Bollywood-Hollywood love affair must grow – Russell Peters (Interview)

Here’s one man who is not in love with Hindi films and its jhatkas. But Canadian Russell Peters, who is of Anglo-Indian origin and has been an international standup comedian for 23 years, says the confluence of Bollywood and Hollywood must grow.

Ontario-native Peters, who has worked in Akshay Kumar’s Indo-Canadian venture “Breakaway”, was here in India to promote “Speedy Singhs”, the Hindi version of the movie, when IANS caught up with him.

“Collaborations between India and the West are going to be fruitful. The love affair of Bollywood and Hollywood ought to grow and I think ‘Speedy Singhs’ is a good move from both the sides.

“We are in a time now where we do not have boundaries or any walls separating the two industries. Thanks to the internet, everybody can see everything. The reach has become global for every artist. It’s just a matter of time before people decide and consolidate the two. Also, there is no reason why Indians in India and Indians abroad, the NRIs, can’t do something together,” he said.

The 40-year-old, who was born in Canada to Anglo-Indian parents, feels it is advisable for NRIs to come and get a taste of modern India, which has gone through several changes over the years.

“It’s a good opportunity for Indians who are born and raised abroad to come back and get a reality check of what India is like now. And India today is not the same India that it was 10-15 years ago. It’s way miles ahead of what we think it is. I also feel people here are way more smarter than people in the West. They are way more in tune with the rest of the world,” he added.
Peters has been entertaining global audiences through his stand-up acts. He is now looking forward to receiving a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. It will be inducted Oct 1 in Toronto.

“I have earned my place and now I am getting my due recognition with being honoured by the star at Walk of Fame in Canada when I go back home. To be honoured with something like this and to be recognized, not as Indo-Canadian but as a Canadian, is a pretty big deal,” he said, flashing a big smile.

Peters, who is known for his observational comedy about communities and culture around the world, says he finds Bollywood “useless”, but admits he is in love with the country’s entertainment capital, Mumbai.

“I don’t follow, nor do I want to follow, Bollywood. I’ve no time for Bollywood. I don’t care about Bollywood at all and I don’t even want to do any film. I don’t like the Bollywood jhatkas and matkas that they call it – the singing and dancing and also the dramatic crying,” he said without hesitation.

Raise an eyebrow at that, and he retorts: “It’s my opinion! Obviously there are billions who like and love them, but I have never seen a Bollywood film in my life. I have refused doing it earlier and will do so in future.”

“But I love India. I have been here a couple of times. India is one place in the world that I see as very comfortable, and honestly Mumbai is the one city that I see I could fit in, I could live in. I love Mumbai,” he said.

Peters kickstarted his career in acting with “Show Me The Funny” in 1997 and has since starred in films like “Lord Have Mercy” and “Comedy Now” among others.

“Breakaway” is the first film where he has worked in an Indian production with an Indian star-cast, featuring Anupam Kher, Vinay Virmani, Hollywood actress Camilla Belle and Gurpreet Ghuggi.

Actor Matthew Morrison likes being naked

London: Actor Matthew Morrison can get annoyed with fans waiting outside his house because he likes to walk around naked.

The 32-year-old actor is best known for the role of Will Schuester in "Glee", reports femalefirst.co.uk.

"I love walking around naked in my house. Who doesn`t? But when I walk by the window I have to make sure there`s no one outside," he said.

"For me, the most absurd fans are the ones who camp outside my house. It`s strange. Luckily, I have a big gate and it`s very protected, but it`s a little scary as I look around for cameras before I sunbathe in my yard," he added.

Kissing scene is like shooting action sequence: Ranbir Kapoor

New Delhi: Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor has locked lips with his co-stars on screen and says that shooting kissing scenes is like doing an action sequence.

"I do love stories most of the time. Naturally kissing scenes do come up. I don`t say `daalo` (put in) kissing scenes. Moreover, it`s too awkward to kiss a girl in front of hundred people on the sets and in front of camera and lights," Ranbir, who had kissing scenes in "Bachna Aae Haseeno", said on India TV`s show Aapki Adalat.

"It`s too mechanical. For me, a kissing scene is just like an action sequence. Normally, I finish off the kissing scene in a single take," added the actor who locked lips with Priyanka Chopra in "Anjaana Anjaani".

The actor, who is busy in promoting his upcoming film "Rockstar", however, got conscious when asked about his broken relationship with actress Deepika Padukone.

"I had a relationship with Deepika. She still continues to be my good friend. But the issue on which our relationship broke is a personal matter. It will be very unfair to the girl if I speak about that, because Deepika is single and may marry someone in future", Ranbir said.

Meanwhile, the two actors are set to romance on big screen again in Karan Johar`s new production "Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani".

$20m sale offer for Kim Kardashian’s sex tape turned down by right owners

London: Kim Kardashian’s sex film that she made with singer Ray J five years ago is not going to the market, as Vivid Entertainment, who currently own the rights to the adult movie, has declined a 20million-dollar offer to sell it.
According to TMZ.com, an anonymous buyer was trying to buy the tape but Vivid said that they have rejected the offer because it wasn’t big enough.

“We were offered 20 million dollars for the Kim tape but have decided that we are going to hang on to it... for now,” the Daily Mail quoted Vivid boss Steve Hirsch as saying.

“Although the offer that we ultimately received was substantial, when I realised it wasn’t Kim it became less appealing.

“Kim is a superstar and if it were to be sold, it should be to her,” he added.

Earlier this year the explicit footage became public when it was leaked online.

Jonty Rhodes an inmate in `Bigg Boss 5` house?

For all those diehard fans of Jonty Rhodes, here’s a piece of good news! Buzz has it that the former South African cricketer might be one of the inmates in the house of `Bigg Boss 5`.

The flamboyant cricketer, who is still worshipped as “the finest fielder cricket has ever produced”, is currently in India and is busy touring with the Mumbai Indians’ side for the ongoing Champions League.

Talking to a daily, Jonty gave a hint and said, “I have seen the occasional episode of `Big Boss`, and have also seen `Big Brother`, in different countries around the world. Would love to try my hands at the Indian version of the show, though.”

The former SA player, however, refrained from divulging any details about his probable stint in `Bigg Boss 5`, but said, “I have been coming back to India on regular occasions since 1993, and have not been able to learn much Hindi; how to do Yoga; dance or cook some of the delicious Indian dishes, so I hope being on the show will put me in an environment where I am able to cover a few of those skills!”

When asked about his knowledge of Hindi, Jonty was prompt enough to give a smart response. He said, “I obviously don`t possess the same assets as Pamela Anderson, but she seemed to do okay! Anyways the universal language of cricket should see me through!”

Rhodes has commitments with cricket until mid-October, so the duration of his appearance in `Bigg Boss 5` has not yet been decided.

"I have cricket coaching commitments until mid-October, so am not sure when they would be able to slot me in to the show,” he said.

Boxing legend Mike Tyson in Bigg Boss 5

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson has reportedly been finalized as a participant in the Indian version of Big Brother.

The programme, known as Bigg Boss, starts in October, and will be hosted by Bollywood stars Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt, reports the BBC.

Last season, former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson made a special appearance in the Bigg Boss house and proved a ratings booster for the show.

The late reality TV star Jade Goody appeared in Bigg Boss in 2008.

Goody died in March 2009 after a high-profile battle with cervical cancer; she learned she had the condition while on the show.

There were rumours that that the boxer would feature in the celebrity-line up during this season's Big Brother in UK, which has moved to its new home on Channel 5.

Tyson is no newcomer to India - in 2007, he made his Bollywood debut, starring in a music video for a Hindi film called Fool-n-Final, a comedy centred on a bunch of criminals.

Madhuri Dixit approached for Bigg Boss 5

After Madhuri Dixit decided to relocate to India, Bigg Boss makers have decided to make the most of this opportunity by inviting her to be a part of season 5 being hosted by Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt.

Madhuri has apparently been approached by Endemol and Colors for the show and is reportedly being offered a huge amount for a special appearance in the House.

Other celebrity guests on the show include boxer Mike Tyson and actor Babara Mori. Charles Shobhraj's wife Nihita Biswas, 22, has also confirmed her presence on Colors' controversial reality show.

"Madhuri will be paid equivalent to international boxer Mike Tyson while actor Babara Mori's remuneration is still being worked out," a source told Daily Bhaskar.

The show is set to go on air in October.

Approached for two Bollywood films: Paris Hilton

Hollywood celebrity Paris Hilton claims to have received two Bollywood offers and says she is open to working in the Hindi film industry, provided she gets suitable scripts.

"I have been approached to do two Bollywood films. But I am not keen on them. However, if a good script comes up, I am willing to do it. Bollywood films are beautiful, I love the clothes in them," said the blonde beauty who arrived here early Saturday morning.

Hilton will get a taste of Bollywood at a party organised by Indian socialite Queenie Dhody. Expected guests at the Saturday night party include Bollywood celebrities Sonakshi Sinha, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Abhay Deol, Arjun Rampal, Dino Morea and Imran Khan.

The socialite has come here to launch her line of bags, but there's a lot more on her mind during her short trip.

"I am right now here for business. I wanted to do much more but there's no time during this trip," said Hilton, who unveiled the collection at a media gathering here.

However, she does not want to miss taking back "good memories" along with "Indian saris, bindis and jewellery".

A yoga enthusiast, Hilton sported a sari for the cover shoot of an Indian fashion magazine recently, and says she adored the six-yard wonder.

"I am very inspired by Indian designers. I recently shot for the cover of Marie Claire India in a sari designed by Rocky S. He is an incredible designer. I am sure I am going to wear a sari back in the US as well," she said.

'Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgn get along well'

David Dhawan on casting Dutt and Devgn together in his next!

You have repeatedly said that Rascals will remind us of Govinda-David Dhawan combination of the 90's. What change do you notice between then and now in handling the genre of comedy?
Earlier, in the 90's when I made comedies with Govinda, it was a rare genre. Audience was more into emotional dramas and film makers were not very confident about making comedies. They were scared. But today the scenario is different. Comedies are not necessarily small budget films. Audience is also lapping it up, there are many film makers taking that genre seriously and so are the actors. These days many A-grade stars are doing comedies. And if we bring in emotion along with comedy it works wonders.

Why did you decide to cast Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn?
I have directed Sanjay in many films. And then, Sanjay and Ajay get along very well, they are very good friends off-screen. I think it is the best combination. As a pair they are super. When doing a comedy, it is very important that two people are good friends, it becomes easier for a director while shooting. And one very special thing about them is that both of them are very secure actors. Otherwise actors feel very insecure and worried about what clothes the other has got, whether they have got a better line, dialogues, etc. Sanjay and Ajay are my obedient students. They would never worry about these little things.

But you must be missing those days when you had the monopoly of making some wonderful comedies with Govinda who cannot be beaten in this genre because of his unmatched comic timing..
This film will remind you of Govinda and my combination. But yes, I certainly miss those days. I used to have a great time working with him and we would make films at very short intervals. Govinda will always be remembered for his great talent and comic timing, nobody can take that away from him. We have done lot of work together and he can still do it. But then I want to work with everybody, not just Govinda.

Katrina kaif sizzles in bikini in Dhoom 3

The suspense is over. Katrina Kaif has finally agreed to star in Yash Raj Films' Dhoom 3 opposite Aamir Khan.

The big question that this confirmation throws up is, will cool Kat go ahead with wearing a bikini in the film.
For those who came in late, Katrina was always the first choice for the role. However, a precondition for doing the role was that Katrina would have to wear a two-piece in a couple of scenes in the film.

The superstar actress, despite being eager to work in the film, was reluctant to sport a bikini. While confirming Katrina's acceptance of the role, the makers of Dhoom 3 did not, however, mention whether she will wear a two- piece in the film.

Earlier, when Katrina was hesitating to do the role, the makers tried scouting for a fresh face.

"We were unable to find the perfect debutante to play the lead role after almost a year of searching. Briefly, we also tried roping in an international actress but were still unable to find someone who would stand out," Vijay Krishna Acharya, director of the film, said . "Both (YRF head honcho) Aditya Chopra and I really wanted to be sure that the actress we chose is perfect for the role. Katrina was an obvious choice for all of us. She is someone who we all know will bring tremendous enthusiasm and commitment to the film. This is also the first time Aamir and Katrina will unite on the screen. That certainly adds value to the project," Vijay said. Barring her debut film Boom , Katrina has refrained from wearing a bikini in her career so far.

In fact in her eight-year career, she has largely avoided excessive skin show. The actress, regarded as the most saleable female star by many, has been following the norm of avoiding bold scenes ever since she started dating Salman Khan.

Katrina was recently seen kissing Hrithik Roshan in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara , but that scene was filmed during the phase when she and Salman had briefly broken up.

The buzz on Dhoom 3 suggests Katrina would not only have to sport a bikini, she may also have to share a passionate smooch with Aamir. The Dhoom films have always had scenes that require the heroines to expose in beachwear and also do intimate scenes.

In the first film, Esha Deol got a hot makeover and was seen flaunting a toned body in a bikini. In Dhoom 2, Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan sported two-piece beachwear and also shared a kissing scene with Hrithik Roshan.
Thursday's decision to go with Katrina for Dhoom 3 was taken after a lot of discussion and several meetings between Aditya Chopra and Vijay Krishna Acharya.

Meanwhile it seems Katrina has become YRF's new muse.

Her latest YRF production, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan , is already a big hit. The film has grossed Rs 50 crore in less than two weeks. She has two other YRF productions lined up - Ek Tha Tiger opposite Salman and Yash Chopra's comeback directorial feature opposite Shah Rukh Khan.

Mallika Sherawat: The Phantom of the Opera?

B-town’s Jalebi Bai, aka, Mallika Sherawat is all set to go back to her ramp days and this time she may scare some with the 'Phantom of the Opera' look.

Former Indian model is gracing the world of catwalk yet again, but this time fully covered up as an Indian bride.

Surprised? Here’s what industry insiders told us, ‘
The show is titled 'The phantom of the Opera’ and Designer Anjalee and Arjun Kapoor will have Mallika Sherawat as their showstopper at the Aamby Valley India Bridal Week. Mallika will wear an outfit with gemstone in the colours of love and romance with a blend of the authentic Mughal era with sophisticated Victorian sensibility.’

So we're thinking Mallika's outfit could be scary or elegant, it's all up to the designers! Let’s hope Mallika practices her sophisticated look beforehand and doesn’t create another fashion disaster like she normally does at red carpet events.

Buzz also has it that Ms. Sherawat is one of the highest paid celebrities to walk as a showstopper. Is that fair? Probably not but have you seen her rocking body?

Is this bold actress, who once claimed that she could do a ‘Yeh Mera Dil’ song better than Kareena Kapoor, is worth watching on the ramp?

Mallika Sherawat on the ramp

Designer duo Anjalee and Arjun Kapoor opened the Aamby Valley India Bridal Week 2011 at Hotel Sahara Star, Mumbai, with a dazzling Phantom Couture collection.

Inspired by the Victorian era and the drama of Mughal times, the designers wove together glamour, grandeur and colour into their ball gowns and ethnic wear.

For the finale, Anjalee and Arjun had the sexy Mallika Sherawat walk as the showstopper in a jewelled bustier and a bright carrot red panelled lehenga. Mallika said, "What I like about Anjalee and Arjun Kapoor's fashion sensibility is that they are unafraid to experiment. It's exciting to wear a bridal outfit with a twist. I love the romantic look of the lotus concept lehenga. It makes a style statement for any trousseau and signifies luxury for the new age bride."

Jewel tones of ruby, sapphire, emerald and topaz peppered this collection of moulded blouses and fluid voluminous skirts. Delicate lace trimmings edged the creations to highlight the silhouettes. Precious stones like crystals, emeralds, rubies, turquoise and aquamarine glittered on every garment. Menswear consisted of black and white sections with churidars, sherwanis and Jodhpur jackets embellished with gleaming silk and brocades with tonal crystals on the cuffs, shoulders and garments.

For brides and grooms who want to make their D-day a memorable one, the Phantom Couture collection by Anjalee and Arjun Kapoor will be the perfect offering.

Ra.One challenges Shah Rukh Khan, the star

On a summer day in 2006, Shah Rukh Khan and director Anubhav Sinha are driving around Los Angeles.

Among other things, they are discussing a sweet and simple father-son story, but with a twist. Suddenly, SRK breaks into a smile. "That's it! I can see it! The film is done, ready for release!" Sinha looks at him incredulously. SRK continues, a mad glint in his eyes, "Not only has it been released, picture superhit hai!"

Five years on, that story is one of the most ambitious, expensive and perhaps technologically complex Hindi films ever. And the success of producer-actor SRK's Ra.One is a national debate.

"It is an enormous challenge for Shah Rukh." says Karan Johar, perhaps SRK's closest friend. "Not as an actor - because he has always pushed that envelope - but as a producer. Most importantly, it challenges Shah Rukh Khan, the star."

How big is the film, really?
Ra.One has taken in at least Rs 150 crore in making (excluding promotions), though no one - neither SRK's Red Chillies nor Eros - are willing to validate the numbers. Its nearest contender is Rajinikant's Robot, which was made on a similar budget.

Ra.One's crew has some 5,000 members, says director Sinha; from India, Italy and the US. The Director of Photography is Nicola Pecorini of Loathing in Las Vegas fame. The film is edited by Academy-award winner Martin Walsh ( Chicago).

The film was shot in Goa, London and Mumbai in three phases. Early this year, SRK decided to convert the film into 3D, pushing up the budget.

Resul Pookutty was roped in to enhance the sound effects, and SRK took it upon himself to upgrade the sound system in select multiplexes across India. In an earlier interview to Mirror, Pookutty explained, "You see, RA.One is not just a movie experience... It requires a very unconventional sound and visual quality for which we're installing the required equipment."

The marketing budget for the film is said to be Rs 40 crore, which includes Rs 15 crore for online promotions - both said to be firsts for Indian cinema. Rs 14 crore has reportedly been earmarked for promotion on news channels a fortnight before release.

African-American R&B star Akon's Chammak Challo in its six variations has been sitting pretty on the charts. In Delhi, Formula One icon Michael Schumacher will drive, a car bearing the film's logo. Global pop phenomenon Lady Gaga may endorse the film at an after party hosted by SRK's co-star Arjun Rampal.

And, there is also Rajinikant playing Rajnikant in a cameo. Mind it.

It's my film, make it large
So how did the father-son story turn into what Johar says can "rewrite the textbook of computer graphics in Indian cinema"? At what point did the film start to challenge Shah Rukh Khan, the star?

Director Sinha says the biggest challenge was that he had no readymade comic-book superhero in G.One, SRK's character. So, says Sinha, he and SRK spent months going through video clips, digital art portals and comic books. "SRK was very clued into this world," says Sinha. "I picked up a lot of things in the process."

It soon became apparent, says the director, that the battle between G.One and superbaddie Ra.One deserved epic treatment. The budget was revised; post-production became the focus. In the ensuing months, Sinha says he "remained underground", immersed in the VFX studio "only to emerge occasionally and panic".

SRK, meanwhile, was managing Kolkata Knight Riders, getting booed at D Y Patil, battling a bad knee problem, getting less than glowing certificates from old friends, and embroiled in a stand-off with a political party over his Twitter remarks.

In between trickled reports of Ra.One's 'borrowed' ideas, 'runaway' budget, post-production 'niggles' and box-office crystal-gazing.

There was something else too. Dabanng, Ready and Bodyguard, made on fractions of Ra.One's budget, had smashed box-office records. The Badshah was no longer up against himself, he was also up against his fiercest rival.

"Post Dabanng, Singham, Bodyguard, that have marked a return of the action hero, there is a lot of pressure on SRK to deliver," says trade expert Amod Mehra. "While Ra.One's music is doing great, and the promos look very promising, there could be an issue with the young audience responding to a 40-plus actor as a superhero."

Mehra is quick to add that Ra.One will comfortably recover its costs in the opening weekend. But that doesn't matter in no-losses-anymore Bollywood. Ra.One is more about brand Shah Rukh Khan.

Riding on brand SRK
Sinha, the Dhoom man who faces his biggest test as director with Ra.One, is worried. "There have been some serious investments in the film," he says. "I want all the investors to make good on what they have put in."

Three days before the film's music launch, he nervously asked T Series's Bhushan Kumar, "Music chalegi na?" There was a pause on the other end of the line, before Kumar, who has bought the music rights for a reported Rs 15 crore, replied: "Are you crazy? This is a Shah Rukh Khan film, it is bound to work!"

Kumar admits that he is banking on brand SRK. "While Akon is a huge international star, for our market, he is just a value add," says the music moghul.

Celeb management company Madison Mates's CEO Darshana Bhalla is busy stitching up endorsement and marketing deals. "You cannot spend Rs 150 crore if you are not sure of your product," Bhalla says. "This man understands his market. He knows women love it when he opens his arms, and if he is trying out a different genre, he knows what he is doing. We are banking on SRK."

For Eros International, the film's distributors, math is simple. "Contrary to market buzz, the film is reasonably budgeted and it has immense monetisation potential," says CFO Kamal Jain. "Some 40 to 80 per cent of the cost will be recovered from the pre-licensed content - distributed across platforms such as cable, digital, home theatre, etc - before the film hits the theatre."

But the box office matters, he admits: "It is important for Ra.One to do well for us to pull up the top line margins. After all, it is one of the most prestigious films in our stable. This is the first true superhero film; it stands on an Indian core - good songs, humour, family drama. It is an out and out commercial product. No one other than SRK can carry this off."

SRK to the challenge
The man at the epicentre of expectation is pulling out all the stops. SRK's calendar is choc-a-bloc with appearances, launches, events. "There are FMCG brands, consumer electronics, media, all keen to be a part of the film," says Bhalla. It helps, of course, that SRK is the face of several such products already.

Ra.One's music launch was streamed live on a video-sharing site for an undisclosed amount. The star-studded music launch's telecast rights were sold to a TV channel for a reported Rs 10 crore. Satellite rights have reportedly been sold for Rs 35 crore. Distribution rights are said to have been sold for Rs 77 crore. An electronics giant has bought a Ra.One game for Rs 5 crore.

Cast away doubts about youngsters and a 40-plus superhero. The film will be an SRK affair.

"Without giving away too much of the film, I can tell you that it has everything - song, dance, romance and love well integrated with the technology," says Johar, who once quipped on TV that he knew if he could show SRK crying he had a superhit film.

Bhalla echoes Johar: "It is a commercial film, with a very strong emotional quotient. He is still the saviour, the protector women fall in love with."

That could also be a good thing for the NRI market, where SRK stands taller than his films. Even then, industry voices say brand SRK may not have the same negotiating power for Ra.One as compared to his other release, Don2.

"Don2 is a proven franchise," says a marketing veteran who was involved with two high-end brand tie-ins for both the SRK films. "One is willing to pay three times more for an in-film placement on Don2 than Ra.One, because there is a certain kind of scepticism around the [desi sci-fi] genre. Ra.One's destiny will be decided in exactly two days. The idea is to encash the pre-release buzz, get your money's worth as an investor before the audience gets to the theatre."

Pressure on SRK?
Sinha maintains his producer-actor has rarely showed the pressure on the sets. "He was always smiling, full of energy and extremely patient," he says, adding, "The only time one saw him crumble was when his close friend Bobby Chawla slipped into coma."

SRK's tweets, however, imply a mind possessed by an idea - "music sitting...sound sitting & baby sitting. so much sitting & my feet r killing me. been woken up by kids before i could sleep."

"@nittmish its a big responsibility... to bring new technology and new genre in bollywood. kuch naya nahi kiya ton kya kiya?kya jiya"

"so tired can't even hit the bed...cant hit anything. i feel a farishta (angel) watches over my source of energy & resilience. Thanx Allah."

"overworked. overeaten.overunderslept.overquestioned. over & out time. will try & sleep. hope it rains tomorrow to wash away remains of today."

SRK's friends say he thrives in chaos. "It has been his dream to make this kind of a film," says Johar. "And he loves this frenetic pace, he thrives in this kind of pressure. If everything was organised and peaceful, he would not be able to function."

It is a tough thing to do. And no one quite knows what is going on inside his head at the moment."
