Salman's highest paid actor!

The profit-sharing bit is right but actors, especially those like Salman and Akshay Kumar also charge a price and over and above it, they take home a share in the profits." Salman is reportedly charging Rs 17.5 cr for Ready and he is a partner on the project. So he will get a percentage of the profits too.

WORLD CUP 2011 Preview

Ravi Kapoor’s upcoming film World Cupp 2011, starring Ravi Kapoor himself is playing the character of Ravi Indulkar in the film. The resonance of the phrase “Master Blaster” always reminds us of India’s Cricketing Genius “Sachin Tendulkar” and Ravi Indulkar of film World Cup 2011 is no less than Sachin Tendulkar. The female fan following for Ravi Indulkar is as big as Sachin Tendulkar’s but director cum actor Ravi Kapoor says, “The character Ravi Indulkar is indeed a copy of Sachin Tendulkar yet he’s not the real master blaster as no one can ever be compared to the legendary cricketer Sachin.”

WORLD CUPP 2011World Cupp 2011 is a debut film of Ravi Kapoor. “Our film is definitely based on cricket and the lead character Ravi Indulkar is a great Batsman just like the Little Master. The only difference between the character Ravi and Sachin is the film World Cup 2011 is not based on Sachin Tendulkar’s life”, says an excited Ravi Kapoor. He added, “I’m a huge cricket lover, I’m just crazy about cricket and Sachin Tendulkar. I can’t tell you about the exhilarating feeling I had when I saw Sachin made a whooping 30,000 runs in his 20 years of cricket career. I’ve always been the Cricket Team Captain of my school and college and have played on National Level. I’ve been a good batsman too and used to make 100-150 runs very easily and it used to get very difficult for the opposite team to throw me off the game. I’m just mad about cricket and therefore to prove my madness, I made my debut film on cricket.”

Is the film World Cupp 2011 made keeping in mind the real World Cup, which is going to be held in February 2011? Ravi Kapoor answered, “Indians are so passionate about Cricket that we never thought about our profit with real World Cup coinciding with our film! All I want to tell the audience is whatever films they have seen previously based on cricket are completely different from the film we’ve made. When the movie releases, one can figure out the difference easily.”

The film World Cupp 2011 is complete and is set to release on 18th December. The budget of this film is 11 crores and the film also stars former cricket players Saba Karim and Nikhil Chopra, who play themselves in this film as cricket commentators.

The Fighter | Movie Review

Film: ‘The Fighter’;
Director: David O. Russell;
Actors: Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale and Amy Adams;
Rating: **** – More than a mere boxing film.

Hollywood has done endless sports films, of rising against the odds. One of the most popular sub-genre in this is boxing films. In this over populated field, is there a possibility for doing something new?

As ‘The Fighter’ shows, there indeed is.

Micky Ward is a boxer who is no more in his prime and is more like a stepping stone for bigger boxers. The reason for this is his family, especially his brother Dicky, a crack addict who, as a former boxer, is also his trainer.

After a brawl caused by Dicky almost causes Micky to lose his hand and land Dicky in prison, Micky decides to take life in his own hands. When Dicky returns, now reformed, Micky does not want him. But can the two brothers really stay separate.

The family – the greatest source of strength and support for an individual, can also become his weakness. And that is what Mickey faces. But if the family comes together once again, an individual can achieve anything.

Thus, while ‘Rocky’ was about an individual pushing himself to the top, ‘Raging Bull’ about a self-destructive boxer pulling himself down, ‘Cinderella Man’ about the interference of politics and economics, ‘The Fighter’ is the fight of an entire family that touches rock bottom only to stand by each other and emerge stronger.

Hence, though the main protagonist is Micky, the story is really not about him. It is more Dicky’s story, the crack addict who is an embarrassment not just to the family but to the entire town. It is not whether Micky can do it, but whether Dicky can improve himself because often a family is as strong as its weakest member.

The uneasy relationship of a family with each other, is one of the most soaring achievements of ‘The Fighter’. And this is exactly what moves the film from the realms of being a mere boxing film, to becoming a soaring family film that will stay relevant through the ages.

Christian Bale soars in his portrayal of a delusional addict Dicky. The performance could have gone over the top for an actor with lesser skills. But Bale’s delicate handling of a man who rises from his own ashes is deserving of an Oscar, something that can also be said of director David O. Russell who is also up for best director Oscar.

Hollywood talent manager hunts for Bollywood talent

Washington, Feb 27 – An Indian American talent manager in Hollywood, who manages stars like Irrfan Khan in the US, is on a mission to rope in top Bollywood stars and promote films to be shot in India.

‘I don’t see it as a challenge but more so as a creative interest,’ Jai Khanna, manager at Brillstein Entertainment Partners, a Hollywood talent management film and television production company, said in an interview.

‘Both industries are thriving with talented artists, technicians and stories,’ he told IANS. But ‘I have a special affinity with Indian cinema and talent, as a first generation Indo-American exposed to the best of both worlds.

‘With select talent from India, the ‘challenge’ is to bring them interesting material and have a creative and fruitful conversation about the benefits and negatives to engaging in such a project.’

Khanna, who booked Irrfan Khan on Sony’s new big-budget 3D Spider-Man film, Ang Lee’s ‘Life of Pi’ and HBO’s ‘In Treatment’, is now looking to get more big names from Bollywood into established Hollywood projects.

‘We have to recognize the stature of actors in India, for being at the top of their game, with an enormous body of work under their belt,’ he says.

‘There is no rush or urgency for Indian actors to work in Hollywood. There is never a sense of needing Hollywood to validate their work. I recognize and respect this,’ says Khanna.

‘As a result, it’s on a case-by-case basis on carefully looking at interesting opportunities in Hollywood, presenting them to our clients, then embarking on our next ‘challenge,’ which is to educate Hollywood on why such actor is the best selection for this role.’

‘There is an illusion about ‘Bollywood’ based on a naivety, that it’s all song and dance,’ says Khanna, who himself does not care much for that label.

‘An education is needed for Hollywood to watch the Indian films in its entirety, so there is a much deeper level of respect and admiration for the acting that surrounds such song and dance.

‘Again, the distribution and marketing of films can use improvement, here in the US,’ he says. ‘They fly below the radar and tend to target the NRIs only. There would be no challenge for any actor, if a wider audience was not exposed to their craft.’

On booking Irrfan Khan on the new Spider-Man film, Khanna said Sony executives were impressed by the overwhelming response to the Indian star’s work in ‘In Treatment’, ‘a highly respected show in Hollywood.’

‘Director Marc Webb reached out to personally express his enthusiasm for creating an interesting role for Irrfan, and making it worth his time,’ he recalled.

‘In regards to ‘Life Of Pi’, we were fortunate that Ang Lee is a student of world cinema. He was always a fan, and when ‘Life of Pi’ finally came together at Fox, it was an opportunity for both artists to finally collaborate.’

‘Out of respect to Ang, Irrfan was very helpful in casting the young male lead and lending support for the production to be done in India.’

But in general managing the Bollywood stars is very different from managing Hollywood stars, says Khanna.

‘Because of the distance of two cultures, there needs to be an extra level of education on our part to fully understand their stature in India. Again, we are dealing with the best of the best,’ he said.

‘They are not budding artists, but quite the opposite. They are exposed to great material, lucrative compensation, and country wide admiration. My strategy is to bring something different to the table,’ said Khanna.

‘One of the challenges is the pace of our business,’ he says. ‘It moves quickly, as stars are eager to find their next projects and start production. My experience with a select few from India, has been the slow turn around in feedback.

‘This lack of communication makes it difficult, but it’s getting better, with technology, or just helping to create a better infrastructure,’ he said, citing the example of Hrithik Roshan, who he says ‘is great with communication.’

But Indian talent outside India, such as Navi Rawat, Jimi Mistry, Maulik Pancholy and Parvesh Cheena, is different, Khanna said.

‘They are born and raised here, so they organically, understand the language, politics and nuances.

‘They may appear to be Indian on the outside, but the mentality is that of an American. They know the rules of the game very well.’

Rihanna, Ciara get into cyber catfight on Twitter

New York, Feb 27 – Rihanna and Ciara battled it out on Twitter on Friday night.

The two pop divas-and former flames of Chris Brown-got into a war of words after Ciara took a hit at the Barbados beauty on E!’s Fashion Police, reports the New York Daily News.

“I ran into her recently at a party. She wasn’t the nicest,” the 25-year-old recounted of Rihanna to Joan Rivers.

“It’s crazy because I’ve always loved and respected what she’s done in fashion… It wasn’t the most pleasant run-in.”

Rihanna apparently got wind of Ciara’s remarks and tweeted, “My bad Ci, did I forget to tip you?,” later adding “U gangsta huh?”

Ciara fought back on Twitter, posting “Trust me Rihanna you don’t want to see me on or off the stage,” to which the Disurbia singer replied “Good luck with booking that stage u speak of.”

Before things got uglier, Rihanna called a truce. “Ciara baby, I love you girl!” she Tweeted. “You hurt my feelings real bad on TV! I’m heartbroken! That’s why I retaliated this way! So sorry! Let’s make up.”

Ciara accepted the offer.

“Rhi, u know its always been love since day 1! Doing shows and everything,” she wrote. “You threw me off in that party! Apology accepted. Let’s chat in person.” (ANI)

Drive Angry | Movie Review

Film: ‘Drive Angry’;
Cast: Nicolas Cage, Amber Heard, William Fichtner, Billy Burke;
Director: Patrick Lussier;
Rating: ** – entertaining, but lacks focus.

What’s the point of a film that does not have a point? The answer is a question – why should a film have a point in the first place? If a film entertains, it should be enough. If one is a believer in that part, ‘Drive Angry’ is definitely a worthy watch.

Milton (Nicolas Cage) literally manages to escape the confinements of hell to prevent a cult led by Jonah King (Billy Burke) that murdered his daughter, from killing his grand daughter.

Only, he is pursued by The Accountant (William Fichtner), Satan’s supernatural sidekick and helped by a totally natural and mortal human, Piper (Amber Heard).

Despite literally having no point and not real charisma, ‘Drive Angry’ does have its moments where it leaps forwards and grabs the audience. Most of these have to do with the infusion of the wit in the film and the character of the accountant.

In terms of technique, the film tries hard to be like a comic book adaptation and though in parts it succeeds with some lines worthy of a repeat, it does look pretentious in other parts. But, it is not a film you watch with your logic glues to your head.

Amber Heard as the woman, who first drives Milton around and later becomes his partner in crime, shows off all that the Indian censor board has permitted.

Fans of brainless action films will have a few take home moments and lines. But beyond it all, it is a predictable ride that has to be taken only out of desperation and not out of a favour to cinema.

Emily Blunt had to fight for ballerina role in ‘The Adjustment Bureau’

London, Feb 27 – Actress Emily Blunt has revealed that she had to fight to land her ballerina role in new thriller ‘The Adjustment Bureau’.

Director George Nolfi wanted to cast a professional dancer, but the ‘Devil Wears Prada’ star was determined to change his mind after falling in love with the script, which is loosely based on author Philip K. Dick’s short story, Adjustment Team.

“I read the script and then about six weeks later, I finally got a meeting with George. I would call my agency and they would say, ‘No, no, they’re only meeting dancers’,” the Daily Express quoted Blunt as saying.

“He said he wanted a dancer and I said, ‘I think you’re wrong, I think you should have me!’” she said.

However, Blunt admits she struggled to stick to her strict diet and perfect her dance steps as she prepared for the shoot.

“I had about eight weeks before the movie started… so I was in the dance studio and in the gym. It’s the most demanding thing, physically, I’ve done,” she added. (ANI)

'Tanu Weds Manu' is an honest film: Anand

Director Anand L. Rai says that his " Tanu Weds Manu" is an honest film and portrays the world from the place he belongs - New Delhi.

"It's an honest film. You will feel you are one of them -- part of that love story and part of that humour. What I am very positive about the film is its honesty - and it will stay on," Rai told us.

"It's definitely from the world from where I come, the place where I belong, the roots where I started growing. Being a Delhiite I know the north Indian culture very well. When you are telling a story it should be portrayed in a right way, then it reaches everywhere. It's a fiction but it still remains a slice of life for me," he added.

The film released Friday.

The director didn't have any intention to build up a new on-screen pair but he was sure his lead cast Kangana and Madhavan would fit best for the characters Tanu and Manu.

"It was from the word go. I had to slog for it. It's a love story. It's a very Indian romantic comedy that I had to make and I have to see to it that I should make it the way, it gets delivered in the right way. First thing for that was a fearless right casting.

"I was very sure that the Manu character should be played by Madhavan and for Tanu, I was looking for someone who was hungry for this kind of character and has the potential to perform. Kangana had all the guts (to) take on all the challenges. She just broke her image, moved into this world and did it," said Rai.

He didn't write the script keeping them in mind though, said Rai.

"I was very honest to my characters. I was getting it right there, then I started thinking for it," said Rai.

Rai made his directorial debut with "Strangers" and then he made "Thodi Life Thoda Magic" (2008), which were duds and the director regrets that though his first film was appreciated by reviewers, it bombed because he didn't bother to connect his film with the audience.

"When I made 'Strangers' I got nice feedback for myself in terms of reviews but I was very selfish while making the film. I realized that I missed on to the major thing -- the connection with the audience, which was not there. When I made 'Tanu Weds Manu' it was just the audience I thought about," said Rai.

Rai hinted that his next movie would also be a love story.

"After 'Tanu Weds Manu' there is still a bigger chunk of this emotion lying in me. I would get rid of it in the coming one and then move on.

"I will spend little more time with 'Tanu Weds Manu'. I know the script of my next film, I know the region where it belongs, but I am in no rush," said Rai.

Jamia students making their mark in B'wood

They are making films with big names and editing critically acclaimed movies. The alumni of Jamia Millia Islamia's Mass Communication Research Centre, who are going places in the film industry, give credit to the university for shaping them up.

At the same time, they feel ex-students working in Bollywood should have a strong network and also interact with those pursuing their course.

Lauding their university, directors Danish Aslam, Alankrita Shrivastava and editor Sandeep Singh Bajeli say that the environment and experience that Jamia provides played a major role in moulding their personalities and giving them the right perspectives.

It also provided mindspace and instilled confidence by laying stress on practical teaching, they feel.

Bajeli, editor of the critically acclaimed film " Lahore" and "Phas Gaye Re Obama", says Jamia does not limit students to any one aspect of filmmaking but allows them to explore and experiment in every department.

"After a strong foundation was laid in the first year, where I learnt from puppetry to radio jockeying to street theatre, I started grasping the finer nuances of filmmaking and learnt intuitively. Jamia encouraged me to have an independent outlook," he said.

Danish Aslam, director of Imran Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer "Break Ke Baad", has the similar views.

"The special thing about Jamia is that it offers a broad course focused on practical knowledge. It was only after familiarising us with various other creative mediums apart from filmmaking that the regular course commenced," he said.

Alankrita, who debuted in Bollywood with Gul Panag starrer "Turning 30", says the experience at the varsity freed her mind and helped her to discover herself.

"The place has an unique atmosphere and the training enabled me to work hard in the industry. We watched and studied a lot of films during those days, which eventually helped us significantly," said the director.

Apart from the course structure, faculty and equipment, which are among the finest, the university makes sure that its students are modest and humble.

"There are many people in the industry from other reputed media institutes who are very arrogant. They have a superiority complex for no reason. But this is not the case with all of us who are from Jamia," said Alankrita.

Other Jamia students believe it's all about the approach towards the course.

"The thing about the courses at Jamia is that they are general in nature and not specific to say just direction or editing. Moreover, the focus of these courses is not to get you an entry into Bollywood, but a well-rounded learning," said Akshay Singh, cinematographer of "Turning 30". He has also worked on films like "Raajneeti" and "Kites".

However, the students feel interaction between the ex-students working in the film industry and those who are pursuing their degrees should increase. They also emphasise on better networking among pass-outs in Mumbai.

"The sharing of knowledge between us and the students would be wonderful and beneficial for both. Our experiences would help them to get a head start in Bollywood. Therefore, the interaction levels must go up," said Aslam.

Agreed Alankrita, who was unhappy with the lack of communication and suggested that both sides should intermingle once in a while.

Ex-Jamia students working in Mumbai were oblivious to the fact that others from the same institution were also in the industry.

"There were people whom I knew, but was unaware that they were from Jamia too which did come as a surprise. Ultimately, these things do affect you when you are in a new place and a support structure is surely needed," said Bajeli.

Gulshan Grover replaces Mickey Rourke

Gulshan Grover, was recently in Los Angeles to shoot for one of the PETA campaigns. The whole crew including the models and the photographers worked free for the love of animals.

Grover shot two campaigns for PETA – one against wearing leather and the second one to control the number of dogs. Interestingly, Grover has replaced Hollywood actor Mickey Rourke in this campaign, as earlier, this campaign was done by Mickey Rourke. Says Grover, "Don't kill someone for looks, instead kill them by your looks. If you wear leather, an animal has to be killed for that, but if you wear pleather, it looks the same and nobody has to be killed. We are all wearing pleather in the shoot." Grover told us that PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk thanked all of them personally for their contribution to animals.
