Karz Movie Review
Director: Satish Kaushik
Producer: Krishan Kumar, Bhushan Kumar
Music: Himesh Reshammiya
The Movie: Within a span of 12 months, two directors have tried to 'reincarnate' KARZ. First, it was Farah Khan with OM SHANTI OM last Diwali, and now Satish Kaushik with a few more Zs to the name KARZZZZ. While trade reports have labeled OSO a 'Super Hit', KARZZZ will not be far behind as I'm sure it will rake in the moolah within the first week itself and in the overseas market, it will come back with a huge roar!
I'm talking purely in terms of the monetary benefits for the makers because film-making is a business and at the end of the day it is the balance sheet that counts and T-Series have made a wise investment in remaking this Subhash Ghai Classic. With a tight script in place, there was absolutely no room for a flop show here, save for the gamble they took with Himesh Reshamiya to play Monty, a role immortalised by the legendary Rishi Kapoor. I will come to Himesh later.
If the audience took to OSO, I see no reason why KARZZZZ will not make it big. For one, it has good production values; the cinematography, lighting, sound, choreography, sets are extremely appealing not to forget the Himesh touch to the music. And if you are willing to suspend common sense, you can actually sit through this movie. It's not a torture after all, like some recent films that have made their way to the theatres, boasting of huge star cast and big banners.
The movie begins well and keeps you glued to the screen even though you know what will happen. Full marks to Satish Kaushik here. But it is only towards the interval and beyond that the loose ends begin to show. Foremost among them being Urmila Matondkar, who plays Princess Kamini who has killed Ravi Varma. Twenty-five years later, when Ravi Varma is reborn as Monty, Kamini has not aged a single day. In fact she looks as old, if not younger than Himesh! May be she got her hands on the magic potion that Riz Raizada was trying to seize from DRONA a few weeks ago!

'Karzzz' premieres at Abu Dhabi Fest
Karzzz", starring singer Himesh Reshammiya as the lead actor, narrates the tale of a rock star's revenge with Cape Town as its backdrop. The movie also stars Urmila Matondkar, debutante Shweta Kumar, Gulshan Grover, Raj Babbar and Danny Denzongpa.
"It is a privilege to have 'Karzzz' selected as the only Hindi film to be premiered at the Abu Dhabi Film festival," said producer Bhushan Kumar after the screening on October 16.
Toronto-born Richie Mehta's 'Amal,' an unabashedly lovely film about a poor auto rickshaw driver from New Delhi, was screened twice at the festival.
'Amal' presents the daily life in New Delhi and shows the rewards for human compassion. Replete with characters including a dying street urchin, an eccentric millionaire, a good-hearted auto-rickshawwallah and a lovelorn shopkeeper, it has something to offer for everyone.
With Naseeruddin Shah, Roshan Seth, Seema Biswas and Koel Purie as the cast, the film has won over 15 international awards, and has been named as one of the Canada's Top Ten films by the Toronto International Film Festival.
Another movie with an Indian connection Sir Richard Attenborough's magnum opus 'Gandhi' was screened in the "Special Presentation" section of the festival. The film, dubbed into Arabic, had its first local premiere at an international film festival.
As the principle organiser of MEIFF 2008, one of our intrinsic values is the celebration of culture," said Mohamed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Vice Chairman of MEIFF.
Mallika Sherawat to shut up and let her body do the talking
In the film Mallika will play the character of a snake, and all her scenes will see her expressing emotions and feelings through body language. Confirming this, director Jennifer Lynch says, “Mallika is a snake so how is she expected to talk? She doesn’t know the human language. The world of words and sentences is unknown to her. As a snake, she has other senses with which she communicates. Even when she transforms from her snake from to the human one, she doesn’t speak. Mallika kind of freaked out when she was told that she had no lines. As an actress, she is used to convey her emotions and expressions through dialogues.”
Irrfan Khan and Divya Dutta are playing supporting roles in the film which is expected be released mid-2009.
Salman and Katrina in Subhash Ghai's next movies
Subhash Ghai confirmed the details. "Yes, Salman and I have spoken about doing one more film together after Yuvraaj. It is a complete entertainer that talks about today's youth. We will start the film only towards the end of next year (2009) since Salman's dates also need to be available and even I need time to work on the script. As for Katrina, she has been signed by Mukta Arts for 3 films, so she will also be a part of this project in all probability."
Only recently, we had informed you of Ghai's plans to start a film with Dilip Kumar in a pivotal role. So is this the same film? "No no…the film I am planning with Dilip Saab is different film altogether. It's a light hearted entertainer which will appeal even to the youngsters. Dilipji would be playing a pivotal role of an 85 year old man in the film. This film (starring Dilip Kumar) will start first after I am done with Yuvraaj and I plan to wrap it in around 4 months," signed off the Showman of Bollywood.
Pooja bedi is not making film based on her mother
Pooja, daughter of Kabir Bedi and his first wife Protima, said she has neither been approached by any director or producer for permission nor for providing any information on her mother.
"Neither I or any of my family members know about the film," Pooja told IANS.
"I wonder how they will make a film on my mother without getting any details from us. I hope they are not making the film with reference from her autobiography," said Pooja.
Protima Bedi, Odissi danseuse-cum-model, had written a autobiography titled "Time Pass" where she gave a candid description of all her relationships and her rebellious lifestyle.
The book also has a vivid description of her family life including her dream project of setting up a free dance school Nrityagram, to her eventual transition into a monk.
Pooja had compiled all her writings and published the book in 2000.
Pooja said: "If they are making the film from her book then they should first seek permission."
Earlier, it was reported in a section of media that south Indian director Sarath Kumar is making a film on Protima Bedi where Shilpa Shetty will be playing the role of Protima.
