Katrina is horrified on Just Dance

A still from Just Dance
While everyone on the set of Star Plus dance reality show Just Dance were seen having fun. There was someone who was completely horrified.

Katrina had an extremely scary encounter when she came on the sets of Just Dance.

One of the contestants from the show, Aabhash decided to play a prank on the actress. Aabhash who had a very scary get up done for his act came quietly from behind and scared Katrina.

The scared actress took around 30 second to become normal until she broke into tears of laughter.

Well it seem only one man from Just Dance has actually managed to get a permanent mark on the actress heart.

Katrina Kaif slaps Jay Soni on TV

Katrina Kaif and Jay Soni
As a host you expect your guests to be warm and cordial, but Jay Soni (host of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa) was in for a rude shock when celebrity guest Katrina Kaif slapped him hard across his face.

Kat was accompanied by her co-actors Imran Khan and Ali Zafar on a reality show featuring kids to promote her upcoming flick. A rather starstruck Jay had his eyes set on her from the moment she came in and did not miss out on any opportunity to flirt with her and also take digs at her not-so-fluent Hindi.

At one point on stage, Jay went down on his knees and proposed to her saying "Will you marry me Kats?" That's when the actress gave him one tight slap. The host was too stunned to move while everybody on the sets burst into peals of laughter. And we hear that Jay's mystery girl wasn't present on the sets as one could have heard a thunderous sound of another slap.

Justin Bieber shows off his new iPhone: Selena Gomez can expect a call

Justin Bieber showed off his new red iPhone to the fans on Friday. Replacing his old phone that had hours of social media use and used calling people like his girlfriend Selena Gomez, the fans got a glimpse of the machine he uses to communicate with them online. After only four hours of posting online, the photo was viewed over 250,000 times as fans wanted the first look of the new machine. The fact he was shirtless when he showed off the new phone only added a sexy element to the photograph.

The photo, first posted on Twitter, had the fans wanting to know if they could get his phone number too. While they were joking, no doubt the first person he called after picking up the iPhone was his girlfriend, Selena Gomez.

What is very interesting is that Justin Bieber didn't get a purple face for his iPhone as he has always told his fans that purple was his favorite color. Going so far to order purple carpet at his movie première, the entertainer seemed obsessed with the color Red just doesn't seem to fit the image of the youngster who says Never Say Never.

Typically, if a friend gets an iPhone, it isn't a big deal, but with the Bieber fans, the first look is critical. Plus as we all know, it is the only way Justin Bieber communicates with Selena Gomez as he goes on tour in South America.

Paris Hilton’s work ethic praised; Google exec in town

One of Asia’s leading real estate firms, Century Properties, pulled out all the stops last month as it launched one of its biggest international collaborations of the year: its collaboration with Hollywood celebrity Paris Hilton for its premiere condominium development, Azure Urban Resort Residences, dahlings.

Manila was pandemonium from the day Paris Hilton landed. She came, she saw and she definitely conquered!

“Her unparalleled style, which made her a successful businesswoman and style icon, and her zest for living the good life are the qualities that we would like to incorporate into our vacation-inspired residential property,” said Century Properties chief operating officer John Victor “Jigger” R. Antonio.

Right après her arrival, Paris went straight to shoot her Azure project video and TV commercial.

Century Properties managing director Robbie Antonio said he was able to observe the celebrity’s professionalism and work ethic closely. She did not complain at all, he said, and always worked with a smile. She had no airs.

Members of the Antonio famille, led by José E.B. Antonio and wife Hilda Reyes Antonio, later joined Paris Hilton in posing for group photos with the Santorini-inspired architecture design of the new development as background.

That afternoon, Century Properties hosted a media conference for the world-renowned businesswoman at Peninsula Manila. “I am truly very proud to be a part of the Azure. It’s my very first real-estate venture and I love it,” she said.

“With her exposure to the best beaches of the rich and famous around the world, plus her fun and sensible fashion sense, we definitely made the right choice in partnering with someone who appreciates urban resort-style living,” explained Robbie Antonio.

A private dinner in Paris’ honor followed at the Pen’s Old Manila. They then went straight to the Rigodon ballroom to be introduced to Azure investors and Manila VIP’s.

She was very accommodating. She impressed everyone with her breeding.
“Everyone can expect that the new Azure campaign as well as Century Properties’ Azure Beach Club will have Paris’ indelible touch,” said Robbie Antonio.

“It’s been great and fun working with her,” Jigger Antonio said, “and we look forward to her return to Manila when we inaugurate Azure’s Beach Club.”

Valii
Watch fanatic that I am, Valii has always been one of my favorite watches; in fact, I have a couple in my watch collections, darlings. So when the invitation came for the launch of Valii’s latest eye-popping collection at Peninsula Manila’s Rigodon Ballroom, moi accepted at once.
The new fashionable timepieces live up to Valii’s heritage of elegance, luxury and style.

The collection is the brilliant brainchild of renowned jeweler Anita Chan. The brand represents, according to the press materials, “the fruition of her vision of fusing her elegant jewelry designs and the cutting-edge of today’s technology with the classic and timeless tradition of excellent Italian watchmaking.”

Bubbling like champagne, the designs stress “the importance of a product’s unique, inimitable appeal to stand out in Manila’s flourishing luxury market,” press materials said.

With their interchangeable rings and straps, Valii watches can be mixed and matched to suit any woman or man’s mood and lifestyle.

Despite the luxury tag, Valli is “well within everyone’s reach,” Chan said.

The Valii launch also marked Chan’s partnership with two long-time pals: hip, versatile fashion designer and vivacious Michele Sison, and advertising and marketing impresario Arnold Vegafria.

In fact, the launch of the collection was accompanied by a dazzling mini-fashion show by Michele, where models breezed around the ballroom flaunting the flashy, multicolor eye-catching “Gummy Scu” watches.
Valii, said Chan, is “the Mandarin’s translation for ‘elegance.’”
Check out Valii, exclusively available at Anita Chan boutique, Power Plant Mall, Rockwell, Makati. Call 8981459 or visit www.valii.eu.

In the great company of Cinderella and Google
At Masetto Resto, I got together with the royals of Cinderella Department Stores—Malou de Venecia, Therese Coronel Santos, eligible bachelor Richie Santos and Marielle Santos Po.
I was introduced to smart and witty Christine Songco-Lau, a close friend of Therese and head of developer relations for Google Southeast Asia.

She said she had been meeting with local universities, private companies and the government “to introduce Google technology and tools that developers need to build both mobile and web apps.”
“I have had several talks with local universities about Google and current technologies that are applied in their curriculum,” she added.

We all had fun. Great conversations combined with fantastic meals, prepared by chef Tippi Tambunting.

We ended the night and all agreed, “Wow, we ate too much.” But believe me, it was worth every bite—the yummy dishes and, more so, the fantastic and very interesting company, dahlings.

Golden Globes trial delayed

The much-anticpated courtroom battle between the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Dick Clark Productions over who can sell the television rights for the Golden Globe Awards has been delayed.

Opening arguments had been set for Tuesday morning at U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, but Judge Valerie Baker Fairbank has advised the HFPA lawyers that she is now unable to preside over the trial. A new judge will have to be assigned and the case rescheduled. It is expected to be at least another month before the trial starts, people from each side of the dispute said. A call to Judge Fairbank's chambers was not immediately returned.

The case was generating a lot of attention in Hollywood as several big shots were expected to have to testify, including Dick Clark himself, Dick Clark Productions Chief Executive Mark Shapiro, NBCUniversal West Coast Business Operations President Marc Graboff and CBS Chief Executive Leslie Moonves. Shapiro is also a member of the board of directors of Tribune Co., parent of the Los Angeles Times.

At issue is a new six-year deal Dick Clark Productions cut last October with NBC -- the longstanding home of the Golden Globes -- that will keep the show on the network through 2018. The price tag goes from $17 million for the January 2012 show to $26 million in 2018. NBC paid $13.3 million for the 2011 telecast.

The ink was barely dry on the new contract when the HFPA filed a suit charging that Dick Clark Productions had violated the terms of its partnership with the HFPA by not consulting with it first before renewing the NBC deal at a price “substantially below current market rate,” according to its lawsuit.
The two are arguing over whether their current agreement gave Dick Clark Productions the right to sign a renewal with NBC without consulting first with the HFPA. Dick Clark Productions had argued that its production deal with HFPA gave it that power.

HFPA countered that was not the case and that NBC got a sweetheart deal. The two have been partners on the show for almost three decades.

The HFPA has also questioned how Dick Clark Productions has handled finances for the telecast. The two split the net profit from the show.

Indian Railways gives James Bond licence to thrill

The world's most famous secret agent, James Bond (with actor Daniel Craig) will have to make some changes in his action plan in India, when he jumps from a speeding motorbike onto the roof top of a moving train and while on the run, will jump from one moving to train top to another. But the earlier plan to show both the moving train tops crowded with travellers, will have to be done away with, to comply with conditions put out by the railway ministry.

"One of the conditions for allowing the shoot is that they cannot show India or Indian Railways in bad light and the assurances will have to be given to us in writing. The film will be viewed across the world where it will seem as if all trains here have people travelling on roof tops, which is not true. Also, travelling on the roof of a train is prohibited by law and that cannot be encouraged," railway minister Dinesh Trivedi said, while confirming that the shoot will happen in Goa and in January next year.

While there are other conditions that the filmmakers have to comply to, and are likely to abide by like, keeping the "safety issue" as priority and causing "least inconvenience to passengers," Trivedi has struck a deal for allowing the railways to be used for the Bond film, tentatively titled " Bond 23". He has asked James Bond to be brand amabassador for Indian Railways, for which Trivedi also came up with punch line for a two-minute spot, where 007 will have to say something on the lines of "Indian Railways is stronger than James Bond."

Trivedi, who replied to an email that he recieved from Indian representatives of the Hollywood producers of the Bond film, after which he met them last Monday at his railway ministry office. They had asked for Sabarmati in Gujarat or Goa for a site to shoot in, since the film has to show Bond jumping into a sea or a big water body from the train top. Trivedi assured "all possible help from the railways" for the shoot as long as conditions he has mentioned were met with.

"Octopussy" was the only other Bond film which had an Indian connection, before this, when part of the film was shot in the Uadipur Lake Palace Hotel and in the streets of the city, with Roger Moore starring as the MI6 agent, in the film that was released in 1983.

Emma Watson comes of age in new Trésor Midnight Rose perfume ad

As she leaves the days of Harry Potter behind her, Emma Watson takes another step towards becoming a defining figure in the world of fashion and beauty.

Stepping from one role to another, the face of Lancôme has firmly made the new lead position hers - and has proved that she has well and truly come of age in the process.

In a new ad for Lancôme Trésor Midnight Rose perfume, the star oozes elegance and charm as she wins the affections of French actor Cyril Descours.

The playful storyline sees a refined and edgy Emma accidentally leaving her trilby hat in a Parisian book store. The helpful - and devastatingly handsome - Descours attempts to return the hat to the Mademoiselle... and the two eventually clinch - well, almost - under a night sky on the banks of the Seine.

The actress morphs between coquettish, boyish cool and evening chic in the love story, her red lips and jaunty hat a world away from her days at Hogwarts.

The award-winning 21-year-old actress follows in the footsteps of Hollywood stars Kate Winslet and Penelope Cruz who fronted advertising campaigns for the French company in the past.

At the launch of the fragrance in May, the British actress said the perfume is 'addictive, it's warm, it's playful, it's sweet, it's everything I hoped it would be.'

She has also starred in Burberry campaigns and is no stranger to front rows of some of the most high profile fashion weeks catwalks.

The ad was shot in Paris back in March, when, despite looking immaculate while the cameras were rolling, Emma chomped on chicken kebabs during the break - proving not all A-list stars deprive themselves for their size zero frames.

The former child star, who is the face of the brand, confessed she wasn't much of a fragrance connoisseur before joining the project.

She said: 'I didn't really like perfumes before because I thought they were heavy, but this one is really light and playful.

'I feel lucky to embody a fragrance I am so crazy in love with.'

Rihanna slammed by PETA for outfit

Rihanna is known for her outrageous and revealing stage outfits. But with her latest fashion choice, She has ruffled more than a few feathers.

Last week as she attended a launch for her perfume at a department store on London’s Oxford Street, the 23-year-old star wore a turquoise top by Antonio Berardi made using a large number of ostrich feathers.
The move has enraged animal rights group PETA, who claim that the feathers used to create the garment could have been collected cruelly.

‘Rihanna is flaunting stolen property, in this case feathers possibly plucked right off their rightful owners’ backs,’ PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) spokeswoman Sandra Smiley told the Daily Star.
‘She has shown little regard for foxes, cows and reptiles, now she’s adding birds to the list of species exploited for her dubious looks.’

‘Feathers are often ripped off chickens, geese, ostriches and emus in live plucking. This can result in gaping wounds that are sewn up with a needle and thread without anaesthetic,’ she said.

Controversially, Smiley referenced the domestic abuse suffered by Rihanna at the hands of her ex boyfriend Chris Brown.

‘We keep hoping that Rihanna, a victim of violence herself, will learn to open her heart and start empathising with the suffering of others,’ she said.

‘That includes the animals who are beaten, gassed, electrocuted and poisoned to be turned into fashion accessories,’ she added.

Bodyguard smashes all records

Salman Khan in the film
Everyone was forecasting " Bodyguard" to open to big box-office collections, but no one anticipated the massive response the movie ended up generating. The film, which opened on Eid on Wednesday, ran to packed houses in the country, with trade analysts predicting the collections to be in the range of `18-20 crore.

During the last couple of years, it was Salman's other big ticket release, "Dabangg" (`14.35 crore), and Aamir Khan's "3 Idiots" (`12.5 crore), which had shown the biggest openings.

Says trade analyst Taran Adarsh, "Salman is something else now. I think the movie has earned almost `20 crore on day one and over the weekend, it will cross `85-90 crore." Komal Nahta is more conservative in his estimates and pegs the weekend collection at `65-70 crore. However, Nahta says the film has broken all international records too. Says Nahta, "In Dubai, the movie opened on Tuesday because that's when Eid was celebrated. While "Dabangg" had opened with 7 lakh dirhams (`87 lakh), "Bodyguard" made 11 lakh dirhams (`1.36 crore). In London, the movie opened with a collection of 60,000 pounds (`44.4 lakh) on Tuesday, which too is unheard of. It has broken all previous records for any Bollywood film."

While analysts hail Salman and the film as a box office miracle, multiplex and single screen officials tell us that various strategies have come together to help the film. Says Tinku Singh, group president, SRS group, "In NCR, we ran 53 shows in Faridabad, and 22 and 30 shows in Gurgaon and Indirapuram. The total collection on day one was `24 lakh. It is houseful across the country. After the "Aarakshan" fiasco, everyone's rejoicing with this movie. And the thing to remember here is that the movie opened on a Wednesday, so it will have five days, plus two more weekends at least, to make a lot more money."

Also, "Boduguard" opened to weekend pricing across most multiplexes, giving them much more revenue. However, PVR Cinemas chose to go ahead with weekday pricing for Wednesday, and reported 95% occupancy in the morning shows, and 100% occupancy towards the evening. Out of 550 shows in PVR halls, approximately 325 were played in Delhi and Punjab. Says Deepa Menon, vice president, corporate communications for PVR Cinemas, "The movie saw an excellent opening in Delhi-NCR, ending the day with nearly 95% occupancy, which is quite phenomenal. This definitely is one of the biggest openings on day one that we've seen."

Even in single-screen theatres, the film has done record-breaking business in Delhi-NCR. While Vishal in Rajouri Garden reported a total of `4.5 lakh in four shows, all four shows were houseful in Delite, said Sunil Parashar, media coordinator for Dellite. Sheila Cinema in Paharganj too, saw four full shows, totalling a collection of over `3 lakh. Says Parashar, "During "Ready", ticket prices had been increased by 20% even in single-screen halls. But for "Bodyguard", even at normal single-screen prices, the movie has broken all records. Most single screens are houseful till Sunday."

Bodyguard has universal appeal: Siddique

Siddique directing Salman Khan for a scene
'Bodyguard' has already been made in Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi languages and is now being made in Telugu, Kannada and even Bengali.

Bodyguard
- one film, six languages. Writer Siddique who has directed the film in three languages - Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi says the reason is the story's universal appeal. Irrespective of the language, Indian emotion remain the same says the popular South filmmaker who makes his Hindi film debut with the Salman Khan starrer. While the film is already minting money, Siddique reveals its success mantra in an exclusive conversation with Gaurav Malani .

Many of your Malayalam films have already been remade in Hindi from '
Hera Pheri ' to ' Hulchul '. Didn't you ever think of making a Hindi film before?
I was getting several offers from Bollywood but I never accepted them because I was comfortable making Malayalam and Tamil films. But then I realized one day, why am I not doing Hindi films?

So how did your Hindi directorial debut happen?

I have a friend in Mumbai called Nirupa who always insisted that with the kind of films I make, I should be directing a Bollywood film. When I was making
Bodyguard in Malayalam, I thought this is an ideal film for Bollywood and especially with Salman Khan in the title role. I promised myself that if I get Salman Khan for the role, I will direct it in Hindi.

Fortunately Nirupa is a good friend of Salman Khan's sister Alvira. She got Atul Agnihotri and Alvira to come from Mumbai and watch the original film and they loved it. Salman came the same day to watch the film and immediately after the screening he said, I am doing the film. That is Salman Khan - once he likes something, he doesn't need any more discussion. It was literally what you call a 'dream-come-true' moment.

How comfortable were you making a Hindi film?

I cannot read or write Hindi but I can manage to speak in Hindi. Directors in South take classes for the language but I never had to get into that. Also though the dialogues of
Bodyguard are translated in Hindi, the content of the dialogue is mine.

Do you find any difference in the working styles of the Hindi and South film industry?

While the basic functioning is same, there is one major difference here. In South we start our shoot sharp at 7 am. That never happens in Bollywood. We always start late here.

So is Bollywood comparatively less professional?

Not really (laughs). Once the stars reach sets, they work very hard and ensure that they finish the scene before leaving, no matter what.

Bodyguard has already been made in Malayalam and Tamil....

Not just that... now the film is being remade by other directors in Telugu, Kannada and even Bengali language. The story has a universal appeal. That's the beauty of our country - irrespective of the language; the Indian emotion remains the same.

But doesn't it get monotonous to direct the same story repeatedly?

It is actually boring to direct the same story again and again. But my thrill comes from bringing some difference and freshness each time. Once you are able to achieve that, you forget the monotony.

So how different have you made the Hindi version from the original?

The content is the same but the way of telling the story is different. The major difference is the characterization of the hero. In Malayalam and Tamil versions, the hero was a college dropout who becomes a bodyguard. In Hindi version he is a professional bodyguard. Other than that, in Malayalam the treatment was more comical, in Tamil it was more romantic but in Hindi we have tried to tap the macho side of Salman Khan.

Is Salman Khan better than Vijay and Dileep in the earlier versions?

Salman can't do what Vijay has done in
Kaavalan and vice versa. Also, what Vijay has done in Tamil will not suit Salman in Hindi or Dileep in Malayalam versions. Likewise, what Salman has done in Hindi will not suit Vijay in Tamil or Dileep in Malayalam versions.

Is Kareena better than Asin and Nayanthara in the earlier versions?

In terms of the female lead, they are three very different personalities with different style of acting. Since Kareena had already seen the Malayalam and Tamil versions, it was a challenge for her to portray the same character in a different way. She comes from an acting background where she doesn't need any rehearsals. If you see all the three films, you can definitely understand the difference between them.

Has the Hindi film turned out to be the best amongst the three?

Certainly the Hindi version has a bigger budget and larger canvas so it is a visual feast. But the Malayalam film has its own beauty and so does the Tamil. So there cannot be any comparisons as such.

What next? More Hindi films or South cinema?

I have commitments in Malayalam and Tamil cinema. But if I get a good offer in Hindi, I shall surely consider it.

'Salman Khan refuses to believe Bodyguard's success'

Salman Khan is recovering after an eight-hour surgery in Pittsburgh and refuses to believe that his " Bodyguard" has broken box-office records, says his brother-in-law and co-producer Atul Agnihotri.

Salman, who underwent surgery for a nerve problem that was causing exruciating pain in his head, jaws and cheeks, believes his family is just trying to cheer him up by telling him that "Bodyguard" is rocking the box office.

"He is not totally convinced. He is thinking that we are saying this to cheer him up. This is because he is totally cut off from his regular sources. If he had been in Mumbai, he would have had more interaction, seen more TV and read editorials. There he is totally depending on what we are saying," Atul, who co-produced the film with Reliance, told IANS in an interview. "Bodyguard", which released on Eid Wednesday, has surpassed the opening day box-office collection of "Dabangg" (Rs.14.5 crore) and " 3 Idiots" (Rs.13 crore) by garnering Rs.22 crore in the domestic market.

Salman, 45, is expected to be home in 10 days. He is currently under observation, said Atul. ?First, they did some test on him and then he was subjected to the first medical procedure. The surgery went for eight hours. Now he is under three-day observation. I think tomorrow night (Saturday) or day after (Sunday) morning they will review and go for the next step. He will be there for a week or 10 days more," he said.

Atul is riding high on the unprecedented success of the Salman-Kareena Kapoor starrer action-drama, which has received overwhelming response from the audiences despite bad reviews. "We were expecting a good opening but the number has gone beyond our prediction. For us, before the release (of 'Bodyguard'), 'Dabangg' was the benchmark. That we have surpassed, which is a great thing," he said.

The film is scoring high even in south despite being a Hindi remake of Malayalam film of the same name. It was also made in Tamil. "Even in Cochin where people have seen both its Tamil and Malayalam version, the film is doing extremely well. Till yesterday (Thursday) we had two theatres, today (Friday) we have opened up third screen so that?s an indicator of the reaction of the audience in south," said the 41-year-old actor-director-producer.

Atul is expecting the box office collection to touch Rs.85 crore by this weekend. "As 31st was a holiday, we did a business of around Rs 21.57 crore, then yesterday (Thursday) we have touched about Rs.19 crore again. In that sense we have already done around Rs.41 crore and above, across India. Today is a Friday. In three days (including weekends) there is a possibility that we would cross Rs.80 to Rs.85 crore in India," said Atul.

Abhishek Bachchan to miss Messi

Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan who is busy shooting for his next movie " Bol Bachchan" in Jaipur, had all plans to attend the friendly match being played by Messi in Kolkata.

However, he reportedly won't be able to do so. According to sources, "Abhishek is crazy about football and is a huge Chelsea fan. He never misses watching any football matches. Unfortunately, even though he was keen to be a part of the mega sporting event happening in Kolkata, he can't make it due to his busy shooting schedule."

Paisa vasool: 'Bodyguard' Salman wows box office home & abroad

Salman Khan
He is Bollywood's biggest paisa vasool star today. That's what theatre-owner Rachit Malhotra thinks of Salman Khan. Malhotra owns Agra's Jwala cinema, a single-screen theatre with an abundant 1,139 seats. Yet on Wednesday (Eid) and Thursday, they weren't enough to accommodate the frenzied fans who queued outside for a ticket. Every show of Bodyguard, Salman's latest release, was houseful.

"For the audience, Salman is the film. Everything else is secondary. They aren't just whistling when he bares his chest. They are even dancing outside the hall. They know a Sallu bhai movie is always tension-free, with entertainment guaranteed," says Malhotra.

It's a similar tale in each of the four single-screen theatres and the three multiplexes in the city of the Taj. "Combined, there are about 60 shows of Bodyguard every day in Agra. Most are houseful. That's staggering," he says.

The success story is being replicated across India, even abroad. Trade expert Komal Nahta says the film raked in a record-breaking 11 lakh dirham (about Rs 1.36 crore) on Tuesday, the opening day in Dubai. Even in UK, the first-day collection of £60,000 (about Rs 44 lakh) was equally impressive.

"The movie could cross Rs 85 crore in the first nine days. Overall, it could end up netting around Rs 125 crore," says Nahta, editor, Film Information. Bodyguard's box-office figures - his third major recent hit along with Dabangg (2010) and Ready (2011) - might bring a smile on the lips of India's most famous bachelor. Smiling won't be easy though. Salman has trigeminal neuralgia, a condition that causes acute pain in the jaw. He is currently undergoing treatment in the US.

Like Bodyguard, Dabangg and Wanted (2009) were also released during Eid. "He has a huge following among the Muslim youth. With an Eid release he is able to capitalize on it," says Nahta. That's correct but not the full truth. The 45-year-old actor is equally popular among urban lower-middle class youth and the underclass across communities.

Social scientist Shiv Viswanathan believes the secret of Salman's popularity lies in his ability to combine machismo and irreverence, innocence and mischievousness. "He combines opposites effortlessly," he says.

Distributor Sanjay Mehta puts the second surge in the star's popularity in perspective. In the past 10 years, Bollywood was dominated by feel-good family dramas, love stories and naughty comedies. "Salman was the first to spot the shortage of action films. and its possible demand. With Wanted and Dabangg, he reinvented himself as an all-action hero who also delivers one-liners, makes people laugh. With a few changes, Bodyguard continues in the same vein," he says.

Salman's bulging biceps in Veergati (1995) spurred the 'bodybuilding' craze in small town India. Almost two decades later, he continues to be every neighbourhood gym's No. 1 poster boy. Yet, his major early hits were either romantic comedies or emotional dramas: Maine Pyaar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam .

The actor's reinvention as an action star became possible after the regular men of muscle -- Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt, Ajay Devgun and Akshay Kumar -- recast themselves as funny-face comics and uneasy romantics. The new Salman filled that gap. True, he was always at home in action flicks (Garv, 2003). But with Wanted and Dabangg, he repositioned himself as Bollywood's top action man.

Viswanathan says that part of Salman's charm lies in the fact that he makes no claims of being an intellectual. "He is just normal and healthy, a child of nature, the boy next door. And he is sheer entertainment. He is non-problematic intellectually. And that works in an age where everybody seems to be into problem solving," he says. Mehta says that Salman's rebellious streak has also endeared him to the masses. "They find him more human," he says.

In recent years, the actor has matured in real life. Salman doesn't make headlines any more for allegedly shooting black bucks or breaking glass panes of his girlfriend's home or reportedly driving over people sleeping on the pavement. Now he makes news primarily for breaking box-office records, for being able to figure out the people's pulse unerringly. Time and again. There is something about Salman Khan.
