I'm not playing a bisexual: Koena Mitra

She is sultry, often scantily clad and knows how to supply an endless stream of bytes in the 24*7 news cycle. From the eighth tattoo on her back, gossip about plastic surgeries and the MMS stories churned out by her PR machinery, Koena Mitra, the Bengali bombshell is a perfect example of courting the limelight through her sexual persona.

But Koena, who made her Bollywood debut with an item number in Ram Gopal Varma's film Road, is shunning the raunch factor that made her a star. "There are only two kinds of roles that work in Bollywood, the sexy and the glamorous kind. I am looking for more depth," says Koena, who has been living in Los Angeles for the past nine months, in an attempt to get a break in Hollywood.

"It was a risk that I had to take. You can't attain anything without investing time. In Hollywood, one doesn't bag a project over phone calls. You have to work hard, find a manager, give screen tests, attend workshops and take up voice training," says Koena.

The move wasn't without its share of difficulties. "I used to sit and do nothing but wait for a call. Over there, you don't choose your managers, they choose you. I screen-tested three times," she adds. Her perseverance and patience paid off, when she finally signed up for her Hollywood debut, Story of Naomi, alongside Kevin Sorbo, best known for films such as Bitch Slap and Fire Down Below. Michael Hirshenson of Harry Met Sally fame has produced the film, which is to release later this year in the US.

Buzz is that Koena's character in the film is as a bisexual. After wooing men, is she now trying to get a female fan following too? "The news that I play a bisexual character appeared on a micro-blogging site, but that isn't true. Just because the poster shows me standing with a female actor, doesn't mean that I am bisexual in the film," she maintains.

Ask her if her dusky complexion works against her and she says, "Dusky skin and black hair is considered exotic. It opens doors to multi-ethnic roles. But it only works as long as I don't show up on the red carpet in a saree proclaiming my nationality," she adds.

So, is she moving away from glamorous roles? "In Hollywood, one doesn't get typecast. You can play a mother in one film and take up the role of a high school teenager in the next," she says. But has she bid adieu to Bollywood? "No, I'm trying to be part of both Hollywood and Bollywood. I have to finish a couple of projects here and I'll then return to LA to begin shooting for my second Hollywood project," she signs off.

Salman Khan's on the top of my list: Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone
Studio 9 in Hyderabad's film city is bustling with activity as the cast and crew of "Cocktail" are busy shooting portions of the film starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. As they break for lunch, Bollywood's current sunshine girl, Deepika Padukone walks towards her vanity van, looking resplendent in a green gown and minimal make-up. "Hyderabad is fun. I shot for an item number here and also a cola commercial," she says as a greeting. Deepika then bares her heart in an exclusive interview with Hyderabad Times. Excerpts.

You seem to be having a great run as far as the box office results of most of your films are concerned.
True. I think somewhere it has to do with the scripts that I'm choosing, the directors I'm working with and also what the audience likes. I've always tried to do something different - right from "Om Shanti Om", "Love Aaj Kal" and now "Aarakshan". I'm glad my efforts have been appreciated so far.

So, it's a conscious effort to do different films every time?
Somewhere people feel I can be part of these different films which is why they are offered to me. But, it's not a conscious decision. I don't think 'Okay, this year I'll do one romantic film, one political thriller and so on.' It depends on what I'm offered at that point of time and if I connect to it.

Saif and you now have three films. Quite an unconventional pairing...
We were fortunate to have Imtiaz direct us in our first film, where people loved us. But we didn't make a conscious decision to do films with one another. It's just a co-incidence that we are offered great scripts. And I like our pairing, I'm glad it's working.

You have "Rana" with Rajinikanth. Is it on the back-burner for now due to his ill health?
Right now I'm not comfortable talking about it because nothing is more important than Rajini sir's health. He knows I'm there for him and I'm not going anywhere. I'm great friends with Soundarya and they know dates are not an issue, as I'll always work around it for them. I mean, come on, it's a Rajini film! In most cases the script matters, but with this one, it's just the Rajini factor that works. One's career is incomplete if one hasn't worked with THE Rajinikanth.

The current mood in the industry reflects that you are the next big thing. Where do you see yourself in the rat race?
It's just been three years and I have been fortunate to work with some of the best in the industry. But, I have a long way to go now. I have become a lot more confident of myself and my craft. I'd rather have a slow and steady climb, than be a flash in the pan. I'm not looking at retiring or getting married in a few years. And what rat race? I'm here for the long run.

Have the zeroes on your pay-cheque increased with every hit?
Absolutely. Where you stand in the market makes a huge difference to everything that you do.

There's a new Deepika that we see now - candid and outspoken...
You know, I've always been like that. I don't know why people think I've changed. I've always spoken honestly. But, I guess you also learn over a period of time and become confident.

While many appreciated your honesty on "Koffee With Karan", it didn't go down too well with a certain section, (namely the Kapoors).
It didn't bother me one bit. It was my show, the questions were asked to me and I answered them the way I wanted to. I'm not answerable to anyone.

You hardly speak about your relationship with Siddhartha...
No. Relationships or not, I believe that people don't need to know about my life beyond a certain point. I understand there is a curiosity about me and Siddhartha, but there's only that much I'll say about my personal life. You can speculate or gossip, it doesn't bother me.

So how do you maintain fickle relationships in the industry. A big deal is made when you are not spotted at SRK's party at Mannat...
I may not be best friends with many, but that does not mean I don't get along with them. If I wasn't at SRK's party it was because I was shooting in Hyderabad. There is no rift or a fight or anything of that sort.

You've always said that you wanted to work with Salman. Do you think other heroines - Asin, Sonakshi - are trying to pip you at that?
Not at all. I have been offered a lot of films with Salman, unfortunately it has not worked out for many reasons. He is definitely on top of my list of actors I'd die to work with. When the time is right, I will do a film with him. I know he wants to work with me, he knows I want to work with him and people know we want to work with each other, so when times comes, we'll get together on screen.

Simple wedding for Ratan Rajput

Ratan Rajput
So after all the hype, you did a Rakhi Sawant by only getting engaged on the reality show. Will you marry Abhinav?

Why a Rakhi Sawant? We aren't similar, but yes, when it comes to our wedding decision I think we have our funda right - we live for ourselves and don't do things to please others and I feel all girls should be like us. I was not going to marry because others wanted me to - that would have just made some news for a night.

People also said that I was doing this for money but I think I did the right thing. I felt that Abhinav and I should get engaged to get to know each other. We are both taking time off the camera to see if we can understand each other. I can't tell you a date but I can say that the wedding when it happens, will be a simple one. For now, the good news is, that Abhinav has started a new job in Delhi and I shall be going there on August 12 to meet him as it's his birthday then.

Aman Verma in a new role

Aman Verma
Aman Verma, currently seen as Bhanupratap in Na Aana Is Desh Meri Laado, will play Balbeer (Subhash Chandra Bose's confidant) in an upcoming film titled Hitler to Gandhi.

He was very excited to play a sardar for the first time. He polished his mother tongue Punjabi and also practised the lehzaa (Punjabi etiquette) for the role. He initially sported a turban and a beard in the movie but the makers asked him to shoot sans beard and turban for a war sequence as it didn't fit him well. So fond was he of the sikh look that he stuck with it at home. Though the actor was disappointed that he couldn't don the sardar look throughout but made it up for the lost opportunity by sporting one at home

Pooja Gor to get engaged?

Pooja Gor plays a fire brand character in her serial and cut to real life, things are no different.

If the buzz is to be believed, Pooja had a tough time bringing her parents and boyfriend Raj Singh Arora on the same page. Apparently, Pooja's parents didn't approve of their relationship. The lad has also always been uncomfortable talking about his affair with Gor. Insiders feel that he doesn't want people to take him as someone basking in the glory of his girlfriend's popularity.

But he apparently doesn't mind frequenting the sets of Pooja's show and keep the tongues wagging with their chemistry. Pooja, who came to Mumbai a few years ago, fell in love with Arora and intends to marry him in future. Apparently, her parents felt that Raj was not the right one for their daughter. They even expressed their concern to Gor but later gave into her choice fearing that too much of opposition would turn her into a rebel. Buzz is that the actress even wants to shift into the same building as Raj but her parents don't believe in the living-in concept and hence have asked her to commit herself to Raj formally. Of late, the two love birds have been spotted leaving together post her shoot. While Arora didn't revert to our text message, Pooja said, "It's a shocking rumour! Neither are we moving in together nor am I getting engaged anytime soon. We are in a steady relationship and my parents are aware of the fact that Raj is my boyfriend and they are fine with it."

Juhi Parmar gets nostalgic

Rajasthan University recently opened its gates for the new academic session. And while talking to us recently, Jaipur girl and television actress Juhi Parmar got nostalgic about her college days in the city.

She rues, "It's sad that I never really got the time to enjoy my college days because soon after completing my schooling, I shifted to Mumbai for work. So, I had to pursue a correspondence course from University Maharani's College. I don't think the city's education system is lagging behind as most of my friends studied in Jaipur colleges. Haan, ab Jaipur kaafi advance ho gaya hai and people will soon realise its worth."

The moment we got talking about bunking classes, she smiled and said, "Agar bunk karke bhi grades acche aate hain then there is no harm in bunking college."

Aarti Chabria wins Khatron Ke Khiladi 4

The winner of Khatron Ke Khiladi Torchaar Season 4" - Aarti Chabria - spoke to TOI about her experience of being a part of a reality show for the first time ever.

A daredevil act
It was mindblowing! It was a heartening experience to be part of the show as it was a great challenge for me. It was a different experience altogether for me as I have never done this ever in my life. Today as a winner of the show I feel proud of myself and dedicate my winning title to my teammate (in the show) Dhaval Thaku, who has been my support and inspiration. It was a great opportunity and a complete daredevil act which I have never done before. I gave my best and my dedication made me reach the final.

more fit now.I look delicate on-screen, so the audience was pretty amazed to watch me do those stunts. Of course I did undergo a lot of hard training before the show and that made me strong and fit for all the challenges. This show helped me to become physically and even mentally fit.

Chanted During Stunts
There were 13 contestants and everyone has been very supportive. I was not the bravest or the strongest in the show but I was determined that I will give a tough fight to everyone. I used to chant the Hanuman Chalisa every moment I would do a stunt and that helped me a lot. It gave me the power and confidence to fight against all odd situations.

Proved myself
I feel this show has given me the opportunity to prove myself. Now I feel more confident to do an action-oriented role on the big screen someday.

Worst & Best Stunt
The worst stunt was when I was buried alive in the sand and had 101 rats all over my body. I freaked out at that moment.

And my winning shot was the best shot I guess. I had to be inside a burning bus and my teammate had to get the keys and get me free from that bus. It was quite amazing.

No time for TV: Veena Malik

Pakistani actress Veena Malik, who had wowed the Indian telly viewers in reality show Bigg Boss, says that she's not too keen to do TV shows at this juncture.

"Currently I'm concentrating on two Bollywood films Daal Mein Kuch Kaala Hai and Today. So TV will have to wait," says she.

And what about the reports that she is doing the next edition of reality show Swayamvar on Imagine TV after Ratan Rajput? "Yes, I was offered the show, but I couldn't do it because I don't have that kind of time to devote to TV right now. May be later, if something interesting comes along, I don't mind doing it! Right now, my focus is on films alone," says she.

Lara Dutta confirms her pregnancy?

Rumours of Bollywood beauty Lara Dutta's pregnancy have been doing rounds on the internet these days.

However, Lara and her husband Mahesh Bhupathi are yet to react to the rumour. The reason, which is feeding the rumour of Lara's pregnancy, is that the former beauty queen is spending more time in Bangalore rather than Mumbai.

The actress has not accepted any new assignment after Chalo Dilli. This is the second reason, which supports the rumor. Lara has just two films in her kitty, ‘Banda Yeh Bindas hai’ and Don 2, for which shooting has been completed.

Well, if news is correct, than Lara will be the second Bollywood actress after Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to start the family.

NO SMOKING wins awards at Indian Film Festival

NO SMOKING released in 2007 is still continuing to make an impression in the festival circuit abroad. The Anurag Kashyap directed film has recently won a few awards for itself at the Indian Film Festival and would be enjoying repeated screening for itself. The festival would first play at three venues in Beijing (China) and then also travel five cities globally.

Film Producer Kumar Mangat says, "I am very happy that my film NO SMOKING is being awarded and appreciated even outside India. It has been almost four years since NO SMOKING was released and it's still getting a huge platform and a chance to be part of these festivals. What more can a producer wish for?"

Vishal Bhardwaj, who had co-produced the film with Kumar Mangat, adds, "I felt very pleased and contented on learning about my film being recognized and awarded internationally. NO SMOKING was a film based on different subject unlikely the customary commercial cinema. When a film like this garners so much appreciation, it is overwhelming and motivates it's makers too!

Deepika back as glamourous diva with Desi Boyz

Deepika Padukone has had enough of playing non-glam part in a series of films. So when Prakash Jha, Ashutosh Gowariker and Pradeep Sarkar asked her to turn plain Jane for their respective films, Deepika didn't protest and willingly stepped into plain suit-salwars, sarees and T-shirts respectively while also keeping her make-up minimal. Even in BREAK KE BAAD which was set in Mauritius, director Danish Aslam wanted her to play the girl next door which means designer outfits were out of question.

However none of that would be the case in DESI BOYZ where Deepika would be back at being her glamorous best. After consciously staying away from that make-up kit for her AARAKSHAN, KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY and LAFANGEY PARINDEY, Deepika has sent an SOS to her styling team and made sure that she comes across as an ultra glam personality in her winter release DESI BOYZ.

"Deepika is doing everything possible to stand out in the Akshay Kumar and John Abraham starrer," her friend continues, "Since the film is set in London, Deepika doesn't want to look out of place. Also, the film belongs to a genre that is quintessentially commercial and cool on eyes. During the shooting of her film, she summoned her stylist, costume designer, make-up staff and hair dressers to give her an ultra glam look. She also hit the gym hard to look in best shape and make heads turn. She knows that before this year comes to close; DESI BOYZ is one film that would present her in an altogether different light."

Deepika too admits that for DESI BOYZ she has gone through a definite make-over. "DESI BOYZ requires me to play glamorous and I have done whatever possible to make sure that I look my best," says Deepika who would next be seen in AARAKSHAN before she sizzles again in DESI BOYZ this winter.

Kajal misses the promotion of SINGHAM

Kajal Aggarwal, who makes her Bollywood debut opposite Ajay Devgn in the much touted SINGHAM directed by Rohit Shetty has been the talk of the town for a while now.

The pretty actress is a big name down south and her performance in the movie is being highly anticipated by industry people and audiences alike. The actress has been on a tight schedule ever since she got back from Europe where she was shooting for one of her south films.

She has been in and out of the city promoting SINGHAM with the rest of the team on one hand and juggling her shoot for her south movie in Hyderabad in between. Needless to say she has over worked herself with the shooting, interviews, events etc. The actress was supposed to leave for the capital yesterday with the entire SINGHAM team including Rohit and Ajay for the last leg of SINGHAM promotions but fell unwell last minute.

The southern beauty is suffering from high fever and a terrible cough and cold. So much so that she has been advised complete bed rest for a couple of days by her doctor. The actress had to give the visit to Delhi a miss and is terribly upset as she wanted to go all out to promote her first Bollywood film.

When asked about the same, the actress said, "I have been having a great time promoting my film SINGHAM and Delhi being one of my favorite cities, I was really looking forward to going there and interacting with all. Unfortunately, I was down with the flu and my temperature kept rising. I really wanted to be there. Hopefully soon I will be making a trip to the capital."

The actress will fly to Chennai for another shoot once she gets better.

Beyonce says Eastwood film makes her day

NEW YORK  - Beyonce Knowles has had it all before turning 30, yet is still humbled by what she calls "the biggest opportunity of my life" -- the lead role in Clint Eastwood's remake of the film, "A Star Is Born."

The singer and burgeoning actress, whose fourth solo album "4" debuted at No. 1 on pop charts after its release in June, told Reuters she felt lucky to have landed the iconic role previously played by Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland.

Eastwood will helm the fourth remake of the story about rising singer and actress Esther Blodgett, and Beyonce fondly remembers being a young girl and watching previous versions of the movie with her mother.

"It's when I became a fan of Barbra Streisand's. And I then saw Judy Garland's version of 'A Star Is Born' and I realized every 20 to 30 years a new star is born and a new talent represents that generation and era -- so I didn't think that I would ever get the opportunity to be the star," she said.

Beyonce has won 16 Grammy Awards, is married to rapper mogul Jay-Z, has topped Forbes magazine's lists of the most powerful and influential celebrities and is one of the world's top-grossing musicians. She starred in other movies with large ensemble casts, such as the widely-praised "Dreamgirls", but she said meeting Oscar winner Eastwood still made her quiver.

"I met with Clint and I was so nervous and I know that it is the biggest opportunity of my life. I will work as hard as I can," she said. "Because I can't wait. And I am so happy that he trusts me and I am in good hands and I am so fortunate."

The film is due to begin shooting at the end of the year and, according to showbiz website Deadline Hollywood, may also co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. But for now, Beyonce is still busy managing the singing career that she has taken over from her father and longtime manager, Matthew Knowles.

The switch has the music industry watching closely. Without directly addressing her father, Beyonce said it was "difficult balancing the business and the creativity."

"Having to balance the two is really hard and really making sure that I'm still doing my job, which is to be the performer and the entertainer and not have to do everyone else's job so that mine doesn't suffer, that's been a challenge," she said.

She added: "I'm sleeping with my blackberry, I'm having dreams that I'm answering e-mails, like it's that far!"
LABOR OF LOVE
While "4," debuted at No. 1, its first week sales were her lowest to date and singles "Run the World (Girls)" and "Best Thing I Never Had" have not performed as well as other hits, from "Crazy In Love" on her first album to her third CD's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" and "Halo."

The Houston-born singer, who first experienced fame with the all-girl group "Destiny's Child," said that with "4" she wanted to make a cohesive album that was "one body of work."

"This album was a labor of love. It was not about singles," she said. "I felt like the emotion and live instruments and just soul (were) missing out of the music industry, especially the popular music that's out. I wanted to bring it back to the music I grew up listening to. It's like a mixture of the '90s and the '70s and rock-n-roll."

Beyonce heralds the video for "Run the World (Girls)" as a current favorite, but acknowledges that the black-and-white video for "Single Ladies," which showed off her swinging pelvis and rhythmic dance moves in a one-piece bodysuit, was a hard act to follow.

That video "was something that no one knew would become the phenomenon it became, thank God. And I know I am so lucky to have one of those moments in my career. It is just a blessing."
Her move to take charge of her career -- everything from her tour performances to videos -- is partly aimed at inspiring younger stars to take control of their careers, she said, citing one of her major influences, Michael Jackson.

"It just feels like no one else can tell me how I am supposed to perform, and I think it's what separates the Michaels and the Madonnas from the artists that are great but are just not quite the Michaels and the Madonnas," Beyonce said.

While some industry watchers have wondered if success has gone to her head, Beyonce seems to exhibit very little of the ego of many pop stars and said as the years progress, she will likely be living "vicariously" through other artists.

As she turns 30 years-old in September, what can she possibly achieve by, say, 60?
"I am sure at 60 I will not doing the Oh-Oh-Oh dance, that will not be cute," she laughed, referring to the 'Single Ladies' dance. "I think my priority will be my children and hopefully my grandchildren by then -- and my record label or production company or whatever else."
