A.R. Rahman, Karsh Kale Coming to Hollywood Bowl

Oscar- and Grammy-winning composer A.R. Rahman will headline an evening concert July 10 at the fabled Hollywood Bowl. Rahman will perform along with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Matt Dunkley.

The show, titled “Journey to India,” is sponsored in part by KCRW-FM and will be hosted by KCRW personality Tom Schnabel.

Also on the bill are leading Bollywood playback singer Shreya Ghoshal; innovative percussionist-composer Karsh Kale; the Sher Foundation; and returnees Bollywood Step Dance and Rhythms of Rajasthan (both of whom performed with Rahman when he made his Bowl debut in 2006). The concert benefits the LA Phil Musicians Pension Fund, according to an announcement from the Hollywood Bowl.

Rahman was in the news recently when he revealed that he had formed a supergroup along with Mick Jagger, vocalist Joss Stone, Grammy-winning reggae artist Damian Marley, and Eurythmics founder Andy Stewart. He is also collaborating with American pop singer Michael Bolton on a song, according to reports.

Rahman is also attached to the Indian film projects “Rana” (starring Rajnikanth), “Paani” (from Shekhar Kapur) and Imtiaz Ali’s “Rockstar.”

TV review: Mildred Pierce; The TV Book Club

My local video rental place didn't have a copy of Michael Curtiz's 1945 film Mildred Pierce for which Joan Crawford won an Oscar; and I spent an unsuccessful evening trying to download it (legally, illegally, who knows, surely it's so ancient it doesn't matter?) from the internet. I have seen it but clearly I don't remember it well enough to make any meaningful comparison between it and Todd Haynes's new five-part HBO mini-series version of Mildred Pierce (Sky Atlantic, Saturday). I can picture Crawford, in all the pomp and glory of 1940s Hollywood melodrama, Acting with a capital A.

Kate Winslet's new Mildred is subtler and more nuanced. It's a beautiful performance, of a woman in dowdy dresses struggling to maintain her social status in the depression of the the 1930s. When we first meet her, she's painstakingly icing a cake to sell, before tackling her good-for-nothing husband about his infidelities. The resulting row ends with his departure, from the house and from her life, leaving her with two girls to bring up alone. Apart from an awkward romp with her husband's business partner, the rest of this opening episode is taken up with Mildred looking for a job and the shame of having to take on work (waitressing) beneath her station.

Galloping, rat-a-tat, quick-fire drama this isn't. The camera lingers on period furnishings and kitchenware, setting the scene, ramming home the era. Or it lingers on Winslet's expressions. I hesitate to use the word plodding, because it is compelling, in a dark but human kind of way . . . Oh, all right then, it does plod a bit. It may be beautiful and sumptuous, but there's not enough going on, or even enough hints of what will go on. If you haven't seen the old movie, or read James M Cain's novel which this version follows more faithfully, you might not come back for more – and you'd miss the passion and sensuality that will come with the arrival of the real love interest (played by Guy Pearce), Mildred's rise to success in a man's world, her increasingly difficult relationship with her elder daughter, who turns into a monster . . . I don't want to give too much away.

I've watched one more episode, and things do begin to get going. It's probably worth sticking with, not for the fun of it – there's not much of that around – but because it will suck you in. And Winslet, in a bravely unglamorous role, continues to mesmerise. She won't win an Oscar of course, it being television, but she might win something.

You'd think the The TV Book Club (More4, Sunday) might have a novelist on its panel, given that it's a show about novels. But they – Jo Brand, Adrian Edmondson, Rory McGrath and Meera Syal – are all comedians and actors. I know they've written books, but books isn't what they do for a day job. The guest – Bettany Hughes – is a historian. Well, at least she's been on the judging panel of a literary prize, she must have read a lot of books.

Ah, and here's the novelist, via outside broadcast. Amis, McEwen, Smith, Ali . . ? No, Cooper (Jilly). But she's got some terrific advice for aspiring writers: put a lot of colours in. "'A man riding down a road on a horse' is a boring sentence. 'A man in a red coat riding down a green grassy lane on a grey horse' is a beautiful sentence." It's easy really. Oh, and lots of sex too, and animals, that's it really, all you need.

We visit another novelist – Deborah Lawrenson – in her house in Provence, before the panel discuss her book, The Lantern, about two different women in two different times in a house in Provence. Ade likes it, says it has a good sense of place and he enjoys the smells in it; Rory thinks it has too many adjectives; Jo is irritated by one of the characters who she describes as a "a nana". And a man in a book group in Winkwell in Hertfordshire says it made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.

Of course they do that – go to the book group – because it's in the spirit of these times, when everyone's interested in what everyone's got to say. I'm clearly living in the past though, because I'm not that fussed about what the Winkwell book group thinks; I still want to know what some kind of book expert thinks – a writer even.

Arjun Rampal
With Aishwarya Rai Bachchan being pregnant, guess who got a windfall vacation.

Arjun Rampal. The model-turned-actor is acting with Ash in Heroine but since the film is still a question mark for the time being, the National Award winning-actor has been sitting at home.

Says a source, ``Like most of the industry the news of Ash impending motherhood caught Arjun unawares.

He had allotted certain dates for Heroine and now thosedates may not be utilised.''

Arjun who is very close to both Abhishek Bachchan and Ash(having even worked with Ash in a film written by her mother Brinda Rai) is very happy that the younger Bachchan couple will soon have an addition to their family.

But of course he himself is also due for a short vacation till such time as he knows what the status of Heroine is.

Aamir Khan's WC lucky charm for Delhi Belly

Aamir-Khana.jpg
Delhi Belly, produced by Aamir Khan Productions, is ready to hit screens on July 1, 2011 and Aamir Khan has plans set to ensure that the film is a super success.

Though Aamir is not a superstitious guy, he does believe that one of his Blue t-shirt is very lucky for him. The Khan wore it to the Wankhede Stadium during the 2011 Cricket World Cup finals, when Team India registered a historical victory. And the perfectionist plans to pull that lucky charm out of his wardrobe once again - this time, for the success of Delhi Belly.

Talking about his plans, Aamir says, "My Blue t-shirt is very lucky for me. I wore it during the World Cup finals and I will now wear it on July 1 when Delhi Belly hits screens."

Without a doubt, Aamir is doing everything possible to make sure that his home production starring bhanja Imran Khan is a super success. Now, only the box office numbers will reveal if Aamir has succeeded in his efforts.

Anita's in love again

Anita Hassanandani has found love again. Her new man isn't from the industry. His name is Rohit and the two met through common friends.

A source close to Anita says, "She's in a happy place, and all her close friends have met her guy. They've been going around for a couple of months. But things have got pretty serious in the last few weeks. The two have been spotted having coffee and dinners. Even though she's in a relationship, this time she wants to do it differently."

The actress has been a private person and even while she was in a relationship with Eijaz Khan, she never publicly admitted to the affair.

The source adds that Anita has learnt from her mistakes and has decided not to let public speculation get the better of her. "Her breakup with Eijaz was one of her life's lowest points. But she still managed to put a brave face and immerse herself into work. She's in the best shape, taking care of herself and making sure that she doesn't make someone else the reason for her happiness."

An engagement on the cards? "Not at the moment. But they definitely plan to put a name to their relationship soon."

Claudia Ciesla, a Ganesha avatar?

When things don't go the way you want them to, you need divine intervention. And this is what seems to have happened to German model Claudia Ciesla, one of the participants of "Bigg Boss 3", who started out with Bengali film "10.10".

In a curious case that has emerged, the sex siren known for her unmatched twin assets, has been helmed as the reincarnation of Lord Ganesha, by none other than her spiritual guru, Ramesh. The news has been flashed recently on the online edition of the leading tabloid in Germany, Bild.

The opening paragraph of the article when translated in English, goes like this: That Bild girl Claudia Ciesla (22) is very special, we have long known. Does she still managed the first German in Bollywood to become a movie star. The Indians are crazy about her. Now, says a guru, why: the sexy Münchnerin had a rebirth and the resurrection of the Hindu deity Ganesh (sic). Incidentally, Claudia had once agreed to go topless for the same newspaper.

"Claudia has a strong spiritual connection to Ganesh. This is evident not only in her career, but also in her great social commitment and generosity," Ramesh Guru told Bild. In fact, the astrologer even calculated that by end-2011, Claudia is going to be an international superstar.

I'm sure she will be the next princess in Bollywood and also in Hollywood," said Ramesh Guru. In the same article, Claudia too was quoted as saying, "So far everything was right, what did he tell from my past and my previous life." (sic) When CT got in touch with Claudia, who's currently concentrating on a career in Bollywood, refused to have spoken to the newspaper. "I've not given an interview to Bild in recent times.

I don't know why such a thing has been written. I will call up my folks in Germany and ask them to look into the matter." On being asked whether Ramesh Guru ever told her about being the reincarnation of Lord Ganesha, she said, "I'm in touch with Ramesh Guru on Facebook. He did tell me that in my previous birth I was an Indian. I was very happy to know that. But this statement, from whichever quarter it has come from, cannot be tolerated. To call me or anyone else the reincarnation of Lord Ganesha would mean disrespecting the deity."
Claudia, who visits a temple every week, also has a Ganesha idol at home. "Be it a mosque, temple or
gurdwara, I frequent them often. I do puja everyday. I wonder why I'm being dragged into this," she signed off.By God, this is unmatchable!

Double Dhamaal | Movie Review

Story : The gang of Dhamaal -- Adi (Arshad Warsi), Manav (Jaaved Jafri), Boman (Ashish Chowdhury), Roy (Riteish Deshmukh) are back. Once again they have just one purpose in life: to get rich, any which way. This time the plan entails duping their tormentor Kabir (Sanjay Dutt) by messing up his personal and professional life.

Movie Review: First things first, part one was better. It was stupid, but it did have lots of goofy humour and fun. The sequel is more stupid than funny, nevertheless there are enough moments to keep the clock ticking.

The entire film operates as one extended con game where most of the chaos is kicked up by the loser foursome of Arshad, Jaaved, Riteish and Ashish. It's one of the most dysfunctional bunch of friends in Bollywood, where each seems to be more stupid than the other. Yet, when they pool in their mental deficiencies, they do manage to create some madcap moments on screen.

In the first half, they try to ingratiate themselves with Sanjay Dutt in order to win a partnership in his firm. And the fact the he has a svelte girlfriend like Mallika Sherawat and a siren sister like Kangana Ranaut motivates them further. But when they realize the tycoon has put them in a soup by peddling gutter water in the middle of Mumbai as oil, they know it's time for revenge. Specially since they are being hounded by the local gangster (Satish Kaushik) who is baying for their blood. Act two is all about vengeance and one upmanship between the foursome and Sanjay Dutt.

This one's definitely not for the fastidious, choosy viewer but for those who don't mind losing it for a bit, Double Dhamaal works like an average Bollywood comedy. Performance-wise, it's one big circus with the guys hogging most of the limelight. The girls -- Mallika and Kangana -- are mere confetti.
