The King's Speech | Movie Review

Story: When Prince Albert (Colin Firth) was called upon to lead the British Empire which comprised almost a quarter of the world in the 1930s, he was unsure whether he could be able to play his role as King George VI. This was primarily due to his awkward stammer which prevented him from delivering the public speeches which were required of him in the changing world order.

Movie Review: The King's Speech deserves all the accolades it won at the Oscars. First, because it is a highly motivational tale of failure and achievement and the singular ability of man to overcome all his limitations with courage and grit. The journey of Prince Albert from a low-on-confidence, self-censorious and stammering B-B-Bertie to King George VI, a leader of the largest nation, is essentially a universal story of struggle and success. It holds many an aspirational lesson for any and everybody who wants to bridge the gap between Being and Nothingness. The King's relentless efforts to conquer his disability and his therapist's consistent motivation are the stuff great endeavours are made of.

But more than the message and the moral of this period fable, it is the performances that make it such an enthralling watch. Colin Firth's rendition of the King who was called upon to script history -- he declared war against Hitler -- is truly monumental. Firth's monarch may have greatness thrust upon him, but he is terribly human: full of frailties, insufficiencies and doubts. England believes I can speak for it, but I have no speech, he poignantly declares, desperately trying to master his stammer. More importantly, he flits between arrogance, rage, insecurity and sensitivity with great finesse and emerges as a warm husband, father, friend and leader. And yes, the all Brit monarch does use the F-word too. As therapy!

Standing up to him is Geoffrey Rush as the failed Australian actor who tries to use his talent as a speech therapist, even as he hopes for a comeback on stage. Geoffrey's Lionel is absolutely endearing, both as a brusque, no-nonsense `doctor' who believes in a democratic relationship with his patients (so what if they are royalty) and as a reliable friend who is for keeps. And between them, the two actors create some magical moments on screen as they share their highs and lows. Equally enticing is Helena Bonham Carter's delineation of the loving wife who stands by her husband, come what may.

The King's Speech may be a historical film, but for cine-buffs hungry for refined cinema, this one may go down as celluloid history: an uplifting document on the human spirit.

Gul Panag is getting hitched?

After actresses Shilpa Shetty and Lara Dutta, it's now the gorgeous Gul Panag's turn to get hooked and booked.

Going by the rumours, Gul is planning to tie the knot with her Pilot beau she has been seeing for sometime now.

The actress, who was at one point seeing Sikander Kher, has been very active on social networking websites. Along with doing films every now and then, she has been busy supporting a plethora of causes.

While Gul wasn't available to confirm the developments, congratulation messages have been started coming in from friends on her micro-blog, which only authenticate that wedding bells are going to ring soon.

Abhinav to direct an action thriller

Finally all the rumours and speculations over what Abhinav Kashyap will do after opting out of Dabangg 2 can come to a rest.

Kashyap, who directed the biggest hit in Dabangg last year has now turned a producer and will be making a hard-core action thriller for Viacom 18.

The production company will co-produce the film, along with Kashyap, and if rumours are to be believed then talks are on with none other than King Khan SRK.

A couple of days back, Kashyap has said that he had not signed the film with Viacom 18. This development has reportedly happened in the last 48 hours. Our source said, "It was Kashyap's friend Sunil Bohra who intervened and made things possible for Kashyap.
Bohra has been a close associated with the Studio 18 and has been involved in a couple of films with them. After Kashyap left Dabangg 2, he immediately a film with Viacom 18. He has already met SRK and expressed his desire to work with him.

SRK too told him that he would love to work with him on an action thriller that he has in mind. Kashyap has channelled all his energies into getting the script right and it will be ready by May.

Meanwhile Kashyap will be a partner on the film and will not be charging anything as director's fees. He will instead share the profits as well as the negative rights along with the production house."

In spite of repeated calls, Abhinav Kashyap and Vikram Malhotra of Viacom 18 remained unavailable for comments.

Katrina lashes out at the kiss controversy

Katrina Kaif is awfully busy these days. Amidst a flurry of activity that includes the pre-production work for her home production to launch sister Isabelle, and shooting for films,Kat is caught up rehearsing for her performance tomorrow at the Indian Music Award.

"Yesterday we were told that our performances were called off, and in the morning it's informed that the show is on tomorrow. I am out of my wits, juggling hundred things together," says Kat, this year's hottest item girl, who is set to perform an act inspired by Moulin Rogue tomorrow at the IMA night.

Given the tight situation, there couldn't have been any room for any other discussion today. But Kat surprised us with her forthright clarifications regarding the return of the lip-locking scene with Gulshan Grover for Kaizaad Gustaad's Boom, which is now packed in a new DVD to be launched by the makers of the film soon.

Mind you, Katrina doesn't feel haunted by any kind of her past ghost. "What's there to react in the first place? And what's new about those scenes?" asks an unfazed Katrina. "I don't deny I have done the scenes in the past where I did things that I wasn't comfortable. And in any case, `Boom' and the kissing scenes are all over the internet", states the hottest downloaded Bollywood babe on the net.

The film had some hot lip locking scenes between Gulshan Grover and Katrina, who was a newbie that time. Apparently the hot scenes were removed from the film, when her than beau Salman Khan put pressure on the makers of the film. Does she attribute this sudden but unpleasant development to any specific reason at this point in her career and life? Is someone trying to make some quick buck out of her success or is there a purposeful strategy to malign her?

"Honestly I wouldn't know. I have never interpreted people's intentions. As it is the makers have issued a statement today to the media. And they have denied doing anything like this," clarifies Katrina.

Whatever is the outcome, the fact is success cannot be measured or maligned. And Katrina is a wonderful example of phenomenal success.

Dino, Nandita to tie the knot!

A friend of the actor says they could say, "I do" as soon as next month, or six months later, but it's definitely happening.

For the last few months there have been rumours that wedding bells will ring for Dino Morea and Nandita Mahtani. The actor and the designer have been in a relationship for close to two years, but speculation of their marriage has been gaining momentum recently, after his ex-girlfriend Lara Dutta tied the know last month.

Close friends of the couple have informed TOI that both Dino and Nandita want to get married, and they know it will happen, but they don't feel the pressure to rush into it. Says a source close to Dino, "It can happen next month or it can happen in a few months time, but what is certain is that Dino and Nandita will be man and wife soon. They are both good together, and they realise that. They have spent a lot of time together and have been there for each other in good times and bad. That is the test. Now the question is not 'if' they will get married. It is just 'when' they will get married.

The source adds, "Dino and Nandi are mentally prepared to give marriage a shot. Both have had an equal share of failed relationships before they found each other but they have left all that behind. Both are grounded individuals in love and they are looking at something that lasts forever. Any day, a big announcement could happen."

Mahi Gill mixes exercise with yoga

Mahie Gill who swears by her fitness regime which is a mix of exercise and yoga

My exercise regime
I workout almost everyday and do a mixture of cardio and yoga for one to one and a half hours. I jog on the treadmill for a minimum of 30 minutes. After that, I do yoga for at least half an hour that includes breathing exercise Pranayama, Surya Namaskar and various asanas. A practice that I diligently follow is that I always climb stairs rather than using an elevator.

My problem areas
I have a tendency to put on some flab on my stomach, thigh and arms.
I always make it a point to jog as it is helpful for my thighs and also for the arms.
For my tummy, I do stomach crunches.

My strengths
Despite my stomach, thighs and arms being my problem areas, if I religiously workout for six days a week, then I do not need to worry.
My dedication to exercise takes care of it all.

My diet
I have a mix of apple, beetroot, carrot and amla juice daily. I generally have it early in the morning. Another must-have for me is green tea. I have a cup of green tea after every meal. So I have two to three cups. As for food, I do not eat oily or spicy food. My food contains salt for seasoning and turmeric for spice. Also, I avoid red meat and mostly consume a vegetarian diet. I drink lots of water everyday and do not eat after seven in the evenings.

My Idols
Ideal celeb body (male): Hrithik Roshan and Milind Soman
I think Milind Soman has a good athletic body and Hrithik, as we all know, has a fabulous body.

Ideal celeb body (female): Shilpa Shetty
She has had a well-toned body for as long as I can remember.

John Abraham seriously injured

John Abraham is the macho guy of Bollywood. With a sturdy and well worked out body, he can surely be the best pick for a super hero film.

But even he is not infallible. A couple of days ago, the actor had a bad fall while shooting for a stunt scene for Vipul Shah's production, Force.

The stunt required him to jump from one moving goods train to another. Instead of landing on his feet he lost his balance and fell on his back over a heap of stones.

The actor was severely injured and suffered as many as 40 injury marks on his back. Despite being given an immediate medical attention, John was visibly in discomfort. But the actor braved and finished the shot he was required to.

In December last year too, again while he was shooting for Force, John had a ligament tear and was in excruciating pain.

A source who was present on the sets while John met with the accident, says, "John seems to be getting injured time and again.

Earlier he was injured at Filmcity and now at the Jogeshwari yard. He had a bad fall and his entire back was injured badly and there were injury marks."

Producer Vipul Shah said, "We were shooting a scene with two moving goods trains. John had to jump from one to another.

Although all the precautions were taken, this is something that can never be controlled. He was supposed to land on his feet but he fell on his back, the compartment of the goods train was full of stones which hurt him badly.

The impact with which he fell down was huge and that's why he got hurt badly. Both, my director Nishikant Kamath and I were extremely scared. We were scared that he might have severely injured his spinal chord.

When we saw his back, he had as many as 40 injury marks and scratches all over. We somehow finished the shot as it was the last day of this schedule. He is now taking rest."

Now that the schedule is over and John can rest and get back in shape. We wish you a speedy recovery, John.

I'm not a B or C grade actress: Preity

Preity Zinta, 36, talks about her television debut and having survived a difficult personal phase

What convinced you to accept the offer to host Guinness World Record Ab India Todega?
(laughs) It is a record breaking show. I have been getting TV offers for the past five-six years. I didn't have time. Nothing grabbed my attention then.

Talk shows are too personal because so much about your own life emerges through them. I am an adventurous person and when I heard about this show, I had to give it a shot.

All your friends from the industry (Shah Rukh, Salman, Abhishek, Amitabh) have hosted TV shows. Did you ask them for tips?
They told me to relax and be myself. Whoever met me said do what you want.

When will you return to the big screen?
You will see me in movies this year.

Why have you turned down scripts in the past few years?
I was busy over the past six months with the court cases and the fights with BCCI. Before the IPL, I can shoot for the show. IPL follows, and then I will take a month off before shooting for my film.

You made a successful transition from acting to entrepreneurship.
Earlier, I never had the courage to try something completely different. Once I was at the top of my game and opportunity came, I said, 'I want to try this.' I could have done it a bit differently by doing one film a year at least. But I got so consumed by various things that I did not have time for anything else.

Are you in touch with people from the industry?
Of course. I always meet filmmakers who call me for script narrations and politely say, 'Not right now, later'. I listen to every script and that's why they have always been nice to me. You can never forget where you have come from and the people who have helped you get there.

Have you refused any exciting projects?
I have said no to most of the major releases that have done extremely well. It is not in my personality to say I was offered this and that.

Any regrets?
None. In the past 10 years, I have done big films, given big hits. I was never a B grade or C grade actress. I started with Dil Se. I am the only actress in my generation to have worked with Yash Chopra. I have been very lucky. I have never seen crazy failures in films. I did see a difficult side of life personally and it has made me tougher, stronger and smarter. I hope.

When your IPL team Kings XI Punjab came under the scanner, how did you deal with the allegations?
There were allegations against all the teams. We emerged clean, and had the court to back us. After all these investigations and after people pointing fingers at us, we went to court and won fair and square. I would have died of a heart attack if I had been accused of something that I have never done in my life.

Did you discuss issues with your business partner Ness Wadia?
I was in discussion with all my partners and there is no one in particular that I turned to.

What's your involvement with the Kamal Amrohi property case?
I am not anybody's legal heir, nor am I inheriting anything from anybody. I have a lot of respect for him and he is a gentleman. He was in a lot of trouble and I helped him. He asked me to help him. But people blew up the story. The only inheritance I will ever get is from my father.

But he publicly said he wants to give you his property.
Well, yeah! But I haven't taken anything from him.

Are you in touch with Ness?
Why is he so important to everybody? It was over between us two years ago and you should let it be.

Is there a new man in your life?
No, not right now.

Have you turned celibate?
(Laughs) No, I am normal. If I meet someone, I am happy to have a chat. But I am not seeing anyone in particular right now.

Would you want to marry soon?
Of course! I am like anybody else.

Nargis or Kat for Ranbir?

Ranbir Kapoor and his co-star Nargis Fakhri were watching a screening of Black Swan when we spotted them outside the theatre after the film.

First, we caught Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif dining at a suburban five star hotel. Now we have spotted him with his new-found friend and Rockstar co-star Nargis Fakhri.

Ranbir might be discreet about his public outings with 'good friend' Katrina but it seems he has no qualms in going public with Nargis.

On Monday night Ranbir went out to watch Oscar winning film Black Swan at a Juhu multiplex with Nargis. He was also accompanied by buddy Ayan Mukerji.

The two, it seems, were having a cosy evening and a good time watching the film.

But after the film, as soon as they learnt about shutterbugs waiting outside the theatre, they immediately dispersed.

There have been reports about the growing proximity between Ranbir and Nargis ever since they started shooting for Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar.

A source said, "Ranbir is known to charm girls and it is not surprising that he has charmed his Anglo Indian co-star, Nargis too.

Although he is very close to Katrina Kaif that doesn't stop the Kapoor boy from making new friends and socialising with them."

Katrina-Gulshan kiss is back!

Her steamy kiss with Gulshan Grover in the DVD of her debut film that was deleted, will now appear in the new one

Katrina Kaif's hot liplock with Gulshan Grover in Boom (2003) is all set to return to haunt her. The actress had managed to get the screen smooch deleted from the first DVD by putting pressure through Salman Khan, who she was dating then. No one says no to Khan. But now that he's out of her life, the kiss is making a comeback.

The question that begs to be asked is why the makers want to release a fresh DVD when it's not exactly a hot selling item. Says an industry source, 'It is clear that the makers of Boom want to cash in on Katrina's success. She is a top actress now and naturally there will be curiosity about a steamy scene she did, when she was a newcomer." It's just another way to make a quick buck at her expense.

Gulshan confirms, "It is true. The new lot will have the controversial scene, which was omitted earlier. Many years have passed since we did Boom and even I had forgotten that such a scene existed in it. But we are all set to refresh the past. The scene certainly will have its share of reactions."

Meanwhile, the actress is clueless about this new development. However, a source from the production says, "They don't need to inform her or get her permission for the same. She had signed a contract knowing fully well what she was doing and had got paid for it." Fact remains that Kat has time and again admitted that she regrets doing the bold scenes at the start of her career.

Boom on big screen too
Sanjay Jumani, the international distributor of the film, reveals, "It is true that the deleted scenes will be included in the new print. We are also going to re-release the film in UK, USA and Gulf. We feel the film had not got its due when it released. It was ahead of its time."
