King Khan? In 2011, Salman's Ready is biggest Bollywood box-office hit

Salman Khan's Ready is the biggest box-office hit in the first six months of 2011. Now having delivered three super duper hits in the past three years — Wanted (2008) and Dabangg (2010), being the other two — he continues to be Bollywood's hottest star.

"Salman rules. Ready is the biggest hit of 2011 so far. But overall, it has been a mixed year for the Hindi film industry," says Komal Nahta, editor, Film Information.

"Other films that made profits this year include Yamla Pagla Deewana, Tanu Weds Manu, Haunted (3D) and Raagini MMS. No
One Killed Jessica too has done well. Two major box-office turkeys are Dum Maaro Dum and 7 Khoon Maaf," says Nahta.

Delhi Belly was released on July 1, the second half of the year. Early box-office trends indicate that the movie will end up making sizeable profits. Nahta says that the Aamir Khan production could become 'a cult film among the youth'.

He adds, "Delhi Belly's all-India weekend collections grossed Rs 23 crore while Big B's Buddhah Hoga Tera Baap has collected Rs 7 crore in the same period."

Kamal Gianchandani, president, PVR Pictures, maintains that the year did not begin on a happy note for Bollywood. "Jan-Feb 2011 was lean and predictable. But No One Killed Jessica and Tanu Weds Manu did well in those months," he says.

Nahta points out that Bollywood collections were also lean between March to May 2011. Reason: ODI cricket World Cup, followed by IPL 4. "There were no major releases during that period because of cricket," he says.

Interestingly, small filmmakers saw the period as a window of opportunity. In the six IPL weeks between April 8-May 28, at least 20 films were released. Quality low budget films such as Shor in the City, I Am and Stanley Ka Dabba were released. And thanks to the absence of big budget Bollywood, these films got plenty of attention, if not box-office rewards.

Gianchandani also cites the example of Hollywood films such as The Hole (released March 18) and Fox Star Studio's 3D extravaganza Rio (released April 8) doing well during the cricket months. "They turned out to be big films for us. Their box office collections were beyond expectations," he says.

The industry is now keenly awaiting the release of Rohit Shetty's Singham, Prakash Jha's Aarakshan and Shah Rukh Khan starrers, Ra One and Don 2.

Sonakshi gains weight, loses role

Sonakshi Sinha is no longer a part of Kamal Hassan’s Vishwaroopam, and hushed whispers are doing the rounds, about how the issue with Sonakshi came not from dates, but her weight. Apparently her character in the film has a number of action sequences and therefore needs to be lean and fit.

Sonakshi is rumoured to have weight problems, and apparently puts on weight if she doesn’t stick to a strict diet and workout regime.

A source told a daily, "The makers gave her a couple of months to get lean. She had to do outfit trials and also begin physical training. However, she was unable to look the part even after that."

The movie was supposed to start shooting by the end of June, and Sonakshi cited delays as her reason for quitting the film. However, Tollywood buzz has it that the real reason was her weight problems.

The source also told the daily that Kamal Hassan is now searching for new faces. "It's a big budget film and he doesn't want any more delays. The reason he chose Sonakshi is because he really liked her work in Dabangg and thought she would appeal to the audience down south as well. However, now that things haven't worked out, they have gone separate ways."

Is Angelina Jolie worth $30 million a year?

Angelina Jolie raked in $30 million last year? Really? Is she worth that, and is she worth more than Jennifer Aniston, who earned $28 million? —Jean V., via the inbox

Well! Someone wants me to keep the whole Homewrecker-vs.-America's Sweetheart feud alive and well, doesn't she? I'll pass, thanks.

But I will tell you exactly why Hollywood deems Angelina Jolie—and Jennifer Aniston, and Reese Witherspoon, and Sarah Jessica Parker, all of whom Forbes just ranked among the industry's highest paid--to be worth every cent. And why those figures may, in fact, be on the low side:

THIS JUST IN: Angelina Jolie Does Something!

And we need look no further than the grosses, the amount of money these women bring in, worldwide, every time they report to a set. Take "The Tourist," that film that was, apparently, supposed to be a thriller. Despite Johnny Depp serving as a costar, critics loathed the film and, as Forbes points out, it "initially looked like it was going to be a flop after a paltry opening weekend box-office haul of $16 million."

But then came the rest of the planet.

"Thanks mostly to the overseas market," Forbes notes, "the film went on to earn $280 million, cementing Jolie's appeal abroad."

So, $30 million may seem like an obscene amount of money to make, until you put it next to $280 million. Then, $30 million seems a tad more reasonable.

According to E. Barry Haldeman, a former Paramount executive and current entertainment lawyer, we're talking only about major A-list stars here, people who can, in old-timey feel-good parlance, "open a picture."

Only those folks can still demand, and receive, say, $20 million per picture against another 20 percent of the gross income.

"These are actors who, the studio perceives, will put butts in seats and bring people in," Haldeman tells me. "When you're putting together a movie, everyone wants to know who you have attached before they go ahead and spend the money. It's really based on audience appeal."

As for Aniston, she's likely earning slightly less because her films are earning less. Last year's tired baby comedy "The Switch" has brought in less than $45 million worldwide; "The Bounty Hunter" earned a more respectable $131 million, but still: That's not $280 million. Sure, the Jolie movie also had Depp, as opposed to Gerard Butler, but less money all around generally means less pay for the principles involved.

As for Sarah Jessica Parker, she appears to be earning money not only from her films (no comment) but also her beauty brand. Per Forbes, her scents Lovely, Covet and NYC, earned $18 million of her $30 million income for 2010.
One last fact: The figures reported by Forbes may be low.

"These stars get a list of perks that would choke a horse," Haldeman tells me. "Think 10 round-trip airfares for them and their entourages, suites or houses on location, personal chefs. So their actual pay may not be $20 million. It may be $21.5 million because the perks cost you a million five."

$1.5 million in perks just because you're Angelina Jolie? Yes.

Then again, that amount isn't $280 million either, is it?
