters through the quaint snowy streets of Hogsmeade, and come face to face with the evil Lord Voldemort in the final dramatic duel.

Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is not a particularly difficult game, which is unsurprising considering the young audience it’s aimed at.

It is usually a case of matching the right spell against the right dark wizard defences, and more skilled gamers will comfortably fly through it.

This final instalment is a polished if repetitive affair that’s bolstered by the keen mining of the reference material. Being able to play as minor Hogwarts stars such as Neville Longbottom and Seamus Finnigan – as well as Harry and his better-known friends – will certainly raise a smile from the legions of loyal Potterites.
It’s just a shame that more time isn’t given to exploring the wondrous surroundings rather than concentrating just on blasting every one of the hundreds of masked wand-wielders that stand before you.

While it visually captures the essence of the Potter world and isn’t lacking in action, Part 2 doesn’t quite qualify as being truly magical.

Fans dress in cloaks, hats to theatres for Potter farewell

New Delhi: The final adieu to `Harry Potter` has turned out to be as expected - special! Fanatical fans are queuing up for the last movie of the multi-billion dollar franchise, and literally living up the spirit of wizardry by sporting black cloaks, witch hats, and magic wands.

A group of seven college girls were spotted with black hats and a wand each at a multiplex here while a group of boys, oblivious to the sweltering heat and humidity, wore black cloaks to the hall to celebrate the magic of "Harry Potter" as the last of the lot released Friday.

"We have been waiting for this so long. It is an emotional moment for us to come and see the final movie. It is unbelievable that there will no Potter to look forward to after this. But we wanted to do something special our way, and give Harry Potter a special farewell that it so rightly deserves," said 21-year-old Samridhi Mathur, who attracted a lot of attention with her pointy hat.

The fans sat on the edge of their seats during action sequences, and boy wizard Harry`s victory called for cheers galore.

"We love you Harry!" viewers cheered and hooted in the hall. Emotions or celebrations - whatever it was - the craze for it was alive and kicking.

The Harry Potter phenomenon, which came straight out of struggling single mother J.K. Rowling`s imagination, cast its first magical spell on Indian fans in 2001. A decade later, that magic has increased manifold.

Disappointment had set in among fans as the advance bookings did not open until Thursday evening due to a reported rift between multiplex owners and the film`s distributors over revenue-sharing. But the script ran as per schedule thereafter.

Multiplex owners admit that all shows for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2", which has set a new box office record in the US by amassing $43.5 million from midnight screenings alone, are currently houseful.

"All the shows are full. The response is phenomenal. People of all age groups - young, middle-aged and old are coming to watch the film and enjoying it," Punit Sahay of Spice Cinemas told reporters.

According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Friday`s early estimates for the movie in India is Rs.4.75 crore - including all four versions - English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

The movie has opened in a 2D and a 3D format, but if Munish Sharma of Satyam Cineplexes is to be believed, Indian viewers are lapping up the 3D version. However, any official figures are yet to be received.

The last movie of the over $6 billion franchise ends as tradition - with the victory of good over evil as Harry Potter, with his friends, manages to find and destroy the remaining Horcruxes and the evil Lord Voldemort`s ashes fly up in the air.

The movie just doesn`t end at that - it "pleasantly" surprises by fast forwarding 20 years ahead and showing Harry, his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley married, with children, says Prachi Khanna, a 25-year-old Potter enthusiast, without hitting on the spoiler alert button.

"Of course, the books end on a happy note, with Harry married to Ginny, and Hermione and Ron settled together with kids. But I didn`t expect that they would show it in the film.

"It was a little weird to see these young, 20-something actors in an avatar of being 40, but the inclusion of that track was a pleasant surprise. It was nice that they ended it the way the book ends - completing the franchise in every sense," said Khanna.

Shah Rukh Khan to ride Batman-like batpod in ‘Ra.One’!

Mumbai: If Superman can fly, Batman has the state of the art gadgets and Spiderman web-slings through air, can our desi super hero be left behind? News has it that SRK will soon be sporting a bike similar to Batman’s batpod in desi superhero flick ‘RA.One.’

Apparently, SRK has decided to go for batpod-like superbike in one of the high octane action sequences in ‘RA.One,’ which will be shot at Filmistan Studios, Goregaon.

The scene will have SRK riding the monster bike, which bears a striking resemblance to Batman`s batpod.

Talking to a daily, a source said, “SRK will be doing a rescue act in the scene, which also requires him to indulge in some real adrenaline pumping stunts.”

It is believed that Shah Rukh Khan will do the stunt without a body double. “Shah Rukh is not particularly fond of bikes himself. In fact, every time director Anubhav Sinha suggested that he bought one, Khan just refused saying there is no use for a bike,” added the source.

While SRK is busy holidaying in London with his family, director Anubhav Sinha is busy preparing the sets for the shoot. Anaita Shroff Adajania will be working on SRK’s outfit for the special scene.

Kat meets Sallu, SRK on birthday

Actor Katrina Kaif is striking a perfect balance by being close to both the Khans —Salman and Shah Rukh. Kat, who celebrated her 27th birthday on Saturday, first met Salman on the sets of his film Bodyguard in Mumbai and later attended a surprise birthday bash organised by Shah Rukh

Kat spent a long time with Salman and reached SRK’s house, Mannat, only at 5am. According to sources, the party was meant to be a success bash for the Katrina-Hrithik Roshan starrer Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and later turned into a birthday party, where Kat even cut a cake. It may be recalled that three years ago, Salman and SRK had a huge fight on Kat’s birthday and ever since the actor chose to stay away from Mumbai on her birthday. However, this time she decided to stick around and play the diplomat.

A controversy has ensued nevertheless and SRK is now under heavy criticism for hosting a party just two days after the serial blasts in Mumbai.

Vivek Oberoi To Learn To Fly Krissh 2

Afer Shahid Kapoor, Vivek Oberoi is the latest one to take flying lessons for his next. The actor is looking forward to get a license to shoot climax action scene with Hrithik Roshan. A well-placed source told Mid Day that Vivek has enrolled at a flying institute in Florida, US. And as and when he can, he takes off, to complete his flying hours before he can get his license.

Reportedly, his character is inspired from Patrick Stewart's Professor Charles Xavier in the Hollywood's X-Men series. There are quite a few mutants in this flick too. Chitrangada Singh's character is based on Mystique, who can transform herself completely into another individual.

Rakesh Roshan has come up with one more twist in the flick. Vivek Oberoi will be seen glued to a wheelchair for most part of the film and then will be cured before the climax, Mid Day revealed.

Amusingly, Professor Charles also has a hi-tech plane for himself and his team, which may be the inspiration behind the specially designed plane for Vivek's character in the movie.

The production house is trying to keep the other details of the movie under wraps to build up suspense for the viewers.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham sequel soon

Karan Johar has confirmed a tabloid that is, in fact, trying to make a sequel to the hit 2001 Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. The rest will be presented in the original cast - Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor.

"It's a viable idea. I'm not opposed to it. It would be a brave, if I do," Karan says Mumbai Mirror.

The cast is also all excited about the sequel.

"It's very strange. But all six core members of the cast is so dear to me now as they were 10 years ago when I made the film. I'm sure they are also charged for the sequel, as I am, "said Karan, after unveiling his plans about the sequel.

The idea was planted in his head, one of them.

'Big B made him understand that a suite was not only possible but desirable. Mr. Bachchan also said that Karan could not remove it, "said a source at the tabloid.

Amitabh Bachchan has finally looks his way. 69-year-old actor has already blogged about how he would like to see Raichand family saga, would be carried forward. Recently it was shown that the sequel would be to examine the brothers' life after the split.

"And 'the story of brothers and growth problems that arise in their self-understanding and operation of the business empire, the father of a split in them, and so on ..."

It may be that the Big B's request led him to abandon the idea further. But what could be more attractive is the fact that the sequel, as a double Dhamaal, Murder 2 and Golmaal have done much better than most of the original films.

We will wait to see if they can remove Raichand family again.

Vivek Pleasure To Turn "bad"

Vivek Oberoi is working with Hrithik Roshan for Krrish 2 the first time in Saathiya and actor says he will be the best movie villain of all time. Hrithik and Vivek started his career at the same time. Although they were friends for a long time, will be the first time they're on screen together.

"Hrithik was a good friend for years, and it's great to finally work with him. It took almost a decade, but it's finally happening," says Oberoi.

While Hrithik is playing the hero par excellence in Krrish 2, The Oberoi Gabbar promises to be the company.

"It's fun to play against a Ram Raavan. Krrish is a trademark and to be part of this legacy is no less an honor. I'm actually treat this as a film that would bring Gabbar in me. I want to be the best villain ever, "said the actor.

Outside of the film, Oberoi says he has a stable personal life with his wife, Priyanka.

`Aarakshan` is not dergatory to Scheduled Castes in any wayFilmmaker Prakash Jha wants to have a discussion and dispel the doubts of the National Commission of Scheduled Castes (NCSC), which has sought to see his film "Aarakshan" even before the censor board watches it.

Jha said, having high regard for the commission, he is ready to have a linear discussion to dispel their doubts before arriving at any decision on their demand.

What are Katrina and Ali Zafar up to?

What are Katrina and Ali Zafar up to? Pakistani pop star Ali Zafar and our own Katrina Kaif are now back planning their live gigs. Ali being a seasoned stage performer has a headstart. But we understand Imran Khan and Katrina would be burning up a lot of live energy at rehearsals before they actually go on stage.

Says Ali, “Yes, that’s the plan. I have been told Katrina and Imran will be joining me on stage. Agreed they aren’t musicians. But we’re all performers and part of one project We start as soon as I return to India. ”

Ali has been asked by Yashraj Films the producers of Mere Brother Ki Dulhan to help Katrina and Imran acclimatize themselves to live performances.

Says Ali modestly, “Maybe my USP is live singing. But they will take to the stage quickly. I know we’ll have fun. ”

Ali Zafar, recently voted the hottest male actor of 2011 in a survey, will soon be in India to star in another film. “Before I do David Dhawan’s Chashme Buddoor I’ve signed another film in Mumbai. As for being voted the hottest star I’m grateful to all my fans who have voted for me. ”

Apparently Ali’s closest competitor Ranveer Singh is upset about losing the ‘hottest’ crown to Ali.

Turning supremely diplomatic Ali says, “I’ve met Ranveer. He was extremely sweet and nice. I really like him. He’s super-talented. I wish him all the best. ”

G@*du is shocking and too sexually explicit!!!

G@*du is shocking and too sexually explicit!!!As the screening of controversial film Gandu still remains uncertain, we speak to Q, the director of this movie, who thinks that India is on the brink of sexual revolution

Kaushik Mukherjee or Q's highly controversial film, Gandu is scheduled to be screened with a special permission from the Ministry of Information and Technology on July 15, in spite of it being considered too sexually explicit.

However, the ministry is now said to be having second thoughts and might insist on a disclaimer before the screening, saying that it is for select audience and has not been censored. The fate of the screening will be only known today.

Excerpts of an interview with the director...

Did you expect so much resistance for the film, even while making it?
No. The point of the film, the central premise of the work is sexuality or sexual provocation and also lot of other elements that go with it. This was a simple device to attract attention; otherwise the film would have been brushed off as an art house cinema.

Are you sort of pleased with the shock value the film is getting?
I don't see why it is shocking for us. This kind of provocation has been a part of every kind of culture. What I am doing right now is a clear reference to the kind of postmodern punk or post 90's shock cinema that came from Japan and Korea a very highly developed form of art.

For me, it is difficult to understand why people keep saying that it is something new. All they have to do is simply google about it.

Was it awkward shooting explicit scenes, how did you find like-minded actors?
There was no awkwardness. It's a small and tight team. Most of them are friends. They trust me. Moreover, they are used to the experiences we have all grew up on. All of us watch this kind of cinema.

A film so small, black and white, with only a coloured sex scene, shot on a digital SLR, could you calculate the film's final budget?
Actually, I really don't know it myself. In fact, the financing mode of Gandu could be a case study. You have heard of crowd funding, social funding. This is based on a European model, co-production theory. I will plan the script and the film according to the resources available to me.

So I will be working backwards. If the content is not produced or supported by anyone else, we will have to keep doing this. So the economics and the available resources will determine how the film will proceed. Like Artists work on recycled products, it's like that.

This permission from the ministry for just one screening. Was it too much of a hassle?
To be honest, I didn't do anything. Pranav Ashar is the one who really worked hard to get at least one screening. He has shown that it is possible to organise something like this.

We hear Gandu is the first of the series...
Yes. The real issue is the production of this kind of content. Cinema is seen as a commodity. I am seriously scared of the kind of movies that are being made. The idea of cinema as a capitalist tool is that it should not provoke the audience, but just provide entertainment. I refuse to believe that there aren't more people who think like me, and who want to take action.

Maybe there are. But it takes a lot of courage...
It is a huge risk in a family driven environment. The question being how do you face your mother? The truth is we are made to be ashamed of our sexuality all the time.

Are you going to address homosexuality in some of your later movies?
What is there to deal with homosexuality? It's not something different. Every one of us is polysexual. It is in our culture. Take kama sutra, Upanishads, Vaishav Bahabali, shaivak logic, sexuality is mellifluous.

Yes, to think ours was the most sexually vibrant country...
We actually had reached a pinnacle. Years and years of this conscious effort to understand human sexuality, ideate on that, everything was done, here in India. But once we reached the highest point, decadence set in. It is a circle. The sexual movement has to start rolling again, and probably, now is the time

On a positive stride

Speaking about the permissions, Pranav Ashar, head of Taj Enlightenment film society (which is organising the Naya Film Festival, where Gandu will be screened) is pretty optimistic that the permission will be granted albeit with the disclaimer. "Even earlier we were permitted to screen a film like Inshallah Football.

Gandu will go for censorship soon after. Some cuts will be made by us even before sending it to the censors. The film will also be released in DVDs and most probably with the name changed to G or The Loser, to attract lesser controversies, " he said.

Zindagi Na Milege Dobara | Movie Review

Zindagi Na Milege DobaraActors: Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akthar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif

Director: Zoya Akhtar

Rating: ***1/2

First the good news. "Zindagi…" is one of the most nuanced, evenly paced and well executed films in commercial Indian cinema.

This cross between "Dil Chahta Hai" and "Sideways" is funny and honest, but it is marred by one fundamental flaw - it has nothing important to say.

Yes, to a select few, neo-rich one percent of its audience who find nirvana swimming under Spanish seas or for whom freedom is feeling the wind in your hand from a high speed car, the message is loud and clear - you only live once so live it full.

But one has to wonder, should a commercial film be made keeping just one percent of the audience in mind?

Yes, it is a message that everyone else needs as well, but should that message ride on a pleasure trip through Spanish landscape where there is beauty but no 'zindagi' or should it have been closer home, in the squalor and madness and 'life' of this nation.

Three old friends - Arjun (Hritik Roshan), Imran (Farhan Akthar) and Kabir (Abhay Deol) - go on a three-week bachelor's road trip through Spain before Kabir's marriage, only to come face to face with their own fears and insecurities.

Globally there are too many road-trip films for Zoya Akhtar to bring anything new to the cinematic table.

What she could have done was to have enough emotional pull for the viewer to empathise with the characters.

But would you empathise with the fatherly, marriage-related and heartbreak problems of three rich men who really have everything going for them? Besides its one percent audience, the rest would find the existential angst of these three men, a creation of their own vanity.

Yet, besides its many flaws, dishonesty is not one of them. It's an honest film about the type of people the filmmaker interacts with daily. Sadly, that is perhaps the only cross section of society that Zoya Akhtar has known in her urban living.

The problem with the film is thus the problem in the worldview of its maker, which is extremely limited in scope.

And that is a shame because Zoya is a nuanced and refined filmmaker. She could do wonders with a story that is real and about real men and women.

"Zindagi…" thus actually ends up being like a big-budget film with the heart and audience of a small-budget indie. And that mismatch will perhaps do the film in at the box office.

Cinematically though, Zoya does try desperately to transcend the obvious, to mean the message rather than say it, like say a "Sideways" or "Lost in Translation" does. And though she knocks on the door of this transcendence, she is unable to pass through.

Commercial filmmakers in the past, either came from the grassroots like a Mehboob or Guru Dutt, or were concerned about it like Raj Kapoor.

Their films hence reflected - sometimes directly - and often in the films written by Zoya's father Javed Akthar, allegorically, the angst, pain and the struggle for survival of the nation's teeming masses.

Sadly, as their world ended up becoming cocooned from life around, the connection their kids had with reality, became limited. The result are some really well made films, but ones with 'zindagi' only in their titles, not in their guts.

Murder 2 | Movie Review

Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Prashant Narayanan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sulagna Panigrahi

Directors: Mohit Suri

Rating: ***

The sequel to "Murder" is nothing like the first part of the frenetic franchise. And Jacqueline Fernandez who has been built up in "Murder 2" as the next Mallika Sherawat is nothing like the overrated Mallika…. Thank God for that! Fernandez exudes an unbridled sunniness even when pouting in the bare minimum. Alas, she doesn't have much to do in "Murder 2" except swathe the dark drama in a spot of sunshine.

God knows this film about the devil-unleashed, surprisingly written by a woman (Shagufta Rafique) needs that little of sunshine. It is a desperately dark film. The characters are wretchedly unhappy. No matter which side of the moral line they are positioned they are standing screaming into the abyss that is suburban life. These people need serious help.

This then, is the world Mahesh Bhatt has bequeathed to us. Take it and bleed it.

Director Mohit Suri who earlier took us on a jolting trip through the world of prostitution, pimps and desperate cops in "Kalyug" takes the same route again. On this occasion the journey is far more ruthless and rigorously implemented to create horror repugnance and hatred for a word that we've created for coming generations.

In the typical Mahesh Bhatt style "Murder 2" doesn't waste time in back-projections and story build-up. He goes straight for the kill.

With trenchant immediacy director Mohit Suri (back in "Kalyug" form after the misfire that was his last film "Crook") tells us the story of a psychopathic killer who kills prostitutes with the pleasure that makes your stomach churn and look anxiously towards the future about your daughter who is just stepping into the big wide world.

Who knows if the man sitting next to her in the movie theatre is a closet-nutcase with a collection of hacksaws in his house, and not to carve up the Christmas turkey.

Prashant Narayanan as the psychopath plays the character at such an even pitch he makes your blood freeze in fear and revulsion. Here's a man who could be that ghoul who butchered all those kids in the Nethra killings and then ate them up without a burp.

The 'hero' in "Murder 2" is a burn-out suspended cop who makes money out of criminals, stays sullen and haunted throughout the film except when he goes for the kiss, and offers his girlfriend a wad of notes after making love. To buy the fridge, he says. Naturally the lady freezes.

Force of habit, we say. Hashmi has done this kind of a role repeatedly. The kissing and vigorous bedroom activities are quickly taken care of in the first 15 minutes. Wouldn't want the lovers of the serial kisser to feel they're being cheated in favour of the serial killer.

The wacked-out killer in "Murder 2" doesn't eat his victims. He just cuts them down to sighs…and groans and shrieks of pain and records their dying voices to get his rockers off….

The plot seems original. The narration is clenched and the characters driven by a desperate urge to assert themselves before death rings their doorbell.

The savagery with which the college-going call girl (Sulagna Panigrahi) is brought to her gruesome death becomes a metaphor for the loss of innocence and the triumph of diabolism that is often garbed in designer labels these days.

"Murder 2" is not a pleasant film to view. The psychopath's killings are done in graphic detail. The storytelling offers no respite from the brutality. Most of the time we are looking at happenings that we would rather not see. But see, we must.

"Murder 2" is a mirror of our amoral venomous times when no relationship is sacred anymore. Mohit Suri remains in command of the murky material and traumatized characters. While most episodes hold together in a riveting rhythm of life's most unsavoury truths, the sequences featuring Prashant Naraynan work better than the rest of the film. He lends the proceedings a credibility that is unsettling.

Prateik wants to be in Salman's team

The actor will approach Salman Khan to play for Mumbai Heroes in the next season of Celebrity Cricket League

Prateik, who played a school football player in Dum Maaro Dum, is also a cricket enthusiast. He is keen to participate in the next season of Celebrity Cricket League (CCL) initiated by Sohail Khan.

He is now planning to meet Salman Khan soon, to ensure a place for him in the Mumbai Heroes team for the next tournament.

Our source further informed that Prateik is a pretty good pace bowler and was upset that he couldn't make it to the first edition of CCL this year.

When contacted, Prateik confirmed his plans of approaching Salman.

"Not many know that I was a fast bowler for my school team. I've played cricket in the inter-school tournaments and also at the state level, " recalled the actor, enthusing, "So I'd really like to play for Salman's team."

Considering that Mumbai Heroes, led by Sunil Shetty, couldn't make it to the finals this year, here's hoping Prateik's pace bowling helps them the next time.

Rajnikant flies back home without doctor's consent, Deepika to visit him soon

The return of Rajnikanth from Singapore, after a month of treatment and rest, has triggered off a chain of mass hysteria among his fans.

According to sources, the southern superstar was asked to spend some more time recovering in the Asian country but seems like he missed his family and fans too much.

"He missed home. He missed his friends, family and fans. He insisted on returning now, " says a source very close to Rajnikanth.

As the news spread that he is landing in Chennai on Wednesday night at 10 pm, crowds began to flock at the airport and near his residence.

Fans and admirers were seen with pooja thalis and garlands in hand to greet the actor who is considered no less than an idol down south.

Says the source, "It's crazy over here in Chennai. As soon as news spread that Rajniji is returning, all of the city got ready to give him a resounding reception."

While the shoot of Rana won't start before September Rajni's co-star Deepika Padukone has made it very clear to the actor that she'd join him for shoot whenever required. She would also be flying down to Chennai to meet him soon.

The actress has in fact been flooded with offers from Tamil cinema after she signed Rana. But she has made a commitment to Rajnikanth.
