Prince of Tides: William rules the waves as he beats Duchess of Cambridge in dragon boat race... but despite the drizzly day Kate looks simply 'oarsome'

Wet, grey and miserable…it wasn't quite the right day for a trip to the seaside.
But that failed to stop the Duke and Duchess plough on with the latest leg of their tour of Canada - turning their hand from everything from Dragon Boat Racing to a soaking game of beach volleyball.

The couple were on Prince Edward Island, the setting for one of Kate's favourite childhood books, Anne of Green Gables Set in the 1870s, the novel recounts the life and times of a feisty red-headed schoolgirl, Anne Shirley, who is adopted by brother and sister farmers in the mistaken belief they are taking in a young boy.

Heather Moyse, the Olympic bobsled gold medallist, shared a joke with William as she presented him with a bottle of champagne for winning the race.

The sportswoman said she heard the royal on the radio joking about persuading his uncle the Earl of Wessex to rename the island Prince William Island.

She said: 'I told him PWI is harder to say than PEI, but if he could arrange it with his uncle we would not mind.'

She added: 'Both he and Kate are very competitive, so I think it was good. As a female athlete, I would be really annoyed if someone let me win.'

The royal couple were later welcomed by First Nations people with a traditional Mi'kmaq smudging ceremony.

Methilda Knockwood-Snache, 60, a Mi'kmaq elder who had lit some Sage leaves in a bowl wafted the smoke with an eagle wing towards the Duke and Duchess standing in front of her.
Kate went first in the ceremony cupping her hands and wafting the pungent smoke up to her face before chatting to the 60-year-old.

William followed and did the same and also exchanged a few words with the elder before the royals gave Ms Knockwood-Snache and others with her, traditional gifts of tea - from exclusive store Fortnum and Mason - and red velvet packages containing tobacco.

After the ceremony the elder said the ritual cleanses the recipient's 'bad thoughts', senses and body.

She added: 'I told William it would help him in his job as he's going to be faced with a lot of work and some times will be hard.

'I said that's why I'm smudging you to offer you guidance and he said 'I really need it'.

The book has sold more than 50 million copies and draws thousands of tourists to the picturesque island, with its charming bays and clapperboard houses, each year.

At a reception to welcome them to PEI, as it is known, Kate chattered excitedly about her childhood passion for the book which she first read when she was eight. 'She [Anne Shirley] was a real heroine. You could lose yourself in it. I loved it,' she said.

The morning saw the couple first take part in more formal festivities, with the Duchess dressing for the occasion in a nautical-style cream and pale blue cable-knit pencil dress by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, who designed her much-lauded wedding dress.

Unusually, she had her long, dark hair tied back in a loose pony tail courtesy of her personal hairdresser, James Pryce, who has joined her for the trip.

Sadly, however, the heavens truly opened just before they were due to arrive for a fun-packed afternoon at the picturesque beachside resort of Dalvay-by-the-Sea.

There was just enough time for a quick change into more casual fare.

For Kate this was figure-hugging blue trousers showing her tiny physique and a navy overcoat topped off with a red scarf casually knotted around her neck and white and cream deck shoes.

First it was a chance for William show off his skills an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot, by co-piloting a Sea King.

As his wife – who admitted earlier this week she worries every time the pilot prince takes off – waved, William climbed aboard the chopper for a demonstration of 'waterbirding', a manoeuvre unique to Canadian pilots which is designed to simulate an emergency landing on water.

The Duchess excitedly took pictures of her husband from the edge of the lake.
On one occasion, he brought the helicopter around in front of his wife and banked slightly so she had a good view into the cockpit before flying off.

The Duke specifically asked to take part in the training exercise as the technique is legendary among helicopter pilots and he is one of only a handful of British ones who have had the opportunity to try it.

William was then joined on the water by his wife for a spot of Dragon Boat racing.
The jaunt proved a welcome return for Kate, who in 2007 trained with all-girl team The Sisterhood for a cross-Channel dragon boat fundraiser when she was dating the prince.
She was forced to pull out shortly before the race took place, however, over fears that her presence would attract too many photographers.

The night before her latest adventure the Duchess confided that she fully expected William to win.

'I think I am going to take a ducking,' she told reporters.

William wasn't quite as confident, admitting: 'We are both very competitive.'She beats me at tennis and skiing but I am better at the rest.'

The Duke and Duchess were put in opposing teams and helped to row across the other side of Dalvay Lake.

William's team pipped Kate's to victory by a third of a length and as he got out of the boat he hugged his wife in a rare public display of affection, although aides said there was a fair bit of joshing afterwards.

Despite the miserable conditions, the Duke and Duchess enthusiastically ploughed on with a planned walkabout, sampling local foods including lobster, oysters and chocolate-covered potato crisps -  which taste far nicer than they sound.

The couple also took part in a native Mi'kmaq 'smudging' ceremony where they were brushed with burning herbs, including sage and cedar, to cleanse them of negative energy by First Nation Chief, Lennox Island.

The couple, who enjoy sparring at tennis and other sports, entered into the spirit of competition beforehand.

Asked who was going to win William said, 'We are. Of course!'

And when Kate approached with her team, she was less certain.

Are you going to win? 'Not sure about that. I'm feeling slightly nervous,' she said.

'What they've seen in Quebec, in Montreal the last two days is, for them, just part of the rich fabric of Canada and in no way detracts from how much they respect and admire the country,' said the couple's spokesman, Miguel Head.

'They've very much fallen in love with the country.'

The jeers contrasted with the start of the royal couple's Canadian trip in the largely English-speaking capital, Ottawa, where they were cheered by tens of thousands of people on Friday's Canada Day holiday.

Quebec separatists are angry that Canada still has ties to the monarchy. Queen Elizabeth II is still the country's head of state.

Police were out in force in downtown Quebec City. About 200 protesters, some wearing black and waving flags, demonstrated about two blocks from City Hall, where Prince William, a Royal Air Force helicopter pilot, attended a ceremony to honour and inspect the Royal 22e Regiment, the most famous French-speaking unit in the Canadian military.

A larger crowd of several hundred supporters, chanting 'Will and Kate' were allowed closer to City Hall and greeted the royal motorcade with loud cheers when it arrived.
After a military band played the first six bars of 'God Save the Queen,' Prince William made brief remarks entirely in French.

'You, the Quebecois et Quebecoise, have such vitality and a remarkable pride. We are simply delighted to be here,' he said.

Undeterred by the nearby protesters, Prince William and Kate charmed the Quebeckers with an unexpected walkabout. The royal couple went to the barricade, chatting and shaking hands with enthusiastic supporters in the square around City Hall before leaving by motorcade.

Support for the separatists among Quebeckers has been on the decline in recent years as the 80 per cent French-speaking province has enjoyed plenty of autonomy even without quitting Canada.

Salman, Akshay to clash at box-office

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan is gearing up to compete with Khiladi Akshay Kumar at the box-office on June 1, next year.

Salman’s first film with the Yash Chopra banner ‘EK Tha Tiger' is scheduled to release on the same day with Akshay’s 'Housefull' sequel.

Akshay has already started shooting in full swing for ‘Housefull 2’ from the mid of last month, while the Salman and Katrina starrer 'EK Tha Tiger' will go on floors from this month.

The makers of 'Housefull 2' were keen to release the film post the IPL league, in 2012, and are confident that the sequel will prove to be a hit just like the original.

Director Sajid has already revealed that the ladies in the 'Housefull' sequel are going to look more glamorous and sexy than before.

"Well, 'Housefull' as a franchise is known for it's glamour and I am only going to take it to the next level here. Asin, Jackie, Zarine, Shazahn - Each of would be seen as glamorous, hot and sexy here. Their look would be different from their earlier films," said Sajid.

Salman and Akshay want to do Kamal Hassan’s comedy film

The latest buzz doing the rounds is that filmmakers Farah Khan and Priyadarshan are fighting for the remake rights of Kamal Hassan’s Tamil comedy film 'Michael Madana Kama Rajan'.

Farah is keen to cast Salman for the Tamil remake film, while Priyadarshan wants to rope in his favorite actor Akshay Kumar.

'Michael Madana Kama Rajan' was a 1990’s blockbuster comedy film which revolves around quadruplets. This film had Kamal Hassan portraying four characters from different walks of life with ease.

For MMKR, Kamal won several accolades for his perfect comic timing and also for his acting. This film is still considered to be the best comedy film in the Kollywood industry.

Salman’s real life attitude will be seen 'Chillar Party'

‘Chillar Party’, which is produced by Salman Khan, will see the actor’s real life attitude being captured in the film.

Speaking about Salman, the director stated, “I have to thank Sohail Khan for making his family watch the film. This film captures Salman's attitude through its narrative of spontaneity, innocence and irreverence. In every way this film is a tribute to Salman's real life style and attitude. When Salman saw this film he didn't have to take time to be part of the project after realizing how much of himself he saw in the film.”

'Breaking Dawn' Star Goes Shirtless for Fourth of July: Robert Pattinson?

Breaking Dawn star Robert Pattinson toasting the Fourth of July by baring it all? Not a chance! The British heart-throb is leaving the celebration of America's patriotic holiday all to his co-star Kellan Lutz, who is taking his duty seriously, very seriously.

Lutz hit up the Independence Day Weekend Party at the Ciroc Cabana Club yesterday in Water Mill, New York, where he showed off his athletic prowess by playing a game of tennis (and by flashing his ripped physique). There may have been plenty of six-pack beers (and vodka!) to go around, but Lutz provided his own six-pack during his shirtless tennis game and subsequent pool time.

But, it might as well have been Robert Pattinson sizzling up the Fourth of July party by going shirtless, given he had the expert guidance of Kellan Lutz to help him buff up for Breaking Dawn.

"I'm really proud of Rob for working out and really training really hard... He talked to me about what proteins to drink and what to do and he listened and cared. He had a great mentality for it," said Breaking Dawn's Lutz, who wore a red and blue striped shirt (quickly discarded!) and navy pants with white flip-flops to the Ciroc Cabana Club.

Nothing like the red, white and blue--and a bit of brotherly advice!

Hot to trot! Kristen Stewart braves the desert heat for a horse riding class ahead of new film role

Kristen Stewart braved scorching temperatures as she began preparation for her new movie, Snow White and the Huntsman, in Palms Springs, California.

The Twilight star was spotted taking horse riding lessons in 117F (47.2C) heat at an equestrian centre in the desert city on Friday.

While the original Snow White was never seen in the saddle, it appears the 21-year-old plans to bring more action to the role.

Since being cast as Alice in the new Snow White trilogy, Kristen, has been putting some serious time and effort into getting in shape.

Just last week Kirsten was seen dashing into her local gym in Beverly Hills for a yoga class, and this week she made the dedicated actress braved the blazing desert sun in a bid to master the art.

Dressed in grey jeans, riding boots and a sleeveless T-shirt, the Twilight star saddled-up and took to the sandy paddock in the midday sun.

Never one to give too much away, Kristen looked calm and quietly confident as she took instructions from the teacher and lead her horse through a series of tricky manoeuvres.

With a firm hand and a serious expression, she seemed set on getting the most out of her lesson, despite the blistering sunshine.

Fans of the young starlet will be eager to know what else Kristen has been doing to prepare for the new movie, which also stars Oscar-winning actress, Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen and Thor star, Chris Hemsworth, as the Huntsman.

Making a stand: Kristen and her horse look to have different ideas as she calmly tries to perform the next move

The movie's producer, Joe Roth, recently told Entertainment Weekly: 'We retain the basic story, a young girl meant to be the queen who is cast out.

'The huntsman is a mercenary, in the sense that he's a guy who is very able in the woods, more able than almost anyone.

'His job is to capture runaway girls, who are all fleeing the kingdom because of the queen. He's a nondescript bounty hunter, as we first meet him.'

On casting Kristen as the movie's lead, Roth added: 'Frankly, what we did, we searched high and low for an unknown.

'But as we went through it, it just became evident to me that Kristen occupies a space in the universe where she’s a terrific actress only known for one part. I hope this is a movie that will appeal to those who find Twilight appealing.'

Kristen, who dates her fellow Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson, didn't waste any time in getting back to her heart throb boyfriend.

Once her lesson was over, she made her way back to Beverly Hills and ran a few errands, but then ran into a bit of bad luck when she got herself a parking ticket.

Cheryl Cole’s heart-to-heart with her former mother-in-law

IF there was any doubt about Cheryl Cole wanting to give ex-hubby Ashley a second chance, I can end it now – she has just had a heart-to-heart with his mum!

The Geordie beauty spent yesterday afternoon talking things over with her former mother-in-law, Sue.

Sue, 53, who lives in Chigwell, Essex, is said to have formed a strong bond with Cheryl during the marriage and fought hard to keep her and Ashley together.

She is desperate to see the singer – who has moved back into the old marital home in Godalming, Surrey, with Ashley – properly reunited with her footballer son.

I’m told: “Sue is incredibly fond of Cheryl and is forever singing her praises. She says she is so glad to have her daughter-in-law back.

“She realises how insanely happy Cheryl makes Ashley and believes they are a good team... Sue saw the positive impact which Cheryl had on Ashley. She loves her son and wants the best for him – as far as she is concerned Cheryl was nothing but a positive influence.”

Ashley, 30, is certainly keen to prove he is a changed man.

He flew back across the Atlantic from business meetings with megastar rapper Jay-Z in New York just to be present at Cheryl’s 28th birthday party in London on Friday. If Ashley was worried about what his mum and his ex missus might be saying yesterday, there was no sign of it. The Chelsea player looked relaxed as he was snapped leaving the training ground behind the wheel of his Bentley.

Ashley has admitted: “I’ve made mistakes and have just got to live with it.” And in a new interview he added: “I just wish people would judge me more on football and speak about football more than a life that people don’t really know.”

Friends of the couple say they are keen to put their past troubles behind them and are even talking about re-marriage and babies.

It seems Ashley has become very broody following the birth of his brother Matthew’s second child. My source says: “Family is the most important thing for Ashley – along with his football. Everyone is telling them what good-looking children they would have.”

That would certainly please his mum, who raised him and his brother Matthew single-handedly.

Ashley has said of his mother: “I just try and make her happy.

“She comes and watches every game I play. I play for her as well. As long as I make her smile after the game, it makes me happy.”

Cheryl’s chat with Sue was the first step in getting their respective families to support their decision to give their love another go.

Unfortunately, it looks as if her own mum Joan Callaghan will need a lot more convincing before she gives them her blessing.

At Cheryl’s party, Joan, 51, reportedly fumed: “I don’t want her to have him back. I’ll never forgive him for what he did to her.”

My source says: “Joan has Cheryl’s best interests at heart. She is the person who is most open and honest with her, and was there to pick up the pieces when they split up.

“She wants Cheryl to take her time before she makes any decisions.”

Lady Gaga to guest judge 'So You Think You Can Dance'

Lady Gaga performs during the 2011 MuchMusic Video Awards in Toronto on Sunday, June 19, 2011.
Lady Gaga is to guest judge "So You Think You Can Dance."

The "Edge Of Glory" hitmaker -- who is currently in Singapore as part of her Monster's Ball tour -- will join permanent judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy on the panel of the dance competition.

Show boss Nigel -- also at the helm of "American Idol" said: "Lady Gaga will give great advice on how to handle yourself, how to be creative with what you do, and how to be a fabulous performer.

"Her help is going to be invaluable."

This isn't the first time the 25-year-old singer has appeared on a US reality show.

In May, Lady Gaga acted as a guest mentor on "American Idol" and instructed the four finalists -- including eventual winner Scotty McCreery -- on how to prepare for the live shows, telling the hopefuls to embrace their "sexy" sides and give the judges "a little drama."

She said at the time: "I just want to give them senses of inspiration and confidence. And to help them bring out what's really special about them."

Watch out for a sexier Katrina

The actress bags a role in the film and is already going through a special training to fit the part

It is confirmed. Katrina Kaif is the next Dhoom girl. Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra were also in the running for the role but it was Kats who finally bagged the project.

She will star opposite Aamir Khan in this Yash Raj banner's next to be directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya.

Esha Deol and Bipasha Basu went through a complete make over and wowed the audience with their super hot bods and bikini look in the earlier editions of the movie.

It is to be seen now whether Aditya Chopra can convince Katrina to let go of her inhibitions and don a bikini in this one.

A source informs, "Kats will have a sexy makeover for the film, as per the tradition. A Dhoom girl is supposed to look extremely sensous.

Though she has great body but for this film she will have to undergo special training and tone up a bit more."

YRF's favourite

The model-turned-actress seems to have become the latest blue-eyed girl of the Yash Raj Films. Dhoom 3 will be her fifth film with the banner.

The actress has just wrapped-up Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and is soon to start shooting for Kabir Khan's Ek Tha Tiger with Salman Khan. She is also doing Yash Chopra's next with Shah Rukh Khan.

As of now, barring Zindagi Na Mile Dobara, Kats is only doing films with YRF.

I will marry only after Salman does: Yuvraj Singh

I will marry only after Salman does: Yuvraj SinghAs he gears up for the England tour, Yuvraj Singh talks about love and infidelity

After Ajay Devgn kickstarted the third season of Emotional Atyachar, Yuvraj Singh shot for an episode of the reality show recently. We caught up with the ICC World Cup's Man of the Tournament for his take on couples testing each other's loyalty on national television, his single status and his preparation for his next international tour.

First up, what prompted you to appear on a reality show like this?

Emotional Atyachar is an interesting concept, where one finds out about couples and how their relationships can go wrong. The idea makes me curious as it is a way for couples to sort out their differences and know where their relationships stand.

Why do you think makes people stray in their relationships?

Relationships survive on trust and if that is broken at any point, it's pretty much the end of the relationship. Besides, inability to communicate leads to problems.

Having seen the previous season's episodes, what comes to mind while watching cheaters getting caught red-handed?

It's never a good feeling to watch the whole showdown taking place and it's not nice to see someone's trust broken. Also, it's never just about the couple, there are other people involved as well -- families, friends and society. It's great if lessons are learnt from the show.

Personally, do you think it's necessary to expose the lying partner on national TV?

It's not my call when it comes to people deciding to test their relationships on national TV. It's the people who're prepared to come onto this platform to test the trust factor in their relationship. Everybody makes their own decisions.

Having been in relationships before, has the idea of straying crossed your mind?

Let's say, it happens when couples don't spend enough time together or don't communicate regularly. Then, the relationship is bound to be strained and that's also when people stray. Moving on to cricket, one expected to see you play in the West Indies tour.

More so after being named the Man of the Tournament at the ICC World Cup. It is actually very simple, I fell sick and was unable to play. As a sportsman it is important to stay fit and I am in good shape to give my best to my game.

After that high, the IPL season didn't turn out to be as satisfying for the new Pune team, of which you're captain. Do you think there's an overdose of cricket now?

The amount of cricket we are playing has increased in the last few years and whenever somebody needs rest, the selectors are very considerate. In addition, it brings opportunities for younger players to show their caliber.

From being sidelined due to poor form to being celebrated for the World Cup, how has people's attitude towards you changed?

I actually do not worry about what people say. I just work hard and be with the team, family and friends. Fan support is equally important and our hard work will show when we play.

Aren't your parents asking you to settle down and marry after MS Dhoni tied the knot?

I will only think of settling down after Salman Khan, the other most eligible bachelor plans to settle down. We are eligible bachelors, but he's the rockstar so let him get married first, then I'll think about myself.
