The Amazing Spider-Man swoops on UK box office

The Amazing Spider-Man has topped the UK and Ireland box office, taking £11 million in its opening weekend.

A reboot of the popular comic book franchise, it managed to out-perform the 2002 Spider-Man film which took £8.9m when it opened in June 2002.

Yet it did not outrank Marvel Avengers Assemble, whose £15.7m debut remains this year's largest first weekend haul.

Sony's latest pass at the story, which stars Britain's Andrew Garfield, was boosted by takings from 3D screenings.

It also benefited from early preview screenings, which accounted for £4.33m of its box office tally. 

The 2002 Spider-Man had no previews and also had to compete with England and Ireland World Cup matches in its opening weekend.

There was a new entry in this week's Top 10 for Katy Perry's concert documentary Part of Me, which reached fourth place with takings of £449,491.

Bollywood comedy Bol Bachchan claimed eighth place with a £160,941 haul, despite screening in just 50 cinemas.

Animated sequel Ice Age: Continental Drift dropped one place to this week's number two, taking £719,679 in its second weekend in cinemas.

Jason Segel and Emily Blunt's comedy drama The Five-Year Engagement was at number three, while Men In Black 3 held on to the number five spot after seven weeks in cinemas.

The most successful film in the chart is Ridley Scott's space opera Prometheus, which remains in sixth place.

Starring Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender, the movie has now taken a total of £23.9m in the UK and Ireland.

Salman 'Tiger' Khan heading to Pakistan

Mumbai: Good news for all Salman Khan fans in Pakistan. Following the ban on his film ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ promo in Pakistan, the actor has expressed his desire to visit the country. He will be accompanied by the film’s director, Kabir Khan.

A letter issued by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority to all satellite TV channels and cable networks last week, states that ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, set for world release on August 15, is "reportedly based on the activities of ISI and RAW". The board feels that the film is anti ISI.

When asked about his trip to Pakistan, Kabir Khan said to a daily,” Neither Salman nor I have ever visited Pakistan. So why not? We are willing to do anything that`s required to make Pakistanis believe that our project is not against them. I don`t think the trailer being banned is a big deal. Once the film releases, the truth will be out."

In fact the filmmaker took to Twitter on Tuesday to clarify that ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ does not show Pakistan in a bad light. “I will say it once more... ?#EkThaTiger? is NOT anti Pakistan...(sic)” the director tweeted.

“This is the price we have to pay because unfortunately our industry has made insensitive and jingoistic films in the past... I am absolutely sure that once the censor board of Pakistan sees ?#EkThaTiger?... they will be more than happy to show the film. I can assure the millions of fans of Salman in Pakistan that ?#EkThaTiger? will release in theatres in their country. In this day and age... its stupid to make films that are insensitive or derogatory to any country or community...(sic)” Kabir added.

Salman Khan changes Priyanka's role in Zanjeer remake

Salman is no longer just the spin-doctor on his own projects. Known to be a very active and dominant force behind his projects, Salman has now taken charge of Ramcharan 's Bollywood debut.

Recently, Salman had a meeting at his residence with Ramcharan and the Zanjeer director Apoorva Lakhia where he suggested some radical changes in the Zanjeer Remake, including the way Priyanka Chopra's character was to be packaged and portrayed.

That Salman has taken Ramcharan under his wings is no longer a secret. But here's something that would serve as an eye opener as to how much Salman is investing into his new protégé from Hyderabad.

Last week, he invited Ramcharan and Zanjeer director Apoorva Lakhia to a very private dinner at his residence in Bandra to discuss ways to reinvent and contemporize Zanjeer. Salman whose father Salim Khan co-wrote the original Zanjeer, gave Ramcharan and Lakhia tips that are now being incorporated into the film.

Says a source close to the project, "Salman called Ramcharan and Apu home to discuss Zanjeer. He then began to astutely compare the new and old Zanjeer. The first suggestion that he made was to incorporate songs for Ramcharan's character. In the original, Inspector Vijay Khanna as played by Amitabh Bachchan was too serious a man to sing and dance. Salman wants that to change. He said to Ramcharan, 'You're one of the best dancers in Indian cinema. It would be silly to not have you sing and dance."

More importantly Salman made many important suggestions about Priyanka Chopra's character including how to bring in a much larger glamour quotient character.

Says a source, "Salman feels Priyanka's character can be a lot more attractive. He has suggested changes in her clothes, styling, songs and choreography. Since Priyanka doesn't start shooting for Zanjeer until October her character is being revamped as per Salman's suggestions."

Clearly then, Salman has never taken such a keen interest in any young actor's debut. Is it because Zanjeer was co-written by his father?

"Partly that. But it's more because of how protective he feels towards Ramcharan. The young Telugu superstar and his father the iconic Chiranjeevi are very dear to Salman. Salman feels Ramcharan's future in Bollywood is a personal resoponsibility," says a source very close to the neo-Zanjeer.

Esha Marries Bharat in Lavish, Star-Studded Ceremony

In typical “band baaja baraat” style, veteran Indian actors Hema Malini and Dharmendra’s daughter Esha tied the knot June 29 with businessman Bharat Takhtani in a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony.

The Bandra-based groom came to the venue on a white horse before the couple took the marriage vows around a sacred fire.

Wearing a Kanjeevaram saree, Hema and her husband Dharmendra, looking dapper in a suit, welcomed the groom at the temple.
Esha and Bharat got married in South Indian style at the ISKCON temple in Juhu here.

Esha, too, was clad in a red and gold Kanjeevaram saree, sourced from Chennai for the wedding day by her mother, to which designer Neeta Lulla had made some changes.


The couple had been dating for quite some time and had exchanged rings Feb. 12 this year.

The wedding was the climax of three days of festivities that included a sangeet, haldi and mehndi ceremony.

Besides family members like sister Ahana and Abhay Deol, several B-town celebrities were present at the occasion including Amitabh Bachchan with son Abhishek, Manoj Kumar, Vinod Khanna, Vyjayanthimala, Ramesh Sippy, Fardeen Khan, Poonam Sinha, Madhoo, Anu Malik, and designer Neeta Lulla and her daughter Nishka.
Their reception took place June 30 at the five-star Hotel Lalit drew still more personalities from the film and political worlds.


Deol siblings Sunny and Bobby were  conspicuous by their absence at the grand wedding reception  hosted by their half-sister Esha and her husband Bharat Takhtani at a five-star hotel here June 30. When asked about the absence of Sunny and Bobby, Esha’s father, Dharmendra, said, “It is our personal matter.”

 Dharmendra married Esha’s mother, Hema Malini, in 1980 without divorcing his first wife Prakash Kaur, the mother of Sunny and Bobby Deol.

Among the glitterati who attended the reception were  veteran actors Dilip Kumar and his wife Saira Banu, Jeetendra,  Rekha, Zeenat Aman, Salman Khan, besides Tusshar Kapoor,
Sanjay Khan, Vidya Balan, Madhuri Dixit and her husband Dr. Sriram Nene, Sushmita Sen, Tabu, Kajol, Sridevi and her  producer husband Boney Kapoor.
Actors Fardeen Khan, Anupam Kher with wife Kirron,  Shamita Shetty, Mandira Bedi and business tycoon Subrata Roy  also graced the occasion.  Politicians of all hues including L.K. Advani, Sushma  Swaraj, Chaggan Bhujbal, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Narayan Rane,  Amar Singh, Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray attended the

Katrina is my idol, says Bollywood debutant Saudi Arabian Wardah Khan

Dubai, July 11 (ANI): Bollywood's new face Wardah Khan, a British model of Saudi Arabian origin, has admitted that Katrina Kaif inspired her to come to the Hindi film Industry.

The UK-bred model, 24, recently signed her first film, 'Marksheet', featuring newbies Imran Zahid and Zoa Morani.

The film is set against the backdrop of the murky business of fake marksheets and educational certificates.

She plays a bold, sexy woman who returns to India from New York, only to fall in love.

"When I was modelling, it was all about beauty. But Bollywood is so fascinating because you need to think as well. It's not about beauty but you needs brains too," Gulf News quoted Khan as saying.

"It was a struggle to be in Mumbai and hunt for roles. But I am happy that it's paid off," said Khan, who grew up watching Bollywood musicals.

She considers UK-bred Bollywood A-lister Katrina Kaif as her role model.

"Katrina is an inspiration to so many girls like us. She works hard. I salute her," said Khan.

Khan, born to a Kashmiri mother and a Saudi fathe, said that she's happy to shrug off of her background to try her luck in the movies.

"I go to Saudi every three years. It's my home country. But this offer was too good to be true and I have my dad's full support," added Khan. (ANI)

Motherhood Is Bliss: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who gave birth to her first child, Aaradhya, last November, said recently motherhood is her top priority, and she has no immediate plans to return to the celluloid world.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was spotted at Mumbai airport June 25 on her way back from London. She says she is in no rush to get back to work.

Making one of her rare appearances post-pregnancy at the 25th anniversary celebration of Britain’s MP of Indian origin, Keith Vaz, Rai Bachchan said, “Being a mum, I love it. It is like bliss.”

The 38-year-old former beauty queen was accompanied by husband Abhishek Bachchan to the gala dinner at the Radisson Edwardian Heathrow Hotel. 

Asked whether he shared in his wife’s motherhood responsibilities, Bachchan said, “I am guilty. I don’t spend enough time with the baby to change her nappies. She does all the hard work.”

The new mom, who was last seen on the big screen in “Guzaarish,” said she is not thinking of returning to work just yet.

“We will see how things go,” she said. “Right now, it is blissful (to be with the baby).”

Why Diana does not want to do Deepika's Cocktail's role?

Diana Penty is making her Bollywood debut with Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone starer Cocktail. The model-turned actress, who is playing Meera in the movie, says that if the director had asked her to play Deepika Padukone's role of Veronica, she would have said no.

When a website interviewed Diana Penty and asked if she was offered the role of Veronica (played by Deepika), would she be able to pull off the bikini act?

To which Diana replied, "No, I don't think I would be able to do that. I have some reservations about how far I would wish to go. I would not be comfortable doing bikini acts and intimate scenes."

Diana Penty also said, "I am not a trained actor, but it helped a lot that I could completely relate to the character of Meera that I play in Cocktail. I was amazed to see the way Saif and Deepika improvised while we were shooting the scenes. I kept wondering how they managed to do so. I would give a lot of credit for my performance to Homi, because he knew exactly what he wanted from his actors."

SRK and Salman fans battle over Ek Tha Tiger!

When clashes happen between two majestic stars, there comes a 'Divide and rule policy.' The same did happen when there was a clash of elephantine starry egos between the Bollywood's two warring actors Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan. When a historic fight broke out between the two Khans at actress Katrina Kaif's birthday party, not only did the industry biggies, but also, the fans across the world, did take sides of their favourite Khans. While a few were staunch SRK supporters, a few blindly chanted Sallu's name. And, then guess what? This led to the tinselville's two most powerful camps: Shahrukh and Salman camps.

We all know that neither Shahrukh, nor Salman, does leave any stone unturned to pounce on each other, for every minor issue. The same goes with their fans, who could dare to kill the opposite party, for the smallest of reason. In a recent incident, when Salman Khan's upcoming film Ek Tha Tiger's dynamic trailer hit the internet, that fetched applauds and appreciations, the Sallu fans, as usual, did not leave the golden chance to slam the Shahrukh fans. And, to none's surprise, the King Khan's fans too did not hesitate at all to retaliate. Hitting back hard, the Shahrukh Khan fans made several comments against Salman Khan and his film Ek Tha Tiger:

Amor: Ek Tha Tiger was offered to Shahrukh first and he refused it, because he knows it would be a mindless movie.

Dipu: All the Salman Khan lovers please don't hate SRK because he is 100 times above than Sallu, who is a murderer.

SRK: Sharukh is the king. He lights up the stage. Shahrukh rules.

Amar: Salman can never never never match up to SRK at anything!!! He is immature, spiteful and has a lot of malice. Shahrukh is a class act and that is why he s loved by billions, I repeat billions all over the world!!! He is a Producer's dream and box office King!!!

Selena Gomez Has Blue Eyes on Teen Vogue Cover?

Selena Gomez graces the cover of the September Teen Vogue fashion issue, a major coup for the budding star. But she’s pictured with blue eyes, according to a copy of the cover that has gone viral.

Gomez, 19, who’s had her share of troubles lately with boyfriend Justin Bieber, scored a major coup by landing the cover of the teen magazine.

She’s also dressed in a sexy, but not over-the-top, outfit that makes her look ravishing compared to her last Teen Vogue cover last year.


Selena wears a blue denim shirt tied up around her midriff, with the sleeves rolled up. She wears what looks like a floral-patterned bikini top underneath. Her hair looks windblown and sexy as it dances around he shoulders.

But her eyes are unmistakably blue. Her father, Ricardo Gomez, is of Mexican ancestry, and her mother, Mandy Teefey, is part Italian. Not a blue eye in the crowd.


Selena’s natural eye color is dark brown, so she’s obviously wearing blue contacts in the photo, or her eyes have been digitally altered to look blue.

On the other hand, her eyes are so dark, it could be reflected light from blue surroundings, like an ocean or lake.

Either way, it’s not a good move. It looks like she’s in denial about her heritage. Plus, what kind of message does that send to teens who are insecure about their image?

On the plus side, Selena also seems to put her relationship with Bieber in perspective. The cover line for her story contains a quote: “I’m 19. I don’t take anything too seriously in my private life.”

Seems that would include Justin. The two were hit be reports that they had broken up several times over the past few months. But the made a show of unity by going out on a very public date. They are now vacationing together in Japan.

Scarlett, 27, showed off her jaw-dropping curves as she washed herself after a dip in the water, appearing unselfconscious and very comfortable in his company.

The pair were joined briefly by a couple of crew members, but were alone for the majority of the time.

Scarlett's bodyguard appeared to be making himself useful by holding something which looked like soap while she showered- displaying an admirable work ethic.

DirecTV drop will black-out Jersey Shore, Snooki & JWoWW to 20 million viewers

Breaking News - Millions of Jersey Shore fans will no longer be able to watch their favorite MTV reality shows under a DirecTV black out that becomes effective at midnight tonight (Tuesday). DirecTV is dropping 26 Viacom channels - including MTV, MTV2 and VH1 - as part of stalled negotiations on an distribution deal. When DirecTV drops the channels it will leave 20 million viewers without access to their favorite MTV programming including Jersey Shore and the currently airing Snooki & JWoWW.

DirecTV drop to black out MTV programming

The threat that millions could be left in the dark has MTV and the Jersey Shore stars taking action. A statement blocks all MTV.com visitors from accessing the network's website today (Tuesday) until they listen to a short video about the DirecTV change. Several of the Jersey Shore stars including Mike 'The Situation' and Pauly D even took to Twitter to make fans aware of the situation. "DIRECTV is dropping MTV, that means no more Jersey Shore so call 800 531 5000 to stop them!" they both tweeted.

The major reasons behind why DirecTV is threatening to drop Viacom channels is basically over dollars and cents. The bottom line is the current distribution deal between DirecTV and Viacom expires tonight after months of negotiations. In a statement on the Viacom website it is noted that, "DirecTV provided Viacom with a counter proposal that included a lower rate than Viacom receives from any other distributor in the industry. With this offer, our negotiations have reached an impasse." DirecTV retorted on their own website saying, "'(We have) absolutely no intention of removing your favorite Viacom networks ... but unfortunately Viacom executives sent a letter to us late last night, forcing us to take these channels down by midnight tonight if we don't come to an agreement." The site goes on to say, "Viacom wants you to pay over 30 percent more to keep the channels you are already receiving costing customers $1 billion."

Pretty in pink! Kelly Brook steps out in a blush tulip dress in Italy

Kelly Brook stepped out in Italy today channelling the old school glamour of some of the country's darlings.

Wearing a blush pink tulip dress that highlighted her curves, the model teetered across the cobbles in towering black heels.

She added oversized earrings and retro sunglasses to the ensemble.

Kelly is in town for the Ischia Global Film & Music Fest, and has been topping up her tan in the Mediterranean in between attending events.

Accompanied by boyfriend Thom Evans, Kelly last night joined a host of Italian and international stars at the gala dinner at the Hotel Molino in Ischia Porto, including Trudie Styler, Sveva Alvini and Jane Alexsander.

Brook, who looked pretty in a white Rohmir dress and Coralia Leets earrings, and her boyfriend arrived in Ischia on a boat from Naples the previous afternoon.

Kate Middleton and Prince William furious over honeymoon photos leak

Kate Middleton and Prince William have reportedly been left fuming, after an Australian magazine published private pictures of their honeymoon.

It's thought monthly title Woman's Day made the controversial decision to publish the 'world exclusive' photos of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, taken on the beach during their private honeymoon in the Seychelles last May.

It's not yet known how the publication obtained the pictures, reported to show Prince William in colourful board shorts and Kate Middleton in a black bikini.

Today a St. James’ Palace spokesperson told news site Celebuzz: 'The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s honeymoon was obviously a private occasion, and we would ask people to respect their privacy.'

Prince William and Kate Middleton jetted off for some R&R at the exclusive Seychelles North Island destination in May last year, with rumours suggesting that not even Kate knew where William was whisking her away to, and that he planned the entire trip as a surprise.

On their return, the relaxed newlyweds thanked Seychelles officials for 'a memorable and special 10 days,' revealing they 'thoroughly enjoyed their time together' on the island.

It's thought several newspapers knew the fiercely guarded secret location of William and Kate's honeymoon before they jetted off, but chose to not to send photographers after the royal couple's requests for privacy.

According to reports, Kareena is so impressed by Vidya Balan's performance in The Dirty Picture that the actress too plans to do some risque scenes in Heroine.
